EDITORIAL: An IMAGE Cinematic Universe Could Be Something Great

Spawn & Co. invading our theaters would bring back nostalgic memories of Image trying to take down "The Big Two". With a Spawn reboot said to be in the works, could we eventually see it happen? Read on for CBM User MrWho's thoughts.

The first Spawn film was absolutely atrocious. Subpar special effects, mediocre villians, or at least villians who appeared so based on how they were presented, & a powerless "superhero" that didn't amount to anything really special. All ingredients for a disaster that the image (no pun) of a film (both solo & franchise wise) may never recover from. That however, isn't going to stop Spawn creator Todd McFarlane from trying to make his greatest creation a household name by returning to the big screen. Everyone should know by now (if they go on entertainment websites) that Todd is hopefully preparing to have Spawn make a "comeback" by scripting a new project he wants to put out. Me personally...I feel Todd should think strongly about following Marvel, & now DC's footsteps as far as linking together his franchise player with other past Image Comic series. I would absolutely love to see the original "Magnificent Seven" (not all seven though) who founded Image Comics come together once again to pull off a possibly entertaining project of great magnitude. I was actually a HUGE fan of what those guys did, & accomplished in the beginning of their self publishing careers. However, due to unfortunate circumstances (most of which were caused by those guys) I had to drop my attention from their monthly series year to year until I finally realized that keeping it focused on "The Big Two" is what truly mattered to me the most.

I still would like to see all my favorite characters from the "former" third biggest comic publisher come to life in movie form. None of these heroes have found great success (other than Spawn) that can be compared to anything the upper level publishers have put out over their longevity. I still think an "Image Cinematic Universe" would be great regardless of how people might feel initially towards something like that. All Todd would need to do is come up with HIS version of an "Iron Man" type epic to kick things off, & see where it takes the rest of the series. I know I might be over simplifying what he needs to do on his end, but all I'm saying is use both Marvel's first film, & even Nolans' style (not a lot though) of what he did to craft his vision of "The Trilogy" as blueprints to guide himself in creating his own story. What's also great about a project like this coming to fruition is the fact that tone wise all their former top characters are on the same level. What I mean by that is as far as being "kid friendly" none of these heroes were ever classified by such a title. So going R rated won't be a problem for any of these guys. So lets go McFarlane, Larsen, Liefeld, & Lee. I want to see a universal crossover series between my favorite Image characters Youngblood, Spawn, Dragon, & "The C.A.T.S.". In case you've noticed me leaving out the other key members of the "magnificent" group I purposely did so, because I was never a fan of their work...so why bother? I also know that Jim Lee has been a DC employee ever since he sold them everything he created for the Image company, but maybe due to the position he currently holds he could work out some sort of deal to have his number one franchise involved.

DC/Warner would never let anything WildStorm based be in another cinematic universe unless the other company paid through the nose.

And to be honest with you, aside from Spawn, WS was the only studio that kept me reading Image.

Savage Dragon was awsome, Pitt, Max. Wild cats and stormwatch are now part of DC/warner, so they are not likely to be used in an Image CU, but they could work it out with Spawn, THe dragón, witchblade and the darkness.

At this point I am done with hoping for a new spawn movie. Todd has been dick teasing this movie forever, and proceeded to change the comic to fit what he wants to do with the movie. By this point I dont even like the concept he is working on. He wants to use Jim as spawn, when they never even got Al right in live action. Nothing wrong with Jim, but al should come first.

One problem with an ICU, is the books themselves never meshed good. They did it on purpose to begin with, to give writers their freedom, but whenever they did do a crossover they never meshed well, imo. Most of their books seemed to take place in totaly different universes until they wanted to do crossovers. If the movies can change that, more power to them.

I would love to see a real witchblade movie, not like the old show. The show was ok but it was cheaply made. Witchblade, Darkness, and Fanthom have really deep worlds that would be beautiful on film, but Im not holding my breath. Im still hoping that Kirkmans success with the walking dead would lead to a Invinsible movie, but once again his world doesnt mesh good with the rest.

Maybe someone will make spawn actually interesting and he won't be sulking in an alley for 2 hours like he did for nearly 150 issues. Spawn as a concept is fantastic and the mythology is extremely interesting, what it needs is a good writer who knows what they're doing. The best issues of spawn are the ones written by people like Grant Morrison, Neil gaiman, Alan Moore etc people who actually have a good idea if how to write story, characters, themes and ideas. Mcfarlane has only written 2 issues of spawn I though where great and that was the billy Kincaid issue and the child abuse issue, everything else is at best meh.

yeah it would be great to see some of these properties adapted for the screen, it could be done, with modest budgets and the dvd market in mind.
I bet they would have a good chance of being profitable.

I must admit I never really thought about it but Savage Dragon has action comedy written all over it! It could be like Hellboy.

I really don't think McFarlane should be making the reboot. He's not a very good writer and has never directed a film. I would feel more comfortable if he gave Spawn to a filmmaker who would finance the film independently.

As for Youngblood, all I can ask is why. Why would any one want to see a movie based on a bunch of rip-off characters who can't smile and can't pose like normal human beings.

@CaptainObvious Why would you want to make anything based off of a rob liefield creation? The only thing rob liefeld has created that is even close to being interesting is cable, and the things that make cable interesting were done by other people who could actually write.

I really, really went it to some kind of weird Spawn fever, after discovering how great Macfarlane comic books really are.
Shame that my collection of Spawn comics was rather small.
And there where no digital comics back in the days.

Anyway the comic made me start to hate the Spawn movie, cartoon was nothing special for me either (it was basically a motion comic, some better things where cut out).

I like the Macfarlane idea, that the story should be new and something original. Not just a copy from first issues, like cartoon. You want Spawn ? go read the comics. You want some good new story set in Spawn universum ? Go watch the movie.
(that is of curse if it ever get made )

The trouble with image comics is that they have so much adult themes in them that they aren't really marketable to a mass audience. Spawn? Gore and Satan (Malebolgia, whatever). Invincible? Super mega epic gore. Perhaps TV shows would work better. It doesn't really take THAT much to make people fly, so I think Invincible might work. Spawn... I don't know. He would require some really good CGI.

Image was always fairly silly. The heroes felt generic compared to the Marvel/DC counterparts.

Get a good Spawn film going and we'll talk.

Have to give credit to Image for spicing up comics in the 90s, at least for a while.
Made a change from the other decades old franchises, ya know.

I just want a standalone Savage Dragon movie. It should be like Hellboy, with the humor of The Tick.

I would love for the Image characters to get their own movies. Image needs to have their cake and eat it too y'know. A Savage Dragon movie would be so kick ass with Tom Hardy for the role. Also Pitt, Shadowhawk, and Youngblood if the right directors are chosen. So far, we know about the Darkness and Bloodstrike getting movies but we have heard nothing so far. Hopefully soon.

Probably not going to happen, but hey, I'm sure Warner Bros is looking to capitalize on another franchise market without Harry Potter. I'd imagine they'd probably tackle another book series vs. this world, simply because of fan base.
