JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX: Warner Bros. Gave Todd Phillips Final Cut; Venice Premiere Now Considered A Disaster

Joker: Folie à Deux's terrible weekend continues, with a dismal opening weekend and a new report which points much of the blame at filmmaker Todd Phillips. You can find more details on that right here...

Joker: Folie à Deux has been left with absolutely nothing to smile about this weekend because, as we write this, Deadline believes it will open with $47 million or less in North America.

We'll have a better idea later today but the trade has also shared some fascinating insights into where things went wrong for a sequel to a movie which won Oscars and grossed over $1 billion in 2019.

After arguing that no one who watched Joker wanted a musical sequel, they argue that Warner Bros. Discovery's biggest misstep was premiering the movie at the Venice Film Festival last month. Because of that, Joker: Folie à Deux sat on Rotten Tomatoes for a month with middling reviews, so why showcase a mediocre - or downright bad - movie at such a high-profile event?

"Sources tell me it was all part of Warner Bros. appeasing Phillips," the trade writes, "which is why they allowed him to make this auteur-ish Stephen Sondheim-like feature in the first place. Between the Hangover franchise and Joker, Warner Bros. has reaped $2.5 billion off of Phillips’ fare at the box office. What do you do with a director whose done that much for you? Give him final cut."

Had the movie skipped Venice and been screened earlier this week (as is typically the case with high-profile comic book movies), it may have added a further $10 million to its opening weekend.

It's also revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux wasn't tested before being released and didn't go over budget with that reported $190 million - $200 million spend.

However, at least $50 million of that went to filmmaker Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

In our review of the movie, we concluded by saying, "Lady Gaga shines and Joaquin Phoenix brings more of the same to Joker: Folie à Deux, a wholly unnecessary sequel with no new ideas and nothing to say. It doesn’t work as a movie or a musical. What a waste of $200 million."

Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.

The sequel stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar-winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The movie also features Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

Joker: Folie À Deux is now playing in theaters.

@ProfessorWhy - In case you do not know, the term FOLIE À DEUX is the common term used for a mental health condition effecting two or more people and an apt one for the comic duo of Joker and Harley who are probablythe best known fictional characters that present with the condition of shared delusional disorder (SDD).

"What do you do with a director whose done that much for you?"

Be honest with them about the quality of their movie.

They should have "Batgirl-ed" the movie.

@Forthas - It will forever remain bullshit that Batgirl got shafted.

@asherman93 - I think you are right! It is a stain on Warner Brothers reputation as a company.

@asherman93 - I don't believe WB thought Batgirl was unreleasable when they don't mind releasing absolute dreck like The Flash and Joker 2 which harm the brand much more than a low budget superhero movie.

Well, I must say-- as someone who hated the first movie and thought this one looked equally awful-- this is turning out to be a rather delightful trainwreck.

I don't understand the absolutely VITRIOLIC hate for this movie.

I saw it and thought it was utterly 'meh', just like the first Joker. There were things I liked, things I didn't. It had some positives, many flaws. Performances were great all round. Plot was meandering, dull and ultimately pointless.

I came out of the theatre feeling, well, nothing particularly at all. It was two hours of my life I don't necessarily regret but I'll probably never watch it again.

However, is it the worst cbm movie of all time? Nowhere near. Potentially worst film of all time? If you honestly think that you've obviously never watched a truly bad film. I invite you to indulge to gain real perspective.

@PutinsGooch - Maybe it's not the worst film of all time, but I can't think of a cbm that I would choose to watch Joker 2 over with a gun to my head.

I'll gladly watch Batman & Robin, Catwoman or Madame Webb instead. At least you can have fun with those movies. Madame Webb looks like a well-written piece of entertainment when compared to Joker 2.

Yeah I damn well said it: Madame Webb >>>> Joker; Part Deux.

Phillips copied better movies with the first one, made a mediocre movie with the subtlety of a hammer that somehow got awards attention and was a BO success and though to himself: "I´m an auteur, I´m so talented!"
So, let´s make a sequel even more pretentious (with one of the most pretentious titles ever) and that´s going to be reminded as one of the worst movies of the year.
Congratulations Phillips, you amazing talented man!

@Moriakum - He is going to follow in the time honoured tradition of taking a franchise from the Oscars to the Razzies.

So the user on YT blocked me who said after D&W "doesn't matter, Joker 2 will beat it" and I said yeah, sure, I'll come back when it's released.

Also I'm still glad that I made the decision to stay home and watch Bleach with my hot wings and beer, early to sleep and woke up for Chama Show(ufc), then went for a run with my dog, that old lazy a**, he's older than Gusto and still keeps going.

"What do you do with a director whose done that much for you?"

Make it in the contract that if the director gets final cut, then they should accept the financial responsibility if their film project loses money.

I bet directors would take less risks with large sums of other people's money.

There’s only one positive I can see coming from all this, Gunn’s gonna be pressured to release the first teaser for Superman to wash the bad taste out.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - maybe but apparently marketing is suppose to start in a couple of months anyway so best to just wait till then and get some distance
