Captain America: Civil War is a very busy movie, but one character whose absence isn't addressed is Nick Fury. In fact, the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. is never even mentioned despite playing a pivotal role at the end of
Avengers: Age of Ultron by seemingly becoming part of the New Avengers Facility. However, in a recent interview with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the
LA Times managed to get some intel which explains why he wasn't included here.
"We called [Fury], but he let the line blink. Primarily it felt like one too many possible opinions," Markus explains.
"We didn't want him to take one side or the other, because that's not his place in the universe. And then we didn't want another, 'Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?' It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for. He's the guy who put it together. He's been the sort of parent figure to the Avengers. Let the parent go away, and see if the kids can handle this. See if the kids can be who they're supposed to be without that governing voice. Um... and they didn't do that good of a job."
Those are all things which need to be addressed somewhere down the line, and while Kevin Feige has already confirmed that we'll see Fury again before Avengers: Infinity War, the writers were quick to tease his role there too. Asked about him possibly helping Earth's Mightiest Heroes out in the battle against Thanos, McFeely said: "I would think...Don’t you assume you’ll see everybody in the 'Infinity Wars?'" Markus then added, "It’s probably all hands on deck." That it will be, but where do you think the eyepatch wearing badass will show up next? Captain Marvel? Spider-Man: Homecoming?
