What are the main ingredients of a good movie? A solid cast? A good plot? A solid script? In all honesty, all these play a major factor in the making of a good movie. However, I believe having characters you truly care about trumps all. You can have a movie with cool effects and great action but if you find yourself not caring whether a character is going to die or not there is a big problem. In the world of movies or more specifically comic book movies, its really tricky for the death of a character to be effective; especially when the character keeps appearing dead for a few seconds and wakes up just fine or fakes his or her death. But even when a character is permanently dead, it may not hit home with me (Rachel Dawes).
So read below to see the CBM deaths that hit me hard and what emotion it got out of me.

Growing up, I never read the Watchman graphic novel and to this day I still haven't.  But that doesn't change how connected I felt with the character of Rorschach. Throughout the movie, the audience follows the vigilante as he attempts to solve the murder of former teammate, 'The Comedian' . We get emotionally attached to the character during his time in prison when he explains what turned him into the man he is and his touching moment with his friend Daniel where he apologizes for his attitude (Nite Owl)  It is established early on in the film that Rorschach is the main character, which made his sudden death at the hands of Dr. Manhattan so surprising. His never 'compromise' attitude ultimately led to his demise and we know there was no easy way around the situation he was in since truth would end in the world in war again. However, that doesn't change the fact that having his best friend watch him blow up was that much heartbreaking. To be honest, I wish Nite Owl had ripped Ozymandias to pieces for what he caused.

Another character from the Watchmen movie. Established early on as a close friend of the new Nite Owl, Hollis Mason (the old Nite Owl) doesn't get a whole lot of screen time. He only shows up three times in the movie yet when he is murdered by a gang of thugs who want to settle a rivalry, my blood boiled. I don't know what is was that got to me so much. Whether it was my sheer hatred of gangs or the unfairness of the fight, I just can't put my finger on it. One thing that might have made me feel better was to see the low lives tossed out a sky scrapper. However, the only type of retribution we see is the new Nite Owl punch the teeth out of someone dressed in the same fashion as the gang member and while that was enjoyable, the fact that we never saw them punished in any way bothers the crap out of me.

Whether you love Marc Webb's Spider-Man films or not or you prefer the Raimi's movies, it doesn't matter. I truly believe Gwen Stacy is one of the of not the best female characters in comic book movies. Emma Stone's portrayal of Peter Parker's first love is superb and the character's charm, wit and intelligence makes her all the more memorable. Her chemistry between Peter Parker is magical and believable so when the fateful moment occurs in the movie, things get really tragic and emotional really quick. Anybody who had read the comic 'The night Gwen Stacy died' (or the trailers for the movie) knew Gwen wasn't going to make it out of this one alive but it was the way that it was executed that got to me. From the way Gwen slowly falls to her death, the music or the look at Gwen's watery eyes as she was falling the scene was an emotional rollercoaster. I've never gotten emotional or shed a single during a movie but when Peter started to plead with Gwen to not be dead by saying 'Please! Please!' I couldn't help myself. I choked up a little and my eyes watered up a little. Call but being someone  who has experienced what its like to realize that a person you love is gone forever and isn't going to wake up is one one the worst feelings ever. What makes Gwen's death even more tragic was her family (they lost a father) and now they just lost a loving daughter who had so much ahead of her (she was going to Oxford the day she was killed).
As I sat shocked what actually just happened, I realized that I wasn't angry at Harry Osborn for Gwen's death but felt that it was Peter's decisions that ultimately killed Gwen. If he just kept the promise he made to Gwen's dad and stayed away, she would have still been alive. Spider-Man killed Gwen Stacey.

Emotion Evoked: Sadness

Good editorial, but I'm a bit concerned about your apparent obsession with Edward Norton?

Good stuff. I didn't even like Watchmen all that much when I saw it in theaters, but I still was shocked when Rorschach had to be killed. Just completely devastating.

I sort of agree with RebelVulcan about Rachel Dawes, but I also see your point too Highflyer. As a character, I never really ever got invested in Rachel (the casting change between the two movies didn't help either). But still, the death was a brutal surprise and I was impacted by her death through the other characters, because of what it meant to both Bruce and Harvey Dent.

"Because if we can't protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we'll avenge it."

Basically saying: If the world get's destroyed it's no biggy cause we'll Avenge it.

Well that's no [frick]ing good if everyone's dead, now is it?

I thought Watchmen was average but i was still shocked by the death of Rorshach even though i've read the graphic novel and i knew it was to be expected, but i guess it all amounts to the performance, cinematography and score that amounted to the emotion that was drawn out of those that watched Rorshach die.

Good editorial.

There's several X-men I want avenged but Bryan Singer already waved his magic wand to undo their deaths.
