New Report Says THE MARVELS Had A Much Higher Budget Than What Was Recently Stated

Many MCU fans were shocked to learn that The Marvels had a very modest budget in comparison to more recent Marvel projects but a new report from Forbes says that initial claim was too good to be true.

Something about The Marvels having one of the smallest budgets ever for a Marvel Studios film just didn't pass the smell test.

Spending on projects across film and television was seemingly out of control during the Bob Chapek era of Disney, prompting the recently returned Bob Iger to publicly state that things would be different moving forward. Of course, by the time Iger made these comments, The Marvels had already wrapped filming.

So when Vanity Fair published a piece on the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), asserting that The Marvels had a budget of just $130 million, many Marvel fans had a hard time believing it.

And it turns out, those doubters were right as Forbes has dug into company filings and discovered that Marvel actually spent $270 million (over 2x what was initially reported by Vanity Fair) on The Marvels. After filming in the U.K. and factoring in a $55 million tax credit, that brought the actual budget down to $219.8 million.

Filming on The Marvels commenced on May 31, 2021, and wrapped on May 13, 2022. Reshoots commenced in August 2022 with some reports stating that the film was undergoing a massive overhaul (something similar was reported on Secret Invasion).

With the increased budget, it's now critical for The Marvels to repeat the box office success of Captain Marvel. What are the odds of that happening in this new, post-Covid box office landscape? Let us know in the comment section below.

After a series of release date changes, The Marvels is currently slated to hit theaters on November 10, 2023.

The Marvels will star Brie Larson (Short Term 12, Fast X) as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris (The Photograph, Candyman) as Monica Rambeau/Photon, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, Zawe Ashton (Not Safe For Work, Nocturnal Animals) as Dar-Benn.

Also appearing in supporting roles are Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials, The Bay), Park Seo-joon (Itaewon Class, Concrete Utopia), and Samuel L. Jackson (Secret Invasion).

Teaming up changes everything everyone.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.  When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels.'

Could have an indie budget for all I care. I just want a solid movie that makes me find Carol interesting outside of her badass powerset.

@ModHaterSLADE -
They should really have gone with the concept of death/legacy, have Carol losing her powers after the 'destruction' of the Tesseract that occurred in Endgame. Everything the Tesseract powered is now losing powers.

E.g. Carol losing her powers, conflict with Monica about the idea of potentially giving her mother cancer due to exposure to space because she wanted to support Carol, focus on the idea that Carol inspired a new generation using Kamala as an example

Works as a way to nerf Captain Marvel and focus more on the human impact of what Carol has done to inspire or what her impact has been on her friends. Have her prove herself as a person and win through her out-of-the-box thinking or something as opposed to her powers. Potentially she makes the 'ultimate sacrifice'.

I have a feeling this movie will be better than a lot of people expect. I hope anyways. Marvel Studios has been pretty hit and miss since End Game.

The $130 Million is the amount spent in the first 2 months IN GREAT BRITIAN. This is info that was publicly available because of the British tax credits. News on other spending, until possibly now, has been sparse and not very relaible.

@TheLobster - It will be because Disney will say it has or they'll buy empty seats.

Imagine having to make 547 million dollars to break even on an after school special LMAO

@bobevanz -
$274m before the re-shoots where the entire thing got re-shot twice. Insuring, marketing budget and delaying it multiple times likely factored in also.

Wouldn't be surprised if the break-even is around $750-$900m

@bobevanz - and that doesnt even start paying for marketing yet!

That makes more sense but I’m not the type that pretends I know the actual financials of the studios and their movies, considering how notoriously convoluted they are. And I also don’t ignore all the other revenue streams a movie has. Such a short runtime has me nervous about the movie but this movie has a huge advantage of when it’s being released and the lack of other similar fare in that timespan.

@TheUnworthyThor - 'but I’m not the type that pretends I know the actual financials of the studios and their movies' - and why not?

Everyone else here pretends they do 😂😭😩

Origame - 9/21/2023, 7:31 AM
@TheClunges - literally all we don't know for sure is how much they spent on marketing. But since marketing is meant to be proportional to the budget, the rule of thumb is 2.5x budget is the break even point.

The .5 is meant for the theaters because the theaters need to get paid.

So with a budget of $270 mil will require $675 mil just to break even.

Just because you don't know how this works doesn't mean the rest of us don't.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 9/21/2023, 10:49 AM
@Origame - look who it is, mr obsessed 😂

At one point it was twice the the budget to break even and now you lot claim its 2.5x the budget. As I said before, you lot here pretend you know what you're talking about but it's obvious it's all assumptions.

Short version...as usual you don't know shit 😂😮‍💨
Origame
Origame - 9/21/2023, 11:07 AM
@TheClunges - so you constantly in threads with people talking about me means you're not obsessed, but me giving one comment to you makes me obsessed? Nice try.

And dude, I broke down why it is 2.5x. And the reason why some don't include the .5 is because they don't factor in theaters who are getting a cut. It's really not hard to follow.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 9/21/2023, 11:25 AM
@Origame - you did but this rule keeps changing, nobody actually knows how profitable these movies are everyone just assumes until the actual figures are released, which is why I said to the above user just pretend like you know just everyone else does here.

Yes you're obsessed with me, I exist in your dreams 😘
Origame
Origame - 9/21/2023, 11:59 AM
@TheClunges - it literally changed once to account for theaters. When has it ever changed beyond that?

And yes, one comment about your point and not you specifically means I'm obsessed. Those thousands of comments you make about me? That's not obsessed in the slightest. 🙄
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 9/21/2023, 2:30 PM
@Origame - OK so let me get this straight.

I reply to another user here laughing at how everyone on this site pretends to know everything about how much a movie needs to make to break even. You see my comment and think you're important enough to think I'm referring to you so you decided to reply to me even though your name was never mentioned and in your head im the obsessed one? 😮‍💨😂😂

How do you know I wasn't talking about the human spider who likes make the most outlandish box office claims?

The fact of the matter is that you are guessing the break even point and unless you work for disney and are in charge of ringing up the numbers you don't actually know when this movie breaks even 😂😮‍💨
Origame
Origame - 9/21/2023, 4:18 PM
@TheClunges - wow, so much strawmanning. But then again what else is new with you?

I in no way implied you were talking about me specifically. In fact in that initial comment I said we and us. As in, more than just me.

Sure explains why you normally just insult me. When you have to make an actual argument you fall apart in the pressure.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 9/21/2023, 4:55 PM
@Origame - you didn't imply it but you felt compelled to respond lmao. You got nothing ad always and you're obsessed with me 😂😭
Origame
Origame - 9/21/2023, 5:06 PM
@TheClunges - hahahaha. So ignoring the actual words I spoke, it's the fact I'm responding to you that means I'm obsessed. And, again, ignoring the thousands of comments you've made directly about me. 🤣

@marvel72 can you believe this?
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 9/21/2023, 7:44 PM

Gonna need to do similar numbers to the first film to be successful

Guess this will put an end the conversation on whether or not the first film’s success was do to endgame hype or not
JDL
JDL - 9/21/2023, 1:20 AM
@dracula - Given the differences no, too much has changed in the marketplace for it to do that much business. It will do a lot less unless it is unexpectedly great. If it did Guardians 3 B.O. that would be time for a celebration but I expect something in the low $700M area and modest profit at the B.O..
Origame
Origame - 9/21/2023, 7:25 AM
@dracula - yeah. I still don't get why people try to argue captain marvel success wasn't the result of endgame hype. During that phase the mcu kept pulling all these unique superhero movies, yet one of the biggest films they made then was a generic origin story? Even if you liked it, you have to admit it got there because of the end credits of infinity war implying captain marvel would be important

Pretty sure they forgot to add Brie Larson's salary earlier into the final numbers! 😣
