THE MARVELS Long-Range Tracking Points To Disappointing $50M-$75M Domestic Debut

The Marvels is set to hit theaters on November 10, and long-range box office forecasts are pointing to a pretty disappointing opening weekend for the Captain Marvel sequel.

According to BoxOfficePro.com, Marvel Studios' latest MCU adventure is expected to take in between $50 million and $75M million domestically.

This wouldn't be a bad haul for a regular studio tentpole, but, well, for some context, the first Captain Marvel movie took in $153 million when it hit theaters back in 2019. The site notes that pre-sale trends for The Marvels are currently 42% behind Eternals, 69% behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and 72% behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

It also mentions that the film could take in as little as $121million -$189 million over the course of its entire domestic run.

Again, these are just long-range predictions, which have been known to be way off in the past, so best not to write off The Marvels just yet.

We recently got confirmation that the sequel will indeed be the shortest MCU movie yet, clocking in at just 1 hour and 45 minutes with credits. Another report indicated that it would also be one of the most modestly budgeted MCU films ($130 million), but this was later debunked. The space-set superhero flick's actual budget is closer to $220 million.

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

Not surprised, this looks terrible, and I'm not even a hater of the first one, which I thought that was fine for an origin movie and was better than most phase 4 movies.

Not the best film to release when Disney are trying to recapture the hype of the MCU of 5 years ago.

Lacklustre trailers for a sequel to a 5 year old movie that was only popular because of the film preceding and succeeding it. It doesn’t have a lot going for it.

Antman 3 is still fresh and as good as guardians 3 was, isn’t going to be enough to drive the enthusiasm train into this film.

I feel bad for Iman Vellani. Her passion and enthusiasm is great but.

Remember a couple of weeks ago when it was reported that this movie *only* had a $100-ish million dollar budget? And everyone said “Okay! Great! After Quantumania Marvel learned that not EVERY movie they make needs to cost a quarter of a billion dollars!”

…and a day later all the movie sites said “Whoops! Nevermind! The Marvels’ production budget is, in fact, $275 million! Our bad! This movie needs to make a billion dollars at the box office to break even!”

@santoanderson - Even if this had a $100M budget it wouldn't have been in response to Quantumania... because this was shot before Quantumania came out.

@santoanderson - the Marvels budget is 220 million

It’s needs 500 mil just to break even, which is possible for the movie.

@JoJo1982 - we're at the point where we don't talk about Marvel movies breaking records, making a billion or do better than the previous movie.

Now it's: "I believe it can break even".

The superhero fad is ending, I wonder what will the next one be though.

@Usernametaken - breaking even is an accomplishment this year when even big franchises are flopping.

Maybe, and hear me out here Marvel, but just maybe if you have a successful movie you don’t change the name of the franchise and shift focus away from the star for it’s first direct sequel (unless you’re Batman and are sharing the focus with The Joker).
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 10/12/2023, 9:23 PM
@TheUnworthyThor - Eh, the name/branding change came at a time when the Marvel brand had a lot of momentum and they tried to get "nerdier" with titles but at this rate, a more market friendly, generic Captain Marvel: Subtitle could have helped. Wouldn't be too surprised if this holds best compared to the first one in markets where it's released as Captain Marvel 2.

@AFriendFromWork - I think it's gonna be super interesting seeing how The Marvels and Aquaman 2 perform. Both came out in the peak of comic book movie hype and grossed over 1bn dollars each. Just 4-5 years later there's like zero enthusiasm around them.

@AllsGood - Dude, gtfo with that nonsense. I've already told you plenty of times, those are ticket sales when tickets were $5-$8. Compare ticket prices, adjust for inflation.

I already tried to make a ban bet with you, if The Marvels makes a profit, I'll stop posting here and won't even come back as an alt, if the movie is a bomb, you leave. You didn't want to take me up on that bet.

They should’ve put this investment into Black Widow. She should’ve had a solo trilogy or at least 2 films years ago

@MyCoolYoung -
I don't think anyone was really asking for this film honestly. Even those that enjoyed Captain Marvel 2, were you really asking for a sequel where she fights a sex-swapped Ronan The Accuser knock-off while swapping places with two other characters that have vaguely defined powers and abilities?

It was possible to make a Captain Marvel sequel and have it resonate with fans, instead it seems they have done everything they can to alienate people's interest:

The first trailer even intentionally referenced the 'smile' controversy that plagued the first film where people were concerned about the directing of Brie Larson (Not being allowed to emote much) and the newer trailers showed off dodgy CGI and the latest trying to avoid showing the film at all just doing flashbacks to more popular characters.

Even the choice of who to include the film, Nick Fury makes some sense but you are requiring your audience to have watched three Disney+ shows to understand the developments with the characters, let alone the world building caused by Secret Invasion where it's revealed Nick Fury lied about securing a place for the Skrulls along with the President making aliens illegal and the creation of a Super Skrull with the powers of every hero and villain who I guess is just doing her own thing?

This movie is tracking to take in less than HALF of that.

SwingsetKnight
SwingsetKnight - 10/12/2023, 9:16 PM
Yeah, I dunno, apart from anything else, the premise just seems kind of small-potatoes on this one. It's like if Winter Soldier's plot basically stalled out at Cap trying to beat Batroc the Leaper because he got hit with an annoying debuff that forced him to become bros with Danny Rand and Fandral first. Is it kind of a funny premise? Sure. Is it must-see event cinema? Not really...

@KaptainKhaos - Because it's Brie Larsson my dude and it has females. That's enough for them(by them i mean the "go woke, go broke" people)... but it doesn't help that this looks like utter crap.

@EgoEgor - what is woke?
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 10/13/2023, 10:52 AM
@JoJo1982 - used to mean something in the black community, now it just means "progressive/left things I don't like or agree with". It's a Trojan horse pejorative to attack left views and they generally use bad media to represent it... nobody labels Mad Max: Fury Road as "woke" yet it is the most feminist and anti-patriarchy action film ever imo.
