This week, the Ultimate Universe unleashes "The Ultimates" #1 by writer Jonathon Hickman and artist Esad Ribic with two possible covers. One might ask why this particular comic needs to be shrouded, but any check of public websites will reveal the one reason: Stan Lee. Stan Lee has apparently signed, at random, several issues that come with a certificate of authenticity. Sources report that it is extremely easy to figure out which ones, due to the certificate and the visible signature through the bag, have the signature. What does that mean for all of us regular comic purchasers? Simply, it means that comic shop owners are likely to be the ones with these valuable comics, leaving the rest of us to simply buy the mag to read or to purchase various copies with no little chance if any of finding a signature. This feels like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, except us kids won't be getting any autographs and only Willy Wonka is profiting from this. The art is only fair, though dynamic at a few points. What are your thoughts?

Marketing. There was a time when a bagged comic meant something special, for everyone (trading card, etc.)

If you know where to look you can press the bag against the comic to see the signature. I have two copies and the bag is see through enough to look for it.

The creative team alone should be enough to sell this comic without any gimmicks, but since it's an Ultimate title, they'd have to include a gold coin in every bag to get me to buy a copy. And I used to love the Ultimate books back before Loeb wiped his ass with them.

Shame on Marvel for stooping to gimmickry, shame on Stan for going along with it. And shame on anyone who buys a copy and supports this kind of behavior.

I GOT ONE! I'm just your regular weekly shopper, the copy my store owner pulled for my subscription service had the signed comic. Neither of us knew at the time why there was a bag.

And to add, didn't notice until I got home and opened it, but you can see the signature and see the COA which is the back cover through the sleeve with enough light.
