WonderWoman Gets 21st Century makeover

Okay, people, just saw this on Yahoo. Take it how you want to take it. Also, I’m not sure if this has been already posted. According to Yahoo (The Buzz)

Attention all obsessive comic fans! Set your mood dials to "outraged." Wonder Woman, one of the most popular superheroes of all time, is getting a new look.

Even casual fans of the Amazon Princess can spot her famous threads a mile away. Blue shorts with white stars, a bold bustier, and bright red boots that make Superman's look downright tasteful. All that's about to change, though. Starting with this month's comic, Wonder Woman starts wearing pants.

You can almost hear the fanboys screaming. But, according to a popular blog from CNN, there is a reason for the switch. Writer J. Michael Straczynski, who is taking over writing the comic, commented on a DC Comics blog post, "I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility." She's been saving the world for 69 years. If you ask us, it's only fair that she finally treated herself to some new threads.

So, what are the specifics? The biggest news is that she'll lose the hot pants, and wear tight blue pants instead. The famous bracelets are still around, but, according to Straczynski, they'll be more colorful, "with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark." As Straczynski puts it, "this is a Wonder Woman who signs her work."

But it's not just Wonder Woman's appearance that's been changed. Her back story is different, too. The New York Times explains: "In the reimagining of her story, Wonder Woman, instead of growing up on Paradise Island with her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and her Amazon sisters, is smuggled out as a baby when unknown forces destroy her home and slaughter its inhabitants." Clearly, this is a darker version for a more dangerous world.

Not surprisingly, the news of Wonder Woman's new look and history inspired huge searches on Yahoo. Look-ups for "wonder woman changes," "new wonder woman," and "wonder woman outfit" all roared to life. Others wanted to know more about Wonder Woman's alter ego. (FYI, she goes by the name Diana Price when she's not kicking criminal butt.) And lest you think her classic look will simply fade away, consider this: Searches on "sexy wonder woman outfit" have already started their ascent in preparation for Halloween.

So here it is!

If she had been wearing that for the last 69 years, I doubt anyone would know who Wonder Woman was today. Another failed attempt to make an iconic character cooler. They even changed her iconic story. So the question is, is this Wonder Woman? Same name, but different back story, different costume, heck even a different alter ego. Just like Godzilla 98, this is Wonder Woman in name only.

DC tends to do this a lot; remeber blue energy Superman, she will be back to normal in a few months. I also agreed with Anil: JMS is a great writer let's see where he is going with this.

GIMMICK! and not even a very clever one. The old costume change routine. How many times have we seen this tired gag when a character's sales were crappy?

Can anyone think of a title character costume change that actually worked? I know that I can think of about a BILLION that didn't.

This reeks of the nineties grasping-at-straws method of churning out comics that made the nineties SUCK!

Clearly this is one of two, or possibly both things: increase book sales, and, or prep her for the potential movie.
Face facts: all the guys want to see the Lynda Carter look on the big screen. Marketing and pragmatism may be telling DC/Warner Bros. this is the direction they need to go.
Changing her back story is ludicrous.

@marvelguy

I don't know. Sex sells and the orginal costume has a lot of sex appeal that this costume does not (in fact it has zero). The 18-35 demographic is way more likely to pay to see an actress dressed like Linda Carter than some over dressed emo fly girl.

Wonder Woman's costume need to be very re-designed. The element that has to be removed from her costume is her jacket. She needs sex appeal. The top could be better and the ww on her top needs to be changed to some thing better. Her costume has to be re-designed something like Thor and Captain America new custume. Her costume has to be similar to Diana Wonder from Superman and Batman 61. Her pants have to be tights not black and match the top of her costume. The bracelet, tiara the and neck are good but should match the costume too. Her boats have to be red and gold. With all that done we have a great Wonder Woman costume.
