Legendary Comics has released the first issue in their new prequel series for Pacific Rim Uprising, and it gives us a bit of insight into how the world has changed since the first film ended.  The six-part series, Pacific Rim Aftermath, is set nine years after the end of the first film and one year before Uprising.

The story follows Jake, son of fallen hero Stacker Pentecost, who is played by John Boyega in the upcoming movie. Jake is on a mission to find out the truth about his father's death, a journey that leads him to become the character he is in Uprising. The comic also introduces Griffin, a Jaeger pilot turned mob enforcer, and the Mech Czar, the iron-fisted leader of the criminal underworld.

Boyega said the following about collaborating with Legendary Comics:

“I’m a huge comics fan, so having the chance to collaborate with the talented artist and writers on this series has been a rewarding one. The art and the storyline are top
notch, expanding upon my character Jake Pentecost in a way that seamlessly connects the dots between the first film and Uprising. There’s action, story, heart and a few big surprises I can’t wait for you to experience.”

Also making an appearing in the comic series is a familiar face, black market organ dealer Hannibal Chau. Chau was played by Ron Perlman in the first Pacific Rim film, but will not be returning for the sequel.

Issue #1 of Pacific Rim Aftermath is available in stores and online today.

@ODanil - He's still wondering what happened to his shoe. But in all seriousness, I don't know if you remember there was a post credit scene in the first one where he dug himself out of the Kaiju.

@Origame - I thought that was a "joke" after credits;

@ODanil - Yeah it was meant as a joke but you can't change the fact he got out of a Kaiju.

I remember back when the first movie came out, there was talk for an animated series.

I'll see this movie the weekend it comes out...along with Tomb Raider(maybe).

Since dude is alive and a fan favorite why is he not back? This sick trend needs to die already.
