THE MARVELS' Ticket Presales Said To Be Pacing Behind DCEU Flops BLACK ADAM And THE FLASH

There's more unfortunate news for The Marvels today as the latest box office update for the Captain Marvel sequel has it generating less interest than movies like Black Adam and The Flash. Check it out...

We're now just days away from The Marvels blasting into theaters but the movie's box office prospects still aren't looking as strong as Marvel Studios would like.

Deadline believes there's a chance the Captain Marvel sequel will open with less than $70 million, an even lower figure than Eternals' $71.2 million in 2021 (bear in mind that dropped at a time many moviegoers were uncertain about returning to theaters).

It's worth noting this information is based on ticket presales as they're said to be pacing behind both Black Adam and The Flash (which debuted with $67 million and $55 million, respectively). Many people might be waiting on reviews or for word-of-mouth given the MCU's recent hit-and-miss track record.

What this means for Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Photon moving forward is hard to say, though they could all be relegated to supporting character status in future projects rather than the lead stars of their own.

Where has it seemingly all gone wrong for The Marvels? The SAG-AFTRA strike certainly hasn't helped as Marvel Studios has been unable to use the sequel's A-List cast to generate any sort of excitement for the movie. That also meant missing this past July's San Diego Comic-Con, while the absence of late-night chat shows has left Marvel with only TV spots and social media posts to try and reach filmgoers.

It's no secret that the MCU is also still going through some growing pains post-Avengers: Endgame, while Secret Invasion doing nothing to set the stage for the movie...well, that was a major missed opportunity.

Then, there's the title. It doesn't mean much to non-fans (why wouldn't you include "Captain Marvel" in there when that movie made over $1 billion?) and the marketing campaign in general has been so-so with largely forgettable trailers. The Marvels feels like a throwaway adventure rather than a must-see event, though the rumoured addition of a Multiversal cameo could go a long way in building buzz.

If the movie exceeds expectations and ends up being one of Marvel Studios' best, then it will be a great shame to see it struggle at the box office. Tracking and presales have been all over the place since the pandemic, though, so you never know what might happen.

Will you be watching The Marvels in theaters this weekend?

In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.

When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."

The movie stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon.

The Marvels is currently set to arrive in theaters on November 10.

@DudeGuy - the best animated movie ever! Here's a fun game: go on your amc or cinemark app and look at opening day tickets, then opening weekend. This will make less than Flash hahaha

@bobevanz - I bought opening night, IMAX, 7pm (meaning: premium) tix 4 hours after on-sale release point. Had elite sightlines.

Went on yesterday (ie: 3 weeks later) and bought more in my row that are connected

That show historically sells out in 1 hour.

3 weeks later it’s only about 65% capacity

This is gearing up to be sll sirts of a major shitshow

Kevin Feige must be sweating right now. I hope this is a wake up call to MCU or any studios that doesn't care about their IP they should do better. not just bringing mediocre films. take their time to create a story that really matters.

Story reads like something haphardly thrown together with the two bangles that allow the wearer to rip open portals to other universes, something that even the Infinity Stones weren't shown to do.

There isn't even an answer from where these bangles come.

Also this is a "funny adventure" with a villainess that is crazy powerfull, but is a one-off.
No more c-list characters after this movie!

Sam Wilson is b-list, his new sidekick Falcon 2 is d-list, but the Serpent Society, Leader and General Ross are cool.

Deadpool & Wolverine are a-list superstars.

This release is coming at a very bad time

@AFriendFromWork - There movies should have been in preproduction AS SOON as they got the rights!!! And they should be from the main MCU universe. I like Alternate Universes but I've never been a Secret Wars fan.

Already the $70-90M industry tracking would be low for this one. Now that it's trailing The Flash? If that comes true, they'll be competing for the biggest box office bomb of the year...

This comes from someone optimistic/excited for this film, very willing to defend it, much as I did the first one but yea, they are not doing anything to inspire confidence in this thing. No special fan screenings like GotG 3 when that was facing muted buzz. What they've done to hype this up is tease the leaked post-credit scenes and add a Thanos connection in the marketing for this that probably won't pay off in the actual film... not good. I'm very aware that with the strikes going on, the typical Marvel hype machine can't go in full motion, but still.

It's wild how different times we're in compared to when the first film came out. Back then, the environment was prime for a major breakout success. The world had never heard about her, but Carol Danvers' debut made half a billion in OPENING WEEKEND. With how tracking is going... this may need a miracle to make as much $$ in total. I thought for sure Quantumania was not gonna be repeated... guess I was right, but this is on the opposite direction lol. Now all press is negative on Marvel; Variety just released a BS hit piece and it's been getting WAY more attention than Loki, which is sooooo [frick]ing good everyone should be talking about it. Instead, it feels like a niche show. I'm not one for doom posting, but Marvel may take one too many Ls before it sees a recovery from building the trust back. Can it even do enough in time for the next Avengers?

@WakandanQueen - The only reason the first one was popular for the GA was its release between IW and EG.

Guardians 3 had buzz in spite of the advertising because the last two produced a group of characters the GA grabbed onto and wanted to see their progression.

CM has her fans, but the last one was mid at best and the characters and story have produced little to no interest without something bigger carrying the movie.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 11/5/2023, 10:48 AM
@JustAWaffle - Yea, its placement in between IW and EG, at that specific position in the momentum of the MCU, is what I mean by "prime environment for breakout success". Just like how IW and EG's success was mainly driven by the momentum of the MCU.

Guardians 3 did have muted buzz, its pre-sales got significant boost by the fan screenings a week in advance. It still opened 20% less than the 2nd film. Which, at the time, was the worst drop between installments for Marvel on opening weekend. The Marvels is about to change that, big time.

I do agree on the last point, I don't think they've done nearly enough with Carol.

Here’s the thing. The movie doesn’t look good, it’s that simple. The trailers are wack. The premise is wack. There’s nothing really going for this other than the fact it’s attached to Marvel, but that isn’t enough anymore.

@TNT928 - I don't think he's excited by what's happening with The Marvels. He's a big Marvel fanboy (and DC hater) who is sad to see the MCU falling through such hard times.

Remember that he tried to defend the horrible Secret Invasion as "Samuel L. Jackson's magnum opus" (to the point that we can wonder if he has seen Die Hard with a vengeance, Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight).

While I didn't hate the first movie I can't say I don't get the lack of interest in this movie.

1. it's build on the back of Carol who, frankly, isn't a very likable character. She started out the first movie like Tony and Strange but never got smacked on the head with the "don't be a dick" plot element that made her a more sympathetic character. That's by no means Brie's fault but the writers, I'm still convinced that Brie can pull off a likable lead.

2. both secondary leads are a lot more likable but aren't that well known given their TV origins, not everyone has seen WandaVision and a lot less have seen Ms. Marvel (they should though, it's great).

3. the first movie wasn't bad but got a LOT of flack, some deserved and some undeserved but the general concensus is that it's one of the lesser MCU movies.

4. Aside of the three leads and Fury (who probably got more screentime to compensate for the lack of known/beloved lead characters) there hasn't been a focus on the villain or side-characters in marketing that could alleviate the lack of memorable leads.
Like with Ant-Man 3, even if you didn't like Scott or Hope you still had Hank, Janet, Kang, Bill Murray and Cassie to get excited over. The marketing for The Marvels is focused on Carol, Monica, Kamala, Fury & Goose. I haven't really gotten any sense for the villains yet.

5. Marvel is out of its "I can do whatever I want" phase now with the public, blunders like Eternals and L&T have turned the general movie goer a lot more sceptical over their movies.
Not all of their movies are guranteed showstoppers, anymore. Hence that scrutiny will touch this movie as well added to the first movies muted reception.

Note: I won't say that this movie will flop, there's every chance this will have legs. But of all of Marvels upcoming movies this one was always going to have it the hardest to succeed.
"Eternals" was something new with great trailers, "No Way Home" had the nostalgia boost, "GOTG3" was the end of a trilogy with universally beloved characters, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" was a hype generator given the potential and cameo-rumors, "Quantummania" intorduced Kang, "Deadpool 3" will feature the return of Wolverine and most of the FOX-Men, "Captain America 4" is rumored to feature Hulk/Red Hulk/Bucky/She-Hulk to help Sam carry the movie, Thunderbolts features a bunch of popular characters in WS/US Agent/Red Hulk/Yelena and Blade is popular on his own.

The Marvels will have an uphill battle, I'm not rooting against it but after the "failure" of Ant-Man 3 (it wasn't neccessarily a failure at the BO in the end but given expectations of other MCU movies it was indeed a failure) I don't have too much hope this will turn the ship around.

The upcoming slate of Marvel movies sounds very promising, I just would have replaced Cap4 with Shang-Chi 2. The first one was such a breath of fresh air in the MCU that I would have loved that to see followed up on than another Cap movie.
Maybe they should have made Cap4 into a second season of FatWS rather than it's own movie and focus on Red Hulk in the Thunderbolts movie.

@Blergh -
One of the biggest aspects about the first films writing that has screwed them over is that Captain Marvel was not given a defined or engaging character. For a majority of the film she lacks her memories and lacks her powers. She's not really facing any difficulty or obstacle with the general idea being she's been powerful the entire time and just needs to pick herself back up.

Even those who presumably enjoyed Captain Marvel have no real connection to her character so have no desire to really engage with the sequel. What does Carol Danvers want? The only thing they could mention in the trailers for the sequel was just the general idea of her protecting her 'home' but that's not engaging enough.

It's why the drop-off is so massive, because if a majority of the audience connected with the character then we'd see people actively going to see the film regardless because they want to see what happens next. I'd expect to see this issue with many of the Phase 4/5 newly introduced characters who have not had enough development to tie audiences to them yet are getting pushed into the focus.

My slate would have looked a little different tbh.

Movies -
2024: WolverineXDeadpool (Summer Season)
2024: Shang-Chi & the Edge of Time (Christmas Season)
2025: Thunderbolts (Summer Season)
2025: Doctor Strange & the Midnight Suns (replacing "Blade" and having Strange/Clea chased by the Midnight Suns as a team for accidentally releasing Dormammu)

TV
(every main series goes to 4 seasons and gets 6 episodes each; no massive budgets anymore. 5M per episode max.)

2024: Captain America & the Winter Soldier (aka. FatWS Season 2, leading up to Red Hulk)
2025: Nomad & the Winter Soldier (aka FATWS Season 3, Sam/Bucky go on the run after being blamed for the fallout of Thunderbolts)
2026: Sam Wilson & the Winter Soldier (aka. FATWS Season 4, dealing with Sam letting go of any mantle and realising that being a hero isn't about monikers)

2024: She-Hulk: Family Law (aka. She-Hulk Season 2, building up to the troubles between Bruce and Skaar)
2025: She-Hulk: Superhero Victims Unit (aka. She-Hulk Season 3, She-Hulk defends the Avengers against the NATO for the fallout of Thunderbolts that Ross blames on them)
2026: She-Hulk: U.K. (aka. She-Hulk Season 3, heading to the UK to introduce UK based heroes like Captain Britain that needs representation)

2024: Ms. Marvel & the Mutants (aka. Ms. Marvel Season 2, introducing Jubilee as Kamala returns to earth and wants to find out more about her mutant gene)
2025: Ms. Marvel vs. the Sentinels (aka. Ms. Marvel Season 3, introducing Trask and the Sentinel program; reveals that the US knew of mutants)
2026: Ms. Marvel Goes to School (aka. Ms Marvel season 4, fully introduces Xaviers School for the gifted and sees Kamala finally settle in)

2024: Loki - Blood Brothers (aka. Loki Season 3, growing tired of his role as Time Keeper Loki finds the main 616 Thor still struggling over all the loss he encountered. Turning into a buddy comedy between two brothers rebonding)
2025: Loki - Fate Becomes You (aka. Loki Season 4, introduces Lady Death who comes for Loki for cheating his fate and the canon death in Infinity War. Loki assembles his friends and allies to defend himself what ultimately might be his final fate)

2024: WandaVision - VisionQuest (aka. WandaVision Season 2; deals with WhiteVision finding himself again and making his way to the Witches Road to rescue Wanda.)
2025: WandaVision - Redeeming the Wicked (aka. WandaVision Season 3; deals with Wanda overwhelmed by her gried and running from Vision who is only seeking to redeem her.)
2026: WandaVision - Into the Multiverse (aka. WandaVision Season 4; sees Vision and Wanda saying goodbye to their universe and traveling the Multiverse for a world where their children exist and need them.)

In general their TV slate should be considered more like regular TV in terms of budget and releasing.
30 episodes each year over 5 shows with 30Mil budgets each. That must be enough. Sure VFX and casting will suffer but that's not what this is about. Elizabeth Olsen doesn't need 30Mil alone to return to a role.
