COMICS: Avengers vs X-men #4 Review

The Avengers and the X-men throw-down across the globe.

After last issue managed to show some improvement over the previous two, can Jonathon Hickman continue the upward trend?

This issue picks up with the Avengers and the X-men fighting in various locations across the globe, while Hope looks for help in an unexpected place.

This issue feels almost entirely superfluous. The plot inches forward and there isn't even enough solid action to excuse it. The issue briefly flashes across the multiple battles going on, and there is about one page for each battle. With such short cutaways of action, it makes me wonder why Hope's cloaking device was even used as a plot device. What was the point of setting up all these battles if we're not even going to be able to see them. I'm sure that the battles are shown a bit more in tie-in books, but I don't want to spend any more money on this snooze-fest than I already am.

Every character is extremely shallow, and we never once get to see any real motivation out of any of them. These characters are going to war and the book doesn't even try to offer up any character motivation that could force Cyclops or Cap to be acting so severely. When Hulk was beating the hell out of everyone in WWH, I understood why he was acting that crazy, but here characters are just beating the hell of each other for no reason.

The only character that comes across as believable is Wolverine; any moment of goodness in this issue belongs to him.

Overall, this event is extremely shallow and doesn't have enough action to save itself from being both bad and boring.

@TankD I agree. Good looking action at least makes up for the lack of plot or motivation in that book.

@TankD - I agree. Just picked up AvsX:Versus 2 of 6. Not bad. But that's all I would read marvel for, is the fighting. Other than that. Meh.

Good review! The art in this series so far is such a let down! Makes it almost impossible to enjoy!
