If anyone knows what kind of pressure comes with landing a superhero role in a major comic book movie franchise, it's Brie Larson.

Out of all the actors who've suited-up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years, the Captain Marvel and The Marvels star has arguably faced the most scrutiny and backlash, which was at least partially due to comments she made in interviews that a particular section of the fandom latched onto in an attempt to cast the Academy Award-winner in a certain light.

While speaking to THR for a roundtable interview with several other actresses, Larson was asked about "the vitriol you’ve received from the male-dominated superhero world for playing Captain Marvel."

"I don’t know if it’s specific to Marvel," she replied. "I only know my experience, and my experience is being underestimated at times."

Larson went on to reveal that she is always the first person to reach out to someone who has been cast as a superhero to offer advice on how to navigate the playing field... and make sure they're prepared for the bathroom situation!

"I’m the first person to email everybody because it’s very specific and very strange. People are like, 'I don’t know how to do this.' Yeah, no one does. Why would you? I’ll say, 'Train, because you’ll want to be as prepared in your body as you possibly can because it only gets harder as the job goes on. And really understand how to be able to go to the bathroom in your suit.' The first Captain Marvel, it was a 45-minute thing to get me in and out of that costume."

"It’s a whole thing, and it’s a lot of pressure," she continued. "And I think it’s a strange thing, especially when you’re a newcomer and you’re tasked with being the most powerful blah, blah, blah of blah, blah, blah, and you feel scared. It’s so hard to be the cool, confident one when you’re like, “Do I know what I’m supposed to be doing?”

We don't know when we'll Danvers in the MCU again following the events of The Marvels, but Larson does full intend to reprise the role.

"I think there is still so much inside of Carol," she said in a 2023 interview. "I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn't been and I really loved that for her. I don't want Marvel to come for me, but there is something. There is definitely something."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels is now available to stream on Disney+ and to purchase on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.

"attempt to cast the Academy Award-winner in a certain light."

That certain segment is one she called out. In any other arena singling people out because of their race and gender would be seen as a bad thing. That is unless your white and male. In this case it was a triple whammy. She said 40yr old white men. If someone had said...

I don't care what some 40 year old black woman thinks about Star Wars, it wasn't made for you, then I would expect people will be outraged. Unless you feel that white men are superior.

I don't. But judging by some of the comments I see from so called Progressives it certainly seems like they think so.

Were her comments blown out of proportion? Not really. The personal attacks on her were too much and uncalled for. But calling her out for singling out one group I think was warranted.

@DarthOmega - I can guarantee Josh would be calling for her being fired if she said something like "I don't want to hear some 20 year old black lesbian say what didn't work for her about top gun maverick. It wasn't made for her".

@Origame - Funny thing though, they don't say I don't wanna hear what some straight black 20 year old male has to say about anything- it wasn't made for you...

....they just show it.

@KennKathleen - Not true. Shovel Face aka Laura Ingraham had told LeBron James to shut up and dribble when he expressed his political concerns but fully endorsed Tom Brady when he expressed his.

@KennKathleen - you're right. By talking how dei is important so these groups can see themselves, they're basically saying movies like top gun maverick weren't made for them.

She's. character that works better with an ensemble. I liked Marvels way more than her own movie. Just like Strange, works better with an ensemble.

@valmic - that's how thor was until ragnarok. It sucks because these characters are really good and fun in the comics but struggle in the movies. I wish that more comic writers were consulted on these adaptations.

Idk man

I get there’s a lot of hate going around.

She’s been more chill and cool lately but back in 2019-2021 , you could just tell she was trying to be the cool edgy feminist calling out every male , specially white ones I guess , for not liking her character.
I wonder if these people actually sit down and ponder “well Black Widow was beloved since she was introduced back in 2010. Scarlet Witch’s introduction was well received and she slowly became a fan favorite. Maybe it’s just my attitude and the way I played the character.”

But I think some actor’s egos are too big for introspection.

She seems to have at least learned a bit now tho, so that’s good.

She headlines an MCU movie, it tops a billion $, and everything comes up roses.

She headlines her 2nd MCU movie, it is by far the worst MCU movie(which is saying something), and it flops miserably at the box office.

It is pretty easy to see what happened here.

Anyone saying that misogyny/racism/whateverism caused the backlash is an idiot.

The movie was awful. Learn something from that and do things better next time.

@DocSpock - I found the movie awful in only one key way: the writing i.e. story was god frakking awful. At a lower level of badness the villian was lame. YMMV.

@DocSpock - personally, anytime I see someone calling The Marvels the worst MCU movie, I just take it as fact that they have never seen Thor: Love & Thunder.

I have heard of jay-z & alicia keys, but I don't know what that sentence means or refers to.

I did like the 1st one though it did a really bad job with elements like the Kree.
