Charlie Cox Talks DAREDEVIL's Return To The MCU And Reveals His Dream Team-Up At Wales Comic Con

Matt Murdock actor Charlie Cox was a guest at Wales Comic Con this past weekend, where he discussed his excitement to reprise his role as the Man Without Fear.

Matt Murdock actor Chalie Cox was a guest at Wales Comic Con recently, where he answered a number of Daredevil-related questions from the panel host and audience.

Perhaps the most interesting development from the panel was the reveal that Cox has his arm in a sling. Hopefully, it's not a serious injury, and it won't affect the shoot schedule for Daredevil: Born Again, although it sounds as if cameras won't start rolling on the revival for quite some time.

Cox opened up the panel by stating that he couldn't go into detail on Born Again but that he was genuinely shocked by the phone call he received from Marvel, informing him that he was coming back.

"I really thought that ship had sailed, I thought it was over and it had been a couple of years [since the Netflix series had ended]. What I didn't know was that there was an embargo on [the character] and the amount of time- I think it was probably two years, the amount of time after the show was canceled before Disney and Marvel could approach us. I didn't know that, so I thought it was over."

"And Vincent, who plays Wilson Fisk, he and I would chat occasionally on the phone, and he said I'm sure they're going to bring us back. And I'd be on the phone like, 'this guy is delusional, he's got to let it go.' And then during COVID, I went out for a walk with my wife and when I got back there was a voicemail and it said 'My name's Michelle, I'm Kevin Feige's assistant, can you give us a call.'"

Cox went on to explain that Feige first told him that they didn't exactly know what they wanted to do with Daredevil but that they'd start with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home and a couple of episodes of She-Hulk.

When the panel turned to the Q&A portion of the event, a fan asked Cox about who he would want to have Daredevil "bounce off of" from past and present MCU heroes.

Cox replied, "I think this whole Marvel Cinematic [Universe], the decade or decade-and-a-half that it's been [around] where it's such a staple of so many people's entertainment consumption- a lot of that I think is a credit to Robert Downey Jr. and the work he did with that character. I almost think of Marvel as the house that Downey built. I was actually catching up on some of the comics and I was reading one from 2020 where Daredevil and Iron Man have a bit of a run-in together and I was thinking, 'That would be very cool.' I don't think that's possible because [Iron Man's] dead, but it's Marvel, who knows..."

Cox also named another deceased MCU Avenger as his personal pick, namedropping Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and referencing their past relationship.

In regards to the comic that Cox is referencing, there are a couple of options to choose from, but one of the biggest developments between Murdock and Stark in 2020 occurred in Daredevil Vol. 6 #22 from Chip Zadarsky where Murdock asks Tony Stark to flex some financial might and help to get rid of some slumlords in Hell's Kitchen.

You can watch Cox's full 27-minute panel below.

Recently, reports revealed that Kevin Feige and his fellow Marvel Studios executives didn't like what they saw on the live-action Daredevil: Born Again TV series, so they brought in Dario Scardapane (The Punisher, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan) to replace Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Covert Affairs, The Enemy Within) as showrunners.

Furthermore, with less than half of the 18-episode order done, Marvel was claimed to be 'Frakensteining' what had wrapped before the actor and writer's strike, reorganizing what was already in the can and intermixing it with fresh material.

It's thought that the show's original 18-episode order could also be in jeopardy, following the creative revamp. Additionally, the overall tone of the show might shift as prior to the creative change, Born Again was also described as a slow-burning, legal procedural.

Moon Knight and Loki season 2 directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are in charge of the remaining 9 (-/+) episodes.

@GhostDog - The greatest Iron man 4 we never got. Downey and Cox in the same scene.

Once the character is firmly established, I can only dream of a legit DareDevil movie. Where there’s no origin, just him w/ the double DD on the chest, kicking but.

The shows great and all, but it’s a slow burn and I feel like a full fledged film could really up the action and the stakes

If they need to crossover with an mcu character every spiderman movie, yeah sure throw in daredevil

but really now that they have the x men and fantastic four we need a Spiderman, Human Torch and ice man team up

I hope this series turns out great.

I'm on the fence though since Disney+'s recent tv offerings have been ass.

By those I mean:

Ms. Marvel
She-Hulk
Moon Knight
Secret Invasion

Echo looks promising from its trailer but trailers can be deceiving.

I wouldn't mind a crossover with Yelena. I also want Yelena in a relationship with Bucky. All the Black Widow lore left on the table, give it to Florence Pugh.

As for DD, bring back Wilson Bethel's Bullseye and I'm pretty much content with whatever they do. I'm just excited for more Daredevil content.

Also big up Charlie for attending Wales comic-con. Dude's a star.

i hope this show is great, its the last thing in the MCU im very much looking forward to

@TheManWithoutFear - think they could indeed quite easily lift all that Black Widow lore over to Yelena. Only thing I don't see work that I do wanna see is a Black Widow/Winter Soldier meeting

Hope they start planting the seeds for a Spidey team-up in the show. Make it clear that Spiderman is now an active hero in Manhattan. You see that Peter is FINALLY a Friendly Neighborhood Webhead since NWH. Which if the suspected plotlines of Born Again are to be believed, they have to make Spidey a known element with Fisk gunning for NY supes. Would be cool if the season ended with an opportunity for DD and Spidey to cross paths, which leads into Spiderman 4

I wouldn't mind a first time team up akin to Daredevil Volume 5 of Soule's run.. In a bid to bring down several of New York's most notable local villains, DD enlists Spider-Man to steal a briefcase collecting all of the villain's information. Its street level stuff and its high time we see Spidey take on some more grounded challenges.

@GhostDog - Spidey won't be in a D+ show, not unless Disney somehow manages to get full rights to him, no way Sony would allow it. As such we would need to wait for a film for DD to encounter Peter.

It is bad enough as is there is heavy restriction to Marvels use of Kingpin due to shared rights issues with Sony. Appearing in a Daredevil related show is one of the carve outs in the deal that allows full use of him without any Sony involvement/consent needed.

@Apophis71 - I wouldn’t have him in the show. I’d have DD in his movies. I’d just have the team up teased in show and lead into film.

@GhostDog - That I want too, very much so and as he was Peter's lawyer in the last Spidey film it is half setup already which is a bonus :D

None McU related, but Cox is absolutely brilliant in the Dublin crime family drama “Kin”. Worth a watch.

I guess Iron Man could be fun, but Daredevil meeting Spider-Man is much higher on my list. And it's far easier to achieve as well. The characters are all right there
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 11/20/2023, 5:47 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Can easily do it in a What if..? episode under 44mins as Disney has full rights to both then...

...make it a two parter of 40mins each would be great, other than that we are probably going to have to wait till SM4 sadly.

Shame that they finally bring him in while the ship is sinking, been a dream to imagine Daredevil, Cap, Thor and the X-men all in the same film, nowadays you know their current "writers" would just waste it.

If the What If? series was more than promo work for other projects, it could be a place to see RDJ & Cox team up in animated form. But no. Can't have Marvel actually giving people real entertainment for their money. If they get your eyes on something they then want you to see their political bullshit and set-ups for some new crap.

We got weeks of multiple articles per day about The Flash flopping, but I guess Josh got word from his Disney Masters to memory-hole The Marvels.

The worst comic book movie box office bomb EVER.

Congrats to the entire cast and crew, and the producers and Disney, for the gigantic Woke turd they shat out into the world. It makes me happy as hell that audiences rejected it. Like they will reject Captain Falcon the movie the same as they rejected Captain Falcon the TV show. Like they rejected She-Hulk. Like they rejected Loki Season 2. Like they rejected Ant-Man 3. Like the rejected Thor 4. Like they rejected The Eternals. Like they even rejected Black Panther 2, which lost money but no one ever talks about that inconvenient truth for "reasons."

But Kevin Feige refuses to learn from all this failure as he's pushing ahead with a race-swapped Sentry and gender-swapped Silver Surfer. So it looks like the lesson will need to be driven further into his big bald head.
