COMICS: Marvel Cancels Destroyers and Victor Von Doom Miniseries

Following the mass layoffs at Marvel in October and the cancellation of Iron-Man 2.0 and Alpha Flight Marvel have announced the cancellation of two more titles that were due to be released in the next few months. Hit the jump...

Both Destroyers and the Victor Von Doom miniseries have been cancelled before their release.

It can come as no surprise that amid the atmosphere of cuts at Marvel two more title have been cut, but these were two highly anticipated titles, so that makes this news a little more of a shock.

The Victor Von Doom miniseries was announced back in August and had the creative team of writer Nick Spencer and artist Becky Cloonan behind it, the team that also brought us Secret Avengers. The miniseries was to feature a teenage Doom and would tell his origin story. The reaction to the announcement from writer Nick Spencer on Twitter is below:

I see word is out about VICTOR VON DOOM. Trust me, no one is more bummed about this than I am.

Really proud of the scripts and hope to get to work with@beckycloonan sooner rather than later. #teendoomforevs#teamdoom#DOOM

How ironic the caption 'Doomed to Hell' looks now.

Destroyers a planned five-issue miniseries starring She-Hulk, The Thing, the Beast, Devil Dinosaur and other “monstrous” heroes has also been confirmed to be cancelled - although this was never solicited. Writer Fred Van Lente, who was due to work with artist Kyle Hotz, announced via his Twitter account in response to a question about Destroyers from a fan:

There was no announcement, the book hadn’t been solicited yet, and just wouldn’t have. … The biggest bummer about Destroyers was Kyle Hotz had #1-2 pencilled, and it looked grrrrreat. Ah, well. That’s showbiz for you.

So, these cuts keep coming thick and fast from Marvel, obviously we have to keep this in perspective - they haven't cut anything that's established itself already. But they do seem to be less keen on investing in new ideas; could this affect Marvel in the future.

MARVEL is lacking a comics series like VERTIGO. All comics drawn by EDUARDO RISSO are EYE CANDIES.

Damn shame about the Victor Von Doom series. You could never go wrong with Dr. Doom. But Destroyers I could see getting the chopping block. Not really intrested in that at all.

Didn't even know there was gonna be a DOOM series, would have read it though. The Destroyers looked kinda stupid though.

Destroyers looked like a big silly action fest. I'd have liked that seing as how everything is OH SO SERIOUS in comics nowadays except for Deadpool.

These were a couple of really bad ideas that would have stunk up your local comic book store. I'm glad to see them rightfully aborted.

Hope the cuts were in the form of firing some of these so called "creators" that keep coming up with these lame ideas.

Wasn't really interested in this, but the Devil Dinosaur in the background looks epic.

As long as they don't cancel Iron Fist, Mi 13, Guardians of the Galaxy or Nova I'll be fine!

@jimoakley666 totally agree when they have 1 character with like a dozen books its just too much...i tried to collect spidey(during the clone saga) when i was younger and gave up bc i couldnt afford to follow 8 different series to follow one storyline

IMHO, the Victor Von Doom character is too one-dimensional and shallow to be considered a "first rate villain."

This cancellation can only represent a boon.

It's too bad there are lay offs though.

Maybe they should, instead, trim the fat from the other end. That [frick]ing mouse and his girlfriend haven't done anything worth a shit in a long time.
