BLUE BEETLE Animated Series In The Works At DC Studios; Will Serve As A Follow-Up To 2023 Movie

Another DC Studios TV series is officially in the works and this one is animated! Yes, we're getting a Blue Beetle follow-up, but what does this mean for Jaime Reyes actor Xolo Maridueña? Find out here!

Deadline reveals that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are plotting a new Blue Beetle animated TV series. It's reportedly already in development, with Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) said to have started work on the project earlier this year.

He'll serve as showrunner, while Cristian Martinez (Women of the Movement) is writing the series. Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, director and screenwriter of the 2023 movie, respectively, are going to executive produce alongside John Ricard.

Galen Vaisman, who was also an executive producer on Blue Beetle, is overseeing the series for DC Studios.

James Gunn has already confirmed there are plans for Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes in the new DCU and this sequel "could potentially lead to a return to the big screen," says the trade's sources.

It's unclear whether that would be in another solo outing as the Blue Beetle movie made only $130.8 million worldwide on a reported $104 million - $125 million budget. In a tough year for the DCEU, it performed better than expected and has a solid 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The trade goes on to explain that "the animated series will build on the movie, developed under DC Studios’ previous regime, but will divert from telling the same story. Instead, the show will create its own story." We don't know exactly what that means, though this may serve as a reboot which abandons the hunt for the missing Ted Kord to make him an established part of the DCU.

In terms of cast, multiple Blue Beetle actors have been approached and are said to be keen on returning.

"I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever," Maridueña said earlier this year. "It’s been really great to work alongside James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran], who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with."

"It’s an honor. Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon."

We'd imagine this animated series is what the actor was referring to and it feels like a smart way to incorporate the popular hero into the DCU. Providing the show is a critical hit and attracts plenty of viewers on Max, DC Studios is no doubt hoping it will result in a renewed interest to see Jaime back on the big screen in live-action.

The Blue Beetle movie I liked the costume and some of the action scenes but the rest of the movie was shit his family was annoying.

@marvel72 - Yeah it was so odd to me that people said they were well done. Xolo was good as the lead, the costume was cool, and where was some ok action. But it was just a mid movie and the family was really annoying.

Budget: $104M
Box Office: $130M
$178M loss

I'm glad they're not letting Jamie go but the movie certainly should be added to the deceased DCEU as a part of that and be laid to rest.

@Blergh - That is NOT how math works, can never loose more money than the total you spend.

104 budget makes for a 250 break even, so it did loose money but if it didn't sell a single ticket you still couldn't have lost more than that 104 (plus maybe another 50 for advertising etc).

Loss is total spend minus how much you get back from ticket sales thus lets say TOTAL cost with advertising etc is 150, get half the BO, thus loss is around $60M...

...however then effectively having a TV movie which cost you only $60M is likely considered worth it as I am under the impression it was initialy only intended to be made for streaming only and I'd say the film deserved to make way more than it did.

@Apophis71 - Anything less than the break even point is a loss. If it's 250 break even and 130 BO then they lost 120.

250 - 130 = 120.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 6:42 AM
@ObserverIO - No, that STILL isn't how it works

If you spend 150 and only get 90 back from ticket sales (half the box office) you have lost 60... the reason break even is 250 is cos half that goes to the theatre, everyone forgets to divide by two when doing these calcs... so yes, they fell short of break even by 120, but that means a 60 loss cos 120/2
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 6/15/2024, 7:46 AM
@Apophis71 - The budget of the film isn't the only money that the studio spends, there's marketing costs, distribution etc. The theatres do take a cut, but everything is factored into the break even point. That's what the break even point is, it's how much the movie needs to make before it starts making a profit.

So anything less than that is a loss, surely.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 8:25 AM
@ObserverIO - Yes, I know all of that but your forgetting to divide by two, the 250 is due to the studio only getting half the box office AND factoring the additional costs...

Budget around 100 will means around 50 marketing etc, that is how much out of pocket, 150ish

They get about half the ticket sales thus the income the rest going to theatres.

If costs minus income is 150 minus 90 it makes a 60 loss roughly even if 120 short of break even (which does include an error I realised which I will get to)

NOW, if you then want to start factoring taxes and all of that sort of thing it changes the numbers again if we realy wanted to get into the weeds and a loss results in the ability to have tax right offs but we are talking rough math not into the weeds.

Tho I did notice after your 2nd respone I made a mistake too, half asleep and all that and got two of the numbers mixed up due to the silly math the OP posted, lol, I was looking at the BO being the $178 thus making income around 90 when it was BO of 130 thus income of around 65 and thus loss of 150-65=85

The point remains almost everyone forgets to divide by two so yes 250-130 gives you how far short of break even point they were but need a divide by two in the math in order to get to how much they are out of pocket, ie losses, not just look at a straight forward rough estimate of break even point minus ticket sales.

However my main point, resulting in the half asleep error, is cos you can NEVER loose more money than you spend thus if only spending 100 plus advertising etc and an therefore an out of pocket of 150 you can't loose more than that and the OP had the losses at 178.

@Apophis71 - That's probably why people are always calling it a 'rule of thumb' equation, because it's actually more complicated that just a single number they have to reach.

So basically there's a much lower break even point (how much they spent) and then the BO that you take off of that number is the BO ÷ 2.
It's not as simple as Break even point-BO=
It's Lower break even point/money spent-(BO÷2)=

I got it, I think. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 6/15/2024, 9:20 AM
@ObserverIO - Yeh, the numbers are always based on a lot of guestimates too and leave out a lot such as all the tax breaks, other grants and financial incentives for filming in specific locations, product placement and adverts for sponsors, merch, licensing and however much you value the thing when it goes on streaming.

Marketing isn't always half the budget, sometimes more, sometimes less but the profit and loss you always need to have an accurate figure of total costs first and a full picture of all their income and use those two numbers to work it out which is clear as mud with the creative accounting Hollywood pulls off, lol.

I liked it, wasn't expecting something ground breaking because origin stories are lame. Oh well. Inside Out 2 will have an exclusive 100 day theatrical release window, how long do you think the parents can hold out? My prediction has come true! Get rid of the early digital release and you'll see people buy movie tickets, even the suits understand

And with Sony buying Alamo Drafthouse, it's safe to say theaters aren't going anywhere. Here's to another 100 years lol

I still need to see the movie but cool…

Given Gunn’s recent comments about characters crossing over from live action to animation or vice versa , I’m expecting Xolo and pretty much the rest of the cast to be back for this.

We might even get Ted Kord voiced by the same person that would play him in live action whether they decide to (somebody like a Jason Sudeikis or Bateman might do well in that role).

I hope they do continue the search for Ted Kord story since I do know that the film sets him as having been an established hero previously which could work in the DCU rather then him just inexplicably being back.

Making animated projects of smaller characters is definitely the way to go. He may not be the first character I'd make a series about, but I'd take that over dropping another $100 million on a live action movie.

@WhateverItTakes - What they're doing is they're keeping the character but leaving his movie behind, so although it'll be played by the same actor, the story itself will not be connected to the movie.
