Yes, everything you've heard is true; Marvel's brand new Spider-Man is indeed both amazing and spectacular! While both of the previous live-action Peter Parkers certainly had their good points, it feels like this is the version we've all been waiting years to see on the big screen, and Tom Holland steals the show in every scene he appears in as part of #TeamIronMan in Captain America: Civil War.
While Spidey is very much just a supporting character here, directors Joe and Anthony Russo still manage to lay the groundwork for the 2017 reboot and shed some light on how this Peter differs to others we've seen over the years. So, what you'll find here is a breakdown of all the biggest Spidey reveals from Captain America: Civil War, and I think you'll be pretty surprised by many of these!
Captain America: Civil War is released in the vast majority of international territories later this month before reaching North America on May 6th. With that in mind, I'm sure many of you are hoping to avoid any big plot reveals, and while I don't touch on every story beat and major twist here, I won't be offended if you decide against reading any further because MAJOR SPOILERS do indeed follow.
6. There's A Very Good Reason For Those Moving Eyes
Spider-Man's moving eyes have been surprisingly divisive, and while they're a great way to express emotion on the hero's masked face (something which they do to great effect in Captain America: Civil War), it turns out that there's a story reason for them too.
When Tony enquires about the goggles Peter has been wearing on his homemade costume, he explains that his senses have been "dialled up to eleven", and that he needs those in order to control the huge amount of sensory input he gets while he's out there fighting crime.
That appears to be a reference to his spider-sense, and while this movie never really makes it clear how that factors into Spidey's long list of abilities, it seems likely that the character's upcoming solo movie will delve into that in greater depth than previous versions.
5. He Lives In An Apartment Building With His (Hot) Aunt May
When it was first mentioned that Peter Parker lives in an apartment building in Queens, many of you correctly pointed out that the type of house the comic book version of the character shared with his Aunt May is now extremely expensive and not representitive of how a poor family like this would realistically be living.
Their apartment is pretty small (but relatively nice too), and let's face it, it makes sense for Peter to live somewhere he can jump out of the window and start swinging through the sky! As for his Aunt May, Marisa Tomei most definitely hasn't been made to look any less glamorous than her usual self, something Tony Stark seems to take great delight in pointing out. Still, she's not too much of a departure as this take on the character still makes wheat cakes!
4. He Created His Webbing AND Web-Shooters
Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man had organic webbing, and while Andrew Garfield built his own webshooters, the webbing was revealed to be some sort of experimental material he found in Oscorp rather than an impressive formula of his own design. Thankfully, this version of Peter Parker is responsible for creating both of those things, something which debunks rumours that it would be Iron Man who made the young hero's webshooters for him.
With the webbing now a chemical compound - something which becomes clear when Peter webs Tony's hand to the door and then looks for the solution to get rid of it - it's clear that Marvel are sticking to the source material, and while he has room for spare cartridges on that utility belt, it will be fun to sees if he ever runs like in the comics.
3. He's A YouTube Sensation
Wondering how Tony Stark knows about Spider-Man? Well, while we never learn how Iron Man discovers the youngster's secret identity, his antics have been all over the internet thanks to some viral videos of the poorly dressed hero in action.
Having only been Spider-Man for six months, this Peter isn't well known to the public, but has been doing his bit, saving people and stopping criminals in their tracks, all while wearing a costume not that different to the one Tobey Maguire's Peter donned as a wrestler way back in 2002.
It's also worth noting that we never see Peter sign the Sokovia Accords, so the government presumably isn't aware that he's Spider-Man. Of course, that begs the question of why Tony would be ok with taking an unregistered hero into battle with him...
2. He Blames Himself For Uncle Ben's Death
Captain America: Civil War obviously skips over Spider-Man origin story, but during a rather heartfelt chat with Tony Stark, Peter does allude to the fact that he's decided to suit up because it was his fault that his Uncle Ben (who is never named) died. This obviously follows both the comics and previous movies, and it's going to be interesting to see how much the upcoming solo movie ends up addressing this.
There's no mention of the "Great Power..." line here either, and while the hero mentions that he became Spider-Man six months ago, he also fails to mention the spider which bit him and gave him his amazing new abilities. While you can understand why this movie didn't delve into all of that, does the 2017 reboot? It's such a well known story by this point, probably not in all honesty!
1. He's A Star Wars Fan
Just to make you and the characters in the movie feel ancient, Peter refers to that as a "really old movie" during this sequence, something which dismays both Iron Man and War Machine! Marvel's Phase 2 paid homage to Star Wars by cutting off a character's hand or arm in every movie, so could this be the start of a new tradition? That remains to be seen, but known this Spidey loves Star Wars more than Coldplay is a real relief after The Amazing Spider-Man movies.
