Should Steve Rogers/Captain America wield Mjolnir in the Avengers movie?

One of the few to ever wield Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, the question becomes should Joss Whedon insert it in the movie or am I crazy to suggest it?

In Thor Volume 1 Issue 390, Steve Rogers who at the time was going by the Captain lifted, Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. With the upcoming Avengers movie in May I was thinking, what would everyone think to Cap wielding Mjolnir?

I'm sure there are going to be several opportunites with various members of the Avengers attempting to lift the hammer. Having the Hulk attempt to lift the hammer would be pretty funny, Hulk gets riled up about not being about to lift Mjolnir and then Thor comes along, picks it up and knocks the crap out of Hulk.

Back to the subject at hand, personally I would not be against it as long as it is something quick and nothing more than Cap giving Thor his hammer back during a battle not even realizing what he just did.

I like your idea of him picking it up and handing it to Thor in battle without realizing what he did.

it did give him a tough time though when he lifted it it seemed to take everything he had, hands shaking and whatnot

Cap HAS lifted Mjolnir more than once and always when Thor is in deep trouble. He HAS been proven worthy. Hell, he just got done weilding it in the last issue of Fear Itself. What's the debate all about? There is none. He is worthy.

I could see it, but only if he did it in the middle of a fight and threw it at someone in the heat of the moment without really realizing what he did.

I think that at some point Marvel is going to give us this moment, but probably not in the first Avengers movie. I can see it in maybe Avengers 2 or 3 to be used as a device to establish Cap's 'leadership' ability. Thor would thus ultimately fully support anyone who could lift his hammer.

Also, to the OP, Fear Itself #7 sees Cap lifting, fighting with, shooting lightning from, and throwing Mjolnir and having it return to him. So, Thor 390 was definitely not a fluke.

@ironknight I am a fan of this idea, but I don't think they should do it in the first Avenger's movie. But they should definitely do it at some point through out the franchise. Cap is definitely worthy, but I think the audience should get to know Cap AND Thor a bit better before we see this so that they can surely understand the significance

Yeah, i'd take those animated films with a huge grain of salt.
I'll go with the proper 616 comics continuity to base it off on.
As far as I'm concerned Hulk has never lifted the hammer. Cap has proven worthy and I would not be opposed to the scenario of him lifting it in the heat of battle, or just doing so with no knowledge of the significance.
But it really isn't necessary for this first go at an Avengers movie.
(although the visual and reactions from his team mates, esp. Thor and Stark would be too good to resist)

THORION76 - 11/2/2011, 3:36 PM
If they have the Hulk and Thor go at it in an epic 2 min. battle and then have the Hulk try to pick up the hammer and not be able to do it that would set up the epic end battle scene where all the heros are down and cap struggles to his feet all beat up and seperated from his shield. Then he see's the hammer and pick's it up and use's it to turn the battle the Avenger's way. A very cool effect I would like to see them do with this scene is have cap spinning the hammer and because he is not used to the power, have electricity and lightning flash's going off everywhere as if it was out of control. that would show that Thor is an elemental, and that you need to learn to wield the hammer.

superman had the shield and the hammer in the justice leage/ Avenger's crossover. THAT SECOND PIC IS HOW THEY SHOULD HAVE CAP SAY AVENGERS ASSEMBLE . that would eliminate the cheeze factor in it.
CapemA

The Hulk cannot and has not ever lifted Thor's hammer. Only the worthy are able to do so. The Thor movie actually paid homage to this several times. Especially at the end when Thor laid his hammer on Loki's chest and Loki was unable to move.

It's a bad idea. Cap fans will definitely like it, of course...but at the expense of Thor fans.

And about the "worthiness" aspect...meh. The enchantment goes..."whosoever, if he be worthy, shall POSSESS THE POWER OF THOR"...not "shall be able to lift the hammer". Superman has lifted the hammer, thrown it (and returned to him), complete with lightning effects, etc., but after the battle, he couldn't even budge it. In comics, other than Thor, Odin and Thor's relative in the direct line (grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, etc.), no one besides Beta Ray Bill (and in the future Dargo) has been able to possess the power of Thor while wielding Mjolnir. It's only Beta Ray Bill who is worthy, he is the only one who ever turned into another version of Thor.

ThOr you have a good point but concept of that happening in the movie would be badass

Thor is knocked out by Loki in final battle, and Cap picks up his hammer and DOMINATES Loki.

First of all, if Cap did lift Thor's hammer, it couldn't just be a quick little joke in passing kind of thing, it has to be something that holds gravity. Cap is not able to wield Thor's hammer any time he wants, Thor has even said that Mjolnir chooses who is worthy and at what time they are worthy to wield the hammer. Cap has attempted on more than one occasion to use the hammer, and has only succeeded (correct me if I am wrong) 2 times, once in Cap Vol 1 and just recently at the end of Fear Itself.

Naaa.... i don't think the "those who're worthy thing" is quite established to the general audience yet. i mean, sure, many tried to lift it OUT of the frozen ground, in Thor, and failed, but, they haven't shown anybody trying to lift the hammer when it's just lying on the ground with nothing holding it down.

so, they need to establish, or RE-establish that, in future movies (Thor solo flick, or an Avengers sequel).

THERE ARE MANY REASONS I DESPISE THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE... One of them is seeing the HULK lifting that bogus M'jolnirr when he is clearly unworthy. I want to see him try to lift it in THE AVENGERS movie. I want to see his muscles pop and his eyes bulge, I want to see him get angrier and stronger, and despite that I want to see him fail.

Do I want to see CAPTAIN AMERICA lift THOR's hammer when he is clearly worthy? NOT YET. That should be the be all end all moment of the 3rd AVENGERS movie. This is a trilogy remember? Before that we must see many try and fail, among them THANOS.

I like @Victory's proposal, as well as many others posting. But Cap should, at some point, be able to wield Mjolnir; Cap is definitely worthy.

@ Victory

I have the emtire run of the Ultimates and in the who;e run, they never had Hulk lift the hammer. The cartoon "Ultimate Avengers" VERY losely based off of the Ultimates Universe had Hulk lift it, but that never happened in Ultimates Comics.

I THINK THEY SHOULD EVEN WORRY ABOUT IT UNLESS ITS A PART WHERE HE HAS NO CHOICE ...MAYBE HULK THOR AND THE REST ARE BEATEN DOWN.....BUT TOO MUCH TIME TAKEN ABOUT THORS HAMMER AND IT WOULD DEMINISH THE FACT WE ARE WATCHING THE AVENGERS FOR THE TEAM ITSELF.....ITS NOT A BIG DEAl
