SDCC '13: THE PACT'S Caity Lotz Joins ARROW As... Black Canary?

At least according to The Wrap. Even though Katie Cassidy already plays the comic version of the character's alter ego Dinah "Laurel" Lance on the CW show, it seems we'll be getting a completely different incarnation too. Read on for more..

Bit of an odd one this. The Wrap report that Caity Lotz (Mad Men, The Pact, Death Valley) has joined season 2 of Arrow as a character called Dinah Drake, AKA Black Canary..even though we thought we already had a Black Canary in waiting in the lovely form of Katie Cassidy! The site reveal that Lotz will have a recurring role at first, but "is expected to eventually become a series regular, as her character will be groomed as a love interest for Arrow (Stephen Amell)". I stopped watching Arrow after about 4 episodes -- does this take fans of the show by surprise? We know Smallville had a Jimmy Olsen who turned out to be the REAL Jimmy Olsen's brother, so this type of thing obviously isn't unheard of on the CW. What do you guys think of the casting choice? She was very impressive in low budget horror flick The Pact anyway.

so.....wait.....she's playing Dinah Lance's mother while being the exact same age as her daughter....yeah that makes scenes.

Dinah Drake was the original Black Canary and her daughter "Dinah Lance" took over after Drake died.

Honestly I would be okay with this if it's true.

Love Arrow but Cassidy is definitely the worse part for me.

Yeah... I don't know how they're going to make that work. Laurel was the most underdeveloped character on the show so it seems odd to take even more of the spotlight away from her.

I Love how the show's become it's own thing. I WAS however concerned as to how a wimp like Laurel goes from being what she is to the bad-ass known as Black Canary. I had a theory where her sister Sarah survived and was brainwashed by China White's gang and is initially all like an Evil Black Canary, but this is awesome!! We get Black Canary without having to do stupid character twists!

... Okay, I'm gonna give the show the benefit of the doubt, 'cause it's blown me away so far. But... well, I can't help but be a little confused by this. Maybe they felt that the chemistry between Laurel and Oliver was too poor to justify making her the love of his life, so they decided to use the "escape clause" of never actually calling Laurel "Dinah" (expect that once or twice that they totally did). Or hell, maybe the new Dinah will die in season three or whatever, and Laurel will take her place as the Canary.

Either way, I can't wait to see what the show has in store for the next year!

I think they realized what all us viewers knew all along...that Cassidy would be a terrible Black Canary. Even if she was a blonde...

If this move somewhat salvages the chance of Black Canary being done right I'm ok with it. But yeah...I have a feeling Arrow may be taking the first steps towards Smallville craziness...

Well they pulled a switch with Deathstroke. We assumed the guy in the mask to be Slade but wasn't. Doesn't mean Manu won't lose that eye.

It seems that the producers and writers succumb to online pressure. This next season promoted fan favorites to regulars so it would not be surprising if they heard complaints of Katie Cassidy online and just decided to try again.

This is good news I definitely did not want laurel to be black canary she's to much of a drama queen for any little thing she started to tear up. Black Canary is supposed to be a badass female crime fighter not a weak girl who cries about every little thing and a rachel dawes rip off. Even if it goes against the comics this is way better in my opinion.

Ok,dont really like that idea CW, at least if no one seems to like the current Laurel Lance change the actress not add a new whole character, whats DC say about this?

@Firgosaurus, that really doesn't make sense. It's highly unlikely Laurel's mother was ever a vigilante in the past, her husband being a cop. Also, when Arrow showed up, somebody would have mentioned the city had another vigilante over 20 years ago.

Also, if she's playing Laurel's mother in flashbacks, why would she be eyed as a series regular in the future?

@RorMachine, isn't her "power" in the comics martial arts, more often than not? The original Black Canary didn't have a Canary Cry, but was a martial artist for 36 years.

And after the second Black Canary was created in the early 80s, she lost her powers at the start of the Mike Grell Green Arrow series in 1987 and didn't get them back until 2001.

So there's a definite precedent for either incarnation of the character to not have powers and only use martial arts.

Dinah Drake has already appeared on the show. If this pans out, expect Lotz to be playing Laurel's mother in flashback scenes.
