BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Set To Remain At #1 This Weekend With $77 Million Haul

Captain America: Civil War looks set to have some serious staying power this weekend by remaining #1 at the North America box office, but how much longer will it be until it reaches $1 billion worldwide?

Captain America: Civil War is entering its second weekend in North America, and according to Variety, Marvel's first Phase 3 release looks set to bring in an impressive haul of $77 million. That's despite competition from Money Monster, the Jodie Foster helmed thriller which stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts, a movie which actually looks set to perform better than expected with $15 million.

That's obviously chump change compared to what Captain America: Civil War is looking at, and with an estimated $22 million today, it looks like the movie will have a drop of around 57%, a number which isn't too different to what happened to Avengers: Age of Ultron last year during its second weekend. Good word of mouth has obviously helped this one, but worked against Batman v Superman

Only a handful of releases have exceeded the $70 million mark in its second weekend, and with an expected worldwide haul of $800 million by the end of today, that $950 million prediction for Sunday looks likely, and $1 billion is now just a matter of days away, a huge victory for Marvel Studios.

Given that Disney considered Age of Ultron a "flop" even though it crossed $1 billion, I doubt they're thrilled about this. Greedy buggers.

@pestulio07 - it was not a flop. They released a list of the most valuable movies and it was on it.

@PantherKing - I partially misquoted, they called it a "failure". I agree, it wasn't a flop. Guess the executives have different standards than we do.

@pestulio07 - They very well might. I guess it rides on whether or not they consider this Cap 3 or Avengers 3. I think they should be happy they put out a solid film, and an entertaining one at that. It shows you can have serious and depressing tones in a CBM, but it doesn't have to bore or depress an audience.

And I am referring to the recent F4 movie, not BvS, just in case anyone was thinking otherwise. I just read that article about Fox still wanting to go ahead with a sequel to that fetid pile, and it has my knickers in a bunch.
