How Robert Downey Jr. Got the IRON MAN Weapon He Always Wanted In CIVIL WAR

We all gasped as Tony Stark stopped a bullet from the Winter Soldier with his armoured hand in the Superbowl TV Spot for Captain America: Civil War. But just who came up with that well-timed invention? Read on for more!

We've seen a lot of amazing things during the promotional cycle for Captain America: Civil War, but one of the coolest elements came early on during Civil War's Superbowl TV Spot. A seemingly brainwashed Winter Soldier takes a deadly shot at Tony Stark that is miraculously stopped by an Iron Man gauntlet hidden in Tony's watch. As it turns out, this ingenious Stark invention came from the mind of Robert Downey, Jr. himself; Downey says that the gauntlet was actually his idea, and while the Russo Brothers apparently didn’t grab the idea at first, they eventually gave in. "Here’s why I love the Russos: that was not in the script. And I said, ‘What if I had this watch that kind of turned into a glove?’ They humored me for a couple of weeks, but I kept bringing it up. Eventually they had someone measure me for the hand-glove."

Don't worry, the device isn't actually called the "hand-glove"; it apparently doesn’t have a name. Despite the Russo Brothers not generating this idea themselves, it's certainly wonderful to know that they are open to some input from their cast. Given that Iron Man has had a briefcase suit, it's not so far fetched that he might keep a watch gauntlet on him as a protective measure, especially with someone like the Winter Soldier on the loose! It's interesting to think of how the scene was written prior to Downey's input; that look of shock on his face was certainly a highlight!

@heisei24 - Loved that! I noticed that there's a lot in the way of great viral marketing for Civil War. Even more than usual for a Marvel film.

Was a very smart choice. The Stark-Glove emphasises his nature as being both Tony Stark and Iron Man and having difficulty seperating the two, when even a watch he wears is prepaired with Iron Man armour if he needs it.

It also makes sense after he's been attacked in Iron Man 3 and basically left defenseless most of the time and the weapon itself feels like a natural progression from him having only a repulsor glove to use during when he is captured in Iron Man 3.

Add to that it enables them to essentially have more seens involving Tony Stark without having the full Iron Man suit and its practically perfect - and a nice path on the inneviteable 'Extremis' idea of him having a suit that sprouts from his skin or body.

RDJ knows more about his character than any other actor that's ever played a superhero. That thing is just perfect Stark.

My only problem is that, in reality, stopping a bullet right as it exits the chamber would result in a blast that would rip apart Tony's face. Also, Tony's bare hand which rests on the slide should have broken his hand and ripped the flesh right off. I'm so exited for this movie, and the shot is cool; however, it should have been handled a little differently.

@Benjamitesandwich - I'm sure there's some fictional science-techy, comic-booky reason for it. Lol

Iron Man in CW is THE MOST BADASS he's even been in this universe. He's the most compelling too. RDJ gives a wonderful performance. This guy is Oscar nominated for a reason.

The Russos make EVERY charcater feel important in this film. They all have a purpose

Great addition. Makes sense for stark to have something like that for everyday personal protection.

It's kind of cool that this watch-gauntlet thing also seems to be an evolution of a similar thing he built in Iron Man 3 - it's when he's in Tennessee and he saves that kid from Savin, he sort of flicks his wrist and produces a crudely built single-use repulsor weapon. This definitely seems to be like a more refined version of that.
