Earlier this month, we learned that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are plotting a new Blue Beetle animated TV series. It's already in development, with Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) said to have started work on the project earlier this year.

He'll serve as showrunner, while Cristian Martinez (Women of the Movement) is writing the series. Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, director and screenwriter of the 2023 movie, respectively, are going to executive produce alongside John Ricard. Galen Vaisman, another Blue Beetle executive producer, is overseeing the series for DC Studios.

Jaime Reyes actor Xolo Maridueña is set to reprise his role alongside other actors who starred in the Blue Beetle movie. However, there are conflicting reports about whether it's a continuation of that or a soft reboot which can bring Jaime into the DCU without any DCEU baggage.

During a recent edition of his podcast, Maridueña broke his silence on the upcoming animated series, though seemed largely in the dark when it comes to the direction it's heading in.

"Wowza, Blue Beetle is back! I'm so excited," the actor enthused. "To get to do the...I think there is an opportunity on each platform to really make something shine, right? In the movie, you had the opportunity to do the movie stuff. In a TV show, you have the chance to do long-format stuff."

"In an animated show...the f***ing fact this kid likes anime and can make whatever freaking weapon he wants and has this suit that lights up...if they do the suit right in animated, I wonder if it's going to look exactly like the movie suit did or if it's going to, depending on what the art style, if it's going to look a little bit different [or the same] for branding and all that."

When Maridueña's co-host wondered whether Blue Beetle could lean into Jaime's love of anime with an animation style which pays homage to that genre, he replied, "I hope so...if this is a continuation."

Elsewhere in the podcast, Maridueña shared some of the TV shows and video games (including Final Fantasy) that he'd like to see inspire Blue Beetle's fighting style moving forward.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has already confirmed there are plans for Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes in the new DCU and this sequel "could potentially lead to a return to the big screen," according to previous reports.

It's unclear whether that would be in another solo outing as the Blue Beetle movie made only $130.8 million worldwide on a reported $104 million - $125 million budget. In a tough year for the DCEU, it performed better than expected and has a solid 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Speaking of Xolo and anime, can Netflix finally cast this guy as Ace, pretty please? Thank you.

@DrReedRichards - He's my choice too, but there's a South African actor named Arthur Falko that seems like he might be locked in as Ace. If he's not Ace, he could be someone else, but for the last 6 months he's teased some Ace stuff, has been working out with the Helmeppo actor, and this week (first week of filming) he's been in Cape Town.

@TheFinestSmack -

Not familiar with the guy or his work, but he certainly looks the part, so I guess we'll see.

@DrReedRichards - I'd never even heard of him before but he's apparently somewhat popular in South Africa. Maybe he'll end up being Chopper and we can still get Xolo as Ace lol

@TheFinestSmack -

Lol, Chopper as a metrosexual hunk was not on my list of thoughts for the day, but thanks? 😅

I feel, out of the 4 DC films released last year, Blue Beatles got screwed the most. That was a legit good movie and had awesome actors that really conveyed the importance of family.

I know technicaly speaking the film made a loss, but did it realy...

...by that I mean, as I understand it, the film was supposed to be for streaming only which would have meant ZERO box office returns but uprading to a big screen release meant they got around $65M back from the BO returns they wouldn't have otherwise.

Yes that does not cover the money spent BUT how much would it have cost if not upgraded cos if the additional costs for doing that was LESS than $65M then although it didn't turn a profit technicaly it could be viewed by the studio as net gain overall anyway as STILL have the streaming film AND more public awareness of it increasing the draw to download the film...

Anyway, all the silly math theorising aside we actualy realy enjoyed the film A LOT, all be it for free at home and viewed as a fun family TV movie it was solid (just don't feel it was realy at the level I'd pay to see on the big screen). As such I AM interested to see what they do with the IP moving forward, it didn't feel tied to the DCEU at all. I may have missed DCEU specific ties but if only references to other DC IP's that could just as easily be to the new DCU films coming up.

I am not blind to the issues some may have had with the film, it wasn't without flaws but tbh don't care, it was fun and wanna see a LOT more of this character...

@Apophis71 - Cool how when you say”we,” there are actually people you have in mind instead of just using the word.9

@RolandD - I specificaly meant my Wife and I with the we, just to be clear :D I am however a mildly dyslexic Geordie so my use of the English language can differ greatly and contain spelling and/or grammatical errors :)

@Apophis71 - I got that you were talking about more than just your opinion. It was meant to be reference to how Josh always says we when it is just him.

Cool , I still need to see the movie but I’m happy for him!!.

The benefit of long form means you can help flesh out the characters more and with animation , the limit (besides budget) is just your imagination so this could work out for the best in regards to the character (an anime influence due to Jamie being a fan of it could be fun too).

If it is a continuation of the movie , I hope they do follow up on the search for Ted Kord story since I do know that the film sets him up as missing and having been an established hero previously which could work in the DCU rather then him just inexplicably being back.
