DEADPOOL 3: Is FREE GUY Director Shawn Levy Teasing Taking The Helm Of The Marvel Studios Threequel?

The script for Deadpool 3 is being worked on, but there's no word on a director. However, Free Guy helmer and Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy has shared some very interesting comments on the movie.

Free Guy has been receiving positive reviews from critics (it currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes), so Disney will no doubt want to continue working with director Shawn Levy.

The filmmaker has never worked on a superhero movie, but his credits include Night at the Museum, Real Steel, and Stranger Things. As a result, his name is often suggested for various projects by comic book fans, but could he be the one who helps bring the Merc with the Mouth into the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Talking to Inverse, the director gave an intriguing response about potentially helming Deadpool 3.

"I'm going to mostly skirt that question, which might be an answer," he said. "I'll answer the last part of it, which is: I'm a fan. I'm a fan of Deadpool, like a massive fan. And I'm a fan of the Marvel Universe and the way in which increasingly, individual filmmakers of real note can make and express with their own voice and vision through that franchise behemoth, whether it's what Taika did with Ragnarok, what Eternals is going to be, what James Gunn did with Guardians."

"These are real films that also happen to be Marvel movies," Levy continued. "So, for the right title - because I only raised my hand on stuff where I know what to do with that, and there's a few where I feel I know what to do with that. So we'll see."

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are penning the screenplay for Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds, and it's hard to believe Marvel Studios doesn't at least have someone in mind to direct by now. Levy would arguably be a good fit, and given how well Free Guy reportedly handles its cameos, he might just be the perfect person to bring Wade Wilson into the MCU.

Who would you like to see at the helm of the next Deadpool movie?

The classic non-answer/answer. Welcome to the MCU Mr. Director.

I hope not. I don't totally dislike Shawn Levy but he's got some major major stinkers up his belt. Hes kind of a hit or miss director and after the general reception of deadpool 2 (even though I personally like it more than the first) This movie needs a director who has a higher chance of a very widely accepted movie. Or else the internet is gonna be screaming that "MARVEL STUDIOS RUINED DEADPOOL"

I don't know who you get in there cause apparently Reynolds and levy worked well on free guy but levy doing it? After how the night at the museum movies turned out makes me nervous.

Will still be excited either way though.

@Mrcool210 - You need to put more weight in the fact that Kevin Feige produces and is very hands on in these films.

I guarantee he won't let Deadpool 3 be bad. It will be good and potentially the best of all 3 DP films.

Aside from the Night at the Museum movies Real Steel and his Stranger Things episodes, I don't think I've see anything from Levy yet. But if Reynolds likes working with him, I can see him become the director for Deadpool 3.

Now that I think about it, I kinda just wanna see Deadpool 3 be a Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe (of Fox' X-Men characters). But I'll take anything else too.

@bkmeijer - Something like Exiles AND Suicide Squad where they pick up some characters and kill them on mission.

This character is going to end up twice as annoying in half the time. His presence in the MCU is a hard no for me.

Sounds like Deadpool 3 is a go. Nice.

I’m not sure whether or not I’d want him for it, but I do know that Marvel has made great movies from directors with less than stellar filmographies, so that should be a non-issue.

Terribly worried that Disney will turn Deadpool into a humour fest akin to Ragnarok with lots of childish gags and not much in the way blood and guts, dark humour like we are expecting.

@Spike101 - but.. it's already confirmed it'll be an R-rating? And the first 2 Deadpools were nothing but childish gags lol

@SeanMPC - Unlike Ragnarok, Deadpool played some scenes straight and allowed the emotional stuff feel genuine.

@SeanMPC - By childish I mean aimed at children. But yes let’s hope it’s ok.

@Spike101 - Ragnarok was [frick]ing awesome though.

@SnideCut - each to their own, for me it’s the worst MCU movie. Hela wasn’t at all scary, the turned Thor into a clown, the Grand Master was awful compared to the Collector, Valkyrie well wasn’t Valkyrie and the wasted the Executioner.

@Spike101 -don't forget surtur and the opportunity they had there for a fantastic story.
It's not the worst mcu movie for me but it's definitely down there, and definitely my least favorite Thor film.
Still bums me out sometimes just thinking about how much potential the Thor franchise had and then what we got.

Sometimes I wished feige just went all out because this is the only time we are able to have such stories play out within a shared universe.

@Ace101 - ah yes very good point with Surtur. Honestly I think the best part if all the Thor films for me was the Destroyer probably which they seemed to get spot on.
Ace101
Ace101 - 8/7/2021, 3:39 AM
@Spike101 - it's not that surtur was done terribly or anything it's just he is a character that could have driven an entire/trilogy arc himself and not relegated to a few minutes screen time.
Something that could have run parallel to the infinity saga, where thanos set surtur free and unleashed him on Asgard to keep them occupied and to weaken them so he could claim the stones residing there.

My God! Can we stop calling them “threequels”? It’s a trilogy.

Film. Sequel. Prequel (allowed if it exists). Trilogy. Series.

Is that reasonable?

@CasualFanatic - yes and add sequel trilogy
