BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Soars Toward $1 Billion

After just three weeks since its release, Marvel Studios Captain America: Civil War is only a matter of days from crossing $1 billion worldwide at the box office; will it outgross The Avengers? Hit the jump to find out!

In only three weeks since its release, Captain America: Civil War became the highest grossing movie of 2016 after surpassing Disney's Zootopia on Tuesday with worldwide total of $981.9 million, and will soar past $1 billion on Friday. The Marvel threequel has amassed an impressive $671.4 million internationally at the box office so far, and after just two weeks since its domestic release, it stands as the fifth highest grossing movie of the year domestically with a total $310.5 million.

It's pretty much safe to say that Captain America: Civil War is going to surpass Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's $328 million and Deadpool's $365 million domestic total to become the highest grossing movie of 2016 domestically - but will it outgross The Avengers? Since it's performing pretty much in line with Avengers: Age of Ultron, that films  $459 domestic total isn't out of reach just yet, but the chances of it outgrossing The Avengers domestic total of $623 is slim to none at this point.

The question is though, will Captain America: Civil War reign surpreme at the box office for the rest of the year? I have a feeling Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story could dethrone it, but the film is showing strong legs so far, so you never know.

How many times have you seen Captain America: Civil War? And how many times do you plan on seeing it again before its theatrical run is through? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Fantastic Beasts and where to find them and Star Wars will beat it. I think Disney will be disappointed if Civil War doesn't reach Avengers Box Office.

@BaneandDawn - lol, no. This is a Captain America film first and foremost, anything over a billion is a success.

I love this film, but i don't expect it to make more money than Avengers.

@TheManWithoutFear - Oh without a doubt, Avengers reached 1 billion after 19 days and has been beating Civil Wars box office run by several millions each day. Civil War will most likely end up somewhere between Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron box office gross.

I do wonder if Fantastic Beast and Rogue One will beat Civil Wars box office run.

It'll probably end up making 1.1-1.2 billion. Which is incredibly good.

The Avengers was a better movie in my opinion. Besides, a bit of the novelty has worn off, when it comes to superheroes sharing the screen together, which was seen when Age of Ultron grossed less than it's predecessor.

Marvel was wise to change things up from "hero team-up" to a "hero vs hero" story.

They need to keep shaking things up like this, if they wanna stay on top with audiences. Otherwise, each installment will make less money until they end up like the X-Men movies with middling box-office performances that barely qualify as successful, and which are only possible because of big names like Jennifer Lawrence, who phone in their performances and are given ridiculously large roles that make no sense to the story.

The CAPTAIN AMERICA movies have been really good. I think The First Avenger is underrated. Right now I have Dark Knight Trilogy at 1A and Cap Trilogy at 1B. They are both that damn good.

@HerculesJones - Agreed! And caps final (?) movie is much better than the dark knight's. They both have a good start and ending. But both their second installments were the best
