Do You Still Read Comics?

Most discussions on this site are based on comics, but do you still keep up with comics or do you think they're all junk now?

With the events of Convergence over, and Secret Wars going full speed ahead, there's been a lot of comics talk. Everyone has been debating the quality of new comics. The fact is, this is a site called comicbookmovie.com. Most everything we talk about is based on comics.
 
Now, let's be honest. Whether we like it or not, modern comics are going to have an impact on comic book tv shows, movies, etc. Of course, we know there are influences from bronze, silver, and golden age comics too, but modern comics are extremely influential. A great thing about this site is the fact that you can keep up with what's going on in modern comics without actually reading them. That's not to say that you shouldn't read modern comics, but anything you don't follow can be summed up in a short article.
 
There are multiple reasons some people don't read modern comics. Some feel that the stories are repetitive. Others feel that the comics reflect the movies too much and are basically just an advertisement for the movies. Then there are some who just don't have the money to keep up with many comics. They feel they are too expensive. Whatever the reason, it seems to have become normal for comic book movie fans not to read modern comics.
 
Personally, I think there are some great stories still being told in modern comics. The Flash New 52 run, Ant Man, Silk, and Chrononauts are just a few of my favorites. Now, my favorites feature DC, Marvel, and independent comics so I'm not trying to start a flame war here. I'm just interested in how the comic community feels about modern comics. Haven't been an avid reader.
I plan to read each comic the cbm's & cbtv's are based off out of curiosity but barely any are actually beholden to a given source. Emphasis on adaptation.
In the meantime, I'm reading every Valiant title and some IDW issues as I try to get my hand on any older Marvel/DC stuff that catches my eye.

I really have only been keeping up with new Batman (up to issue 40) and when the new Hawkeye line was going on. Other than that, I am trying to expand to reading most major comic stories. Oh, and I keep up on IDW TMNT.

Not as much as I did in the past. One of the reasons is money and another is I don't like the New 52 universe as much as the Pre New 52 one. I get most of my Marvel and DC fix from my library though and just read the main ones from them they get. Sadly they only get the most famous character ones, so I don't read much outside of those ones.

A little. Mostly Punisher, Captain Marvel, and Deadpool.

(Mind you, I'm Brazillian, so I'm talking about issues that were released in the US three to four years ago and just now are being released here)

Old ones in collected volumes I do. I don't really read anything recent only like one or two graphic novels from the New 52 and havent touched any new Marvel comics, but I can say honestly they just need more story ideas and better writers...

If you don't read modern comics because you have a problem with the quality, I suggest you read:

-Ultimate Spider-Man (Brian Michael Bendis run)

-Punisher MAX (Garth Ennis and Jason Aaron run)

-Batman (Scott Snyder run)

-Civil War event

-Green Lantern (Geoff Johns run)

-Hellblazer (any run)

-Batman: Earth One

-Batgirl (Gail Simone run)

-Thor (Jason Aaron run)

-Daredevil (Brian Michael Bendis run)

-Wonder Woman (Brian Azzarello and Gail Simone runs)

That should be enough to restore your faith in modern comics.

90s comics are the only really horrible era in comics. Modern comics are very intriguing and the dialogue is more realistic. Definitely check out any of the books Darkknight2149 recommended.

Been a little over a year since I picked my last one up. And the reason for my absence hasn't been quality, but it just kind of got old paying so much for them because I followed so many series. Granted, I hate spending money in general.

I generally wait for trades as opposed to single issues, hardback preffered, i just finished the latest silver surfer trade, east of west, black science, death academy, walking dead, uncanny avengers, x force, x men, nightcrawler, and sinestro (the last one in single issues because I'm a fan of the character) my fav character is thor but i don't collect girl thor, get my fix through avengers, love the Hyperion thor bromance although i don't care much for hyperion.

I just pick up the trades of stuff that picks up my interest. Most of the series that I pick up end after a while. A lot recently btw. She-Hulk, Hawkeye, Batwoman. Some I drop because the creative changed, ie Wonder Woman. I never keep up with the so called 'main story line' and like my books to steer clear of cross-overs and line wide events.

I'm still working on completing my Dr Strange run. It's slow going in Europe, getting your hands on issues from the 80's and earlier, thinking of ordering the rest in from the States. (I've got the Masterworks books to fill in the really early stuff so only got 25 issues to go.)

Other than that I occasionally stroll through stores and internet to see what older stuff I can come across. I've recently taken a liking to more journalistic stuff, like Guy Delisle and Joe Sacco.

Really need to check out Starman one of these days. And buy those omnibusses of Simonson's Thor. Also those Wonder Woman books by Simone and Azzarello. Etc. Etc.

Oh yeah, I've been keeping up with Fantagraphics reprints of Prince Valiant. Gorgeous books.

I get trades of stuff and prefer reading comics that way, but I haven't read anything from the current runs from the big 2 in at least two years. Mainly because I think they've been dumbed down to suit a younger audience.

Yes, cosmic stuff has been massively dumbed down and I hate it. There was a time when cosmic comic books provided philosophy and actually made you think about the human condition as you read them, but now it's all jokes and cool space tech. If Marvel can get back to the times when shit like this would happen in a cosmic story:



It's practically Shakespearean! Instead we get a comic centred around a character who can only say three words. I've liked recent Avengers stories and X-Men too, but beyond that, I find the comics nowadays are of a relatively low quality.

Yes I read I do still read comics not the latest stuff though. I have Marvel Unlimited and I wish DC had something similar. I've read that ComiXology plans to do a monthly subscription as well. Because lets be honest it's expensive. I only tend to buy stuff by my favorite artists. The apps give me access to stuff I just want to read not necessarily own.

Well ... yes and no.

I have stacks of trades based around my favorite characters ... Green Lantern, Superman, Daredevil, Batman. Also Sandman and Hellblazer, and I'm working my way through Preacher right now.

There's a bunch of graphic novels on my shelf; Watchmen, Akira, Maus, V for Vendetta...

As far as currently running series, there's a couple I follow. Action Comics by Pak and Kuder, Scott Snyder's Batman. Occasionally I'll check out the main Green Lantern title again. The only Japanese manga I read right now is Attack on Titan, though I've been told I should check out Tokyo Ghoul.

So actually ... yeah, I guess I do read a shit ton of comics.

As far as Marvel goes, I think I checked out Superior Spider-Man once and found it clinically retarded.
But the current Secret Wars is pretty cool. I still haven't picked up the new one, but I really liked the first three.

As of right now, I'm not collecting issue by issue anymore.

Instead I'm getting trade paper backs of the classics/favorites.

I wouldn't mind to start collecting though.

Just it's too much money right now. Plus there aren't as many good runs it seems right now...

I can tell you that I won't read The All New, All Different Marvel. What a bunch of terrible ideas. Usually, you remake a 'universe' with a parallel or alternate. To say that this isn't a "What if?" scenario is disingenuous to the iconic characters which they are apparently unable to continue to write and draw creatively.

Yes & No. i've gathered so many over the years that sit in a spare room gathering dust and are probably worthless barring a few Absolute editions. I tend to read events or special arc's mainly.

if i'm feeling like i need a catch up......Pirate Bay it is.
