Programming the DC Streaming Network from Warner Brothers

Programming the DC Streaming Network from Warner Brothers

With the announcement of the streaming network, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. This is my idea for how to schedule the network...

Now that Warner Brothers has announced a streaming service for DC Comics programming, the question is, how do you program it?  I have a few suggestions, hopefully some will agree.

First, WB needs to provide 2 versions of the service.  The first version is the live stream only.  They can use commercial revenue to pay for the live stream, and use their shows to fill a 24 hour schedule.  This version would be free to view.  The second version would be a live stream and an on demand service combo.  With this, you could call it a premium package, and actually charge for the on demand capability.  This would give you 2 sources of revenue for the network.  It would also give to the fans who cannot afford another pay service, while still generating subscriptions to make the network a success.

Next, you have to figure out programming blocks.  Personally, I see a block of animation every morning from 7am to noon.  Say, a Filmation hour, followed by an hour of the Super Friends, and so on.  At noon, you start the live action series.  The live action blocks can go one of 2 ways.  Either you could have daily programming, or you could run block of shows through the day.  For instance, you could do “Metropolis Monday,” “Gotham City Tuesday,” “Wonderful Women Wednesday,” “Smallville Thursday,” and “The Flash and Arrow Friday.”  With these choices, you could give a variety of programming, or you could just do a daily schedule and run the shows everyday.  Also, you can run shows that are from WB that fit the bill of the network, as in Chuck, The Man from Atlantis, Time Trax, Witchblade, and so on.  This would give you more potential programming and would not go against the foundation or genre of the network.

Third, you HAVE to provide special and original programming to be a success.  Titans and Young Justice Season 3 are great starts.  I would also love to see a JSA series set in WWII.  I think a great (and relatively inexpensive to produce) companion series to Titans would be The Question.  My final and favorite idea is a series of movies based on the Just Imagine Stan Lee Presents line of comics.  This would take arguably the greatest and biggest fan favorite comics creator and bring his stories to life, stories that otherwise would probably never get made into live action OR animation.

Finally, I would love to see a weekly, hour long news show, like DC All Access on YouTube.  You could easily find a spot for it in the line-up.  For example, you could run Wonder Woman Monday through Friday at 5.  Since there was such a limited run of the series, you could pre-empt the show every Wednesday and run the news program.  This would not only give a regular time slot to the news show, but it would also extend the number of weeks that Wonder Woman would be able to run without re-airing the shows as fast.

After the network has built up revenue and support, you could then look to branch out.  With the addition of revenue, you could start to buy programming like The Bionic Woman, the Six Million Dollar Man, Xena, Hercules, The Misfits, The Tick, Misfits of Science, and so on.  Obviously, Marvel will probably never be available, as it is owned by Disney and the biggest rival the network would have, but there are plenty of options available without using Marvel shows or films.

Thanks for taking the time to read and be sure to comment on what you think I got right or wrong and your ideas as well...

Those are some interesting ideas. It's going to be fascinating to see how this turns out. There is a LOT of time to fill on a tv network schedule. They can burn through content really quickly and see a major drop in viewers if they aren't careful. How they balance the content from one month to the next to keep it fresh is going to be something to see. I'm really looking forward to it.

@TomSolo - Yeah, it's gonna be even more awesome Because This could inspire DC to bring more Teen Titans S6, Beware the Batman, Green Lantern: The New Animated Series, Constantine S2, Powerless, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, Powerless,The Batman, Batman: The Brave And the Bold, Legion Of Superheroes and Marvel to open their own Streaming service and Revive shows like Most Wanted, Agent Carter S3, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH, Ultimate Spider-Man, Iron Man: Armored Adventures, The Super Hero Squad show, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Spectacular Spider-man and Wolverine and the X-Men. This could potentially start A superhero renaissance and animation arms race!!

@TomSolo - agreed, there is a lot to consider. They definitely have the advantage in the library over Marvel. Regardless, I've been wanting a comics based network for years.

@brodie999 - I'm not sure if they will resurrect every show, but there were rumors of Disney starting a Marvel/Star Wars network as well
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/9/2017, 2:15 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Well, Depending on how well YJ does, They could revive every show that didn't resolve their plot lines or fully explain things. Even though they've ran their course, Skaar's true origins haven't been fully explained, Some bad guys like Scorpio and Man Wolf are still out there And Speedball, Echo and Gravity haven't been recruited for SHIELD Academy yet. I hope they revive Star Wars Rebels and the Clone Wars on the new Marvel/Star Wars networks if the latter's plot points don't get resolved in S4. Hey, Where did you hear about this rumor, anyway?
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/9/2017, 11:08 PM
@brodie999 - I don't want to name the source, as I do not know if they are allowed to divulge the information. I will say the person is VERY reliable and in the know. It has been over a year since I was told, so it is possible there will be no Marvel/Star Wars network. It is really unfortunate for the fans that Disney and WB cannot work together and combine their properties into one network...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/10/2017, 1:23 AM
@EntertainmentAddict - Well, I hope if DC's streaming service is a success, Then Disney can open their own Marvel/Star Wars network so they can rival DC's and join the number of companies that made Streaming services, confirming the rumor that was made about over a year.
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/10/2017, 2:15 PM
@brodie999 - It would be a win win for the fans. Never did understand the people who were Marvel or DC only. Both companies have so much to offer the fans...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/10/2017, 6:08 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, I agree. We're getting sick and tired of them cancelling shows and retiring video Game franchises. It's time they revive them on their streaming services and make new video Games like Lego Batman 4, Batman Arkham 5, Marvel Super Hero Squad 4, Spider-Man:Web of Shadows 2, Spider-man: Friend or Foe 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 And a sequel to Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time.

@brodie999 - I've never been a big gamer, but I would love to see a return to animated series of the 90s like Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Justice League, The Tick, and so on...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/10/2017, 11:14 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, I agree. I'd love to see A return of the 1990s X-Men and X-Men: Evolution shows. Even though The 1990s incredible hulk, Iron Man, and Fantastic Four shows were terrible to begin with, they were still improving in their second Seasons. I want to see them revived for S3 on The Streaming Service so we can see what plot points the characters do and see what new enemies the heroes face.
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/10/2017, 11:16 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - And I'd love to See the return of the 90s Spider-Man, Superman, Batman and Justice League shows too!! But I Want Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes and Spider-Man: The New Animated Series to come back on the streaming service too because their remaining plot points haven't been resolved yet.

@brodie999 - I have to say, I do hope they look into turning the Stan Lee versions into specials on the DC network, like I mentioned above. That is about the only way they will ever get made, and it would be awesome to see them come to life. Also, they could get Stan to record intros for each. I'd also love to see a new live action Wonder Woman, but with her success at the box, she is not going to be licensed back to TV anytime soon. That is OK, I just want more stories NOW ;-)
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/11/2017, 9:12 AM
@brodie999 - What Marvel shows do you think they could only do in a streaming network? Besides rehashing the old shows (Agent Carter included, but would be awesome to see her return)
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/11/2017, 1:47 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, I hope they Make new DCAU and Arrowverse shows in the DC network too because they can't all be on the CW. We can have Blue Beetle And Booster Gold, Shazam Family and Justice Society of America shows set in the universe as Arrow, The Flash, Vixen, Constantine, Freedom Fighters: the Ray and Legends of Tomorrow. Hopefully, This'll set the stone for Superman and Batman shows set in the Arrowverse once Gotham is over. That way, We can have A Justice League Show with all original 7 founding members of JL from the comics.
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/11/2017, 2:58 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - I think Cancelled shows like Hulk: Gamma Corps (which was originally folded into EMH) and Thor: Adventures in Asgard and maybe MAU shows based on Captain America, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Iron Man could work on the network. They never got The chance to air on Disney XD even though the Disney TV CEO said A Iron Man show was in development. Heck, Maybe the Hulk and Thor shows can be in the Yost universe with EMH and WATXM and Christopher Yost and Joshua Fine can come back For the shows so they can be critically acclaimed just like the last 2 shows. That way, they can explore more about their backstories, their rogue gallery and supporting casts.

EntertainmentAddict - 6/12/2017, 4:46 PM
@brodie999 - I've been less than thrilled with Gotham, but that season finale was great. Would also love to see more Arrowverse shows on the streaming network. Not sure if they can bring back Constantine since it'll be animated on the CW Seed
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/12/2017, 4:48 PM
@brodie999 - Marvel needs more quality live action series like Agent Carter and fewer like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The 70s Hulk remains their best series in my eyes, but hopefully it will change with the new shows they are developing
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/12/2017, 9:05 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Well, We're just gonna have to wait And See. Depending on YJ S3's success. They might change their mind and cancel the animated Constantine show on the CW Seed and bring the live action one back So they can do a full crossover with the Arrowverse on the show.
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/12/2017, 9:08 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, I agree. And The network is just what they need because they can't fit everything in ABC, Freeform, Hulu, Disney XD or Netflix. Hopefully, When Avengers Assemble And Guardians of the Galaxy end on S4, They'll revive Them for S5 on the network if they leave any plot points out and They'll be able to cheapen up the money so they can air new shows and resurrect old ones on there.

@brodie999 - It's definitely a lot of potential and the most exciting time to be a comic book fan
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/14/2017, 2:52 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, And if Fans want more seasons of the old shows after Marvel revives them for new seasons. We gotta watch the heck out of all the episodes and help spread the word so that as many people as possible watch as many times as possible. There's still a lot of places to go for old shows and people would love to see the heroes fight new bad guys.
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/14/2017, 11:16 PM
@brodie999 - But, back to the DC network, I really would like to see a new Wonder Woman series. At least an animated series like they did with the Batman Animated Series after the Batman movie. Even better, get the same crew from Batman TAS and have them make a Wonder Woman series. What do you think about the possibility of turning Stan Lee's versions into movies for the network? I mean, I know they would not fly as a theatrical release, but I would love to see them turned into live action, and the streaming network HAS to do special presentations and original programming to survive...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/15/2017, 1:20 AM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, I Think they could detail his life's work With Marvel and Get A young actor to play him in when he was in the late 30s to 50s while using Make up for him to play him in his 50s- 90s in the modern Day. and Yeah, I'd love to see A Wonder Woman Show on the network. They could make it in the DCAU since they're gonna try to Get the same crew from Batman TAS, thus reviving the universe that started With Timm and Dini. Although Dwayne Mcduffie won't be back because he died from heart surgery in 2012.

EntertainmentAddict - 6/15/2017, 7:52 AM
@brodie999 - A Stan Lee life story would be pretty awesome, I think. I would kind of like a new version of Wonder Woman animated though, just because they need a different telling than the Justice League. I was not overly thrilled with her background on there, but I did love the series. I would like to see the contest to get the mantle of Wonder Woman and for her to be Diana Prince as well.I think they should develop a show for The Question to pair up with Titans, as it should be fairly inexpensive to produce, as it would not be high on the need for special effects.
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/15/2017, 2:48 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Well, They can at least show what she's doing on superhero duty when she's not on the Justice League while still showing her DCAU origin and getting Wonder Girl as a new sidekick.
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/15/2017, 10:16 PM
@brodie999 - By her background, it is the same as the film version, she takes the mantle of Wonder Woman rather than win the mantle. It works, but I like the traditional story. However, I would love to see her villains displayed on the screen finally, outside of Cheetah and Ares that is...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/16/2017, 1:33 AM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, characters from DC are getting their DCEU redesigns. I think they should place This show After The Wonder Woman and Justice League movies because We need A DC show that takes all eras from the classic comics and other resources like the New 52 comics and The DC Extended Universe. Y'Know, Like Spectacular Spider-Man and Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes style.
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/16/2017, 10:44 PM
@brodie999 - Of course, another show that might get a second life is Powerless. It kept improving with each episode and has potential to become so much more. They can take the concept and rework it to something else (like the sell of Wayne Tech to LuthorCorp in the Adam West episode) or they can take what it is and continue to build on that. So excited for teh potential of this network...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/16/2017, 10:51 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, I agree. I think they Should revive Marvel Anima and Marvel Disk Wars too. they kept introducing new characters every episode especially with the Madhouse movies and if they do, They'll bring the FF and Dr.Doom into Disk Wars because they were absent in all 51 episodes and Make Captain America and She-Hulk shows set in the Marvel Anime Universe because they've got so many more characters to introduce into it like Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and Daredevil, Just to name a few. They just need the money to Convince Madhouse To help bring them back.
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/17/2017, 12:05 AM
@brodie999 - if Disney does a network, will they be able to get the rights for non-Marvel studio shows like Mutant X, NightMan, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and other live action fare. Same token, will DC get the rights for Batman and Swamp Thing?
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/17/2017, 1:11 AM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, If They Want to revive them, They will do that and replace The Actors playing them in the 60-80 since most of them are old guys or Dead by now. Maybe they Can make them Darker Than they Were back in the old days. And maybe If Disney navigates the monopoly law after the AT&T and WB merger regarding mergers, They might buy Sony, Paramount and Netflix and put their shows on the network too. The Reason why I want this to happen is because they lacked the creative spirit they once had even after they acquired Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar. These recent Developments could be Game changing. If we spread the word to as many people as possible and show our support for it, Disney might be able To give us What We want by buying the companies they need to Save ESPn. I think Paramount Would be the first of these hypothetical options for Disney to consider pursuing since it's A cheap company to get At least $10 Billion. But Sony's value is in trouble and if Things don't improve this year, It Could wind up seeing its potential sale Price drop to $25 Billion or less. And If it keeps dipping below that level, Then the moment a major slide starts to pause is A time For another Company to swoop in and try to buy it for a bargain price. And In the purely hypothetical scenario, Consider that A Sony price Tag in the $24-or-less range means it's possible to acquire Sony And Paramount in theory for around $34 Billion, The IP they own And the back catalogues should make that A tremendously tempting opportunity. Netflix would probably cost Disney $70 Billion According To a Guy named Todd Juenger so that'S a harder get but still worthwhile and the total package Deal for Sony-Paramount-Netflix is just a bit north of $100 Million- Steep, But the payoff is enormous For Disney since they'd instantly have the dominant streaming service with a massive library of Content past and present to fill up that service, as Well As the glaringly obvious best way to save ESPN. With All these new Acquisitions, Disney will fuel all these Studios with money to produce faster and more efficiently, further Expand their holdings, build a bigger catalogue of new properties to develop, have their own platform for sharing content with the largest possible audience As directly as possible and finding a way to Save ESPN from a slide that continues to be the one small Drag on the Company's stock and performance overall.

EntertainmentAddict - 6/17/2017, 6:09 PM
@brodie999 - the only thing is a merger with Netflix won't really give them the rights to air the shows on a potential Marvel/Star Wars network, because the deal would have to be reworked for a new service.
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/17/2017, 6:47 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Okay, I Understand. Then They'll have to abandon the idea and air all their, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Sony and Paramount's shows and movies on Netflix instead because the back catalogue of Movies and TV Shows would be a boon in the aftermath of A Netflix purchase that would surely See some competitors ending their deals to stream content On Netflix and Disney would Add House of Cards, Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, Orange is the new Black, Marco Polo, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Mission Impossible, G.I Joe, Transformers, Terminator, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Trek, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak And Daxter, Ghostbusters, Men In Black, Jump Street, Underworld, Resident Evil And (If Sony manages to extend their Deal with MGM to make Bond 25 with Daniel Craig) James Bond to their long list of franchises to develop on movies, TV shows and Streaming. and I'd Say with that new platform, Disney can approach Fox and Constantin about Trading the marvel Franchises back, in exchange For a good Deal for Fox Movies on Netflix. Offer to top any OBO or other outlet offers for Fo content And offer FX exclusive broadcast TV Rights to Disney movies when they go to broadcast Television. A Combo of Exclusive FX Access to Disney Premiere on Broadcast Networks plus A great deal for Streaming Fox movies on Netflix is the deal to offer. I'd Say Getting the X-Men and Fantastic Four is one obvious answer Disney would seek to increase their selection of franchises to exploit not only cinematically but also Via Netflix after A purchase of the streaming service, which is why a deal with Fox will become important at that point. The potential for Marvel inserting X-Men into the MCU cinematically is huge, But the massive amount of properties in the whole mutants basket means exploiting that via Netflix TV Shows is huge too. So I think they definitely can pull if off for company that's already 3 times as big as its size to get bigger and wider.
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/21/2017, 3:23 PM
@brodie999 - And One more thing, Verizon finally bought Yahoo. Besides, It's A Brave New world in the media Sector and I'm sure many of us will be Excited to see where it takes us and Disney will do what ever It takes to be around in the future. And These new Acquisitions Will be one of the things they'll do to expand their presence around the world and become a even more unstoppable force to be reckoned with. There's enough strong reasons for it to make me and Mark think that there's a chance that it could happen.
EntertainmentAddict
EntertainmentAddict - 6/24/2017, 6:33 AM
@brodie999 - The only issues are Broadcast rights and deals that are already in place as far as getting the programs to air on the streaming service. Also, if one company keeps buying out the other services, there is no competition, which hurts everyone. Not sure if you are a wrestling fan, but WWE proves how bad no competition is. They have minor competitors, but nothing to make them really try. I fear the same with the streaming services with no competition. Prices will rise and quality will fall...
brodie999
brodie999 - 6/24/2017, 3:59 PM
@EntertainmentAddict - Yeah, And Once Disney buys these Companies, They'll restore their franchises's quality And make businessman open new film Companies and streaming services so Disney Can get more competitors in the aftermath of these moves and they won't try to buy them, They'll just easily crush them by breaking new box office Records and blasting their way through $15 Billion for the first time.
brodie999
