DEADPOOL 3 Writer Says Marvel Studios Has Been Very "Hands-Off" During The Threequel's Development

Deadpool 3 writer Rhett Reese has shared his thoughts on working with Marvel Studios, revealing that they've been very hands-off as work on the highly anticipated threequel continues. Check it out...

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, Deadpool 3 was put on hold and many fans believed that would be it for Ryan Reynolds' run as the Merc with the Mouth.

The Deadpool franchise takes place squarely in the X-Men Universe, and is R-Rated, a label none of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have come close to since Iron Man was released in 2008. However, unable to ignore the popularity of this iteration of the character and those all-important box office numbers, Marvel Studios decided to move forward with Deadpool 3.

Initially, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin were tapped to pen the threequel's screenplay. Later, the franchise's original scribes, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, boarded the project alongside Free Guy director Shawn Levy.

Talking to Discussing Film, Rheese opened up on working with Marvel Studios and indicated that the studio has given him and Wernick the created freedom they had on the first two movies.

"It’s almost like putting on a comfy old sweater. Marvel’s really given us the support to maintain the tone and the vision that we have for it," the writer reveals. "They’ve been very hands-off and supportive, but they’ve also let us do what we do. So really, it’s just been fun. We’re mad scientists back in the laboratory again."

"Deadpool is our favorite who will always be the character I think we’re most associated with, and we’re very grateful for being allowed to write him again," Rheese continues. "So it’s a blast. It’s like going back to school again after having summer off. It’s pretty fun."

We're intrigued to see where this movie takes Wade Wilson, especially as common sense says the anti-hero should be pulled into the MCU and start interacting with those characters.

Of course, it's worth pointing out that Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con is just over a week away. With that in mind, it seems fair to say that we'll all lose our sh*t if the threequel is announced next Saturday and titled Deadpool vs. The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Deadpool 3 doesn't have a confirmed release date, but is expected to begin production soon.

Safe to assume this will be something fresh by the time we get it. Looking forward to see him play in the MCU.

Blade, Deadpool, Fantastic 4, Maybe some mutants?

Phase 5 can't come quick enough. 4 has been so so.

@UniqNo - Yeah I'm ready to start seeing the bigger picture. Haven't been too impressed with the parts as of yet.

Never thought Deadpool was the greatest of movies, but enjoyed them nonetheless. Nice to see that Marvel is givng them a free hand to be as crazy as they want, well at least up to this point. We shall really see how far they were allowed to go when the next film comes out.

I get it that different reporters are probably asking them the same questions over and over again, and there's only so much they can say at this point, but feels like every new article about Deadpool 3 is just the writers talking about how much freedom they have been given.

I'm still hoping they adapt Deadpool kills the Marvel Universe for Deadpool 3, but just with the FoX-Men characters.

And even if not, I do wonder what it is gonna be about. All we heard so far is that the writers can do whatever they want, but not whatever that is.

The Deadpool franchise takes place squarely in the X-Men Universe

Anyways, I liked the first Deadpool movie very very much, and felt the character and his shtick had already overstayed their welcome by the second movie, which I barely even remember. Not too keen on seeing Wade in the MCU, but I'm willing to wait and see if this new sandbox can reinvigorate the concept.

Do the Deadpool movies *really* take place "squarely in the X-Men Universe" though?

So far the only hint that they do is a nonsensical cutaway gag in the second movie briefly showing the 1980s/'90s X-Men Apocalypse/Dark Phoenix era team including James McAvoy's Xavier shutting a door, despite the Deadpool movies taking place in the mid-late 2010s by which point it should be the older team including Patrick Stewart's Xavier instead.

Throw in the fact you've got recast versions of Colossus, Juggernaut, and Yukio, and there are multiple instances of Hugh Jackman being confirmed as an actor in that universe (including a magazine cover) and the fact that the X-Mansion doesn't even look like it does in the other movies (the exterior may be the same/similar but the interiors look completely different and we never see anything familiar like the Cerebro room)

I think it's safe to say at this point that a cutaway gag might be just a cutaway gag and not a continuity indicator, and that Deadpool 1&2 firmly take place in their own universe.

I'm kinda hoping the third movie acts as a soft reboot/retcon with Wade having "always" been in the MCU, and with some of the jokes revolving around that - maybe a montage of MCU events but with Deadpool added in in the background to show he was "there all along," maybe a newly filmed shot including a cameo or two from other MCU actors showing underwhelming interactions they've had with Deadpool during past events (I could definitely see something like that with Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, for example), etc. and of course some jokes about it being the third reboot or whatever.

Having said that if they decide to use the multiverse to explain Deadpool getting into the MCU then he's one of the few characters I'd be okay with them introducing in that way, like he's got the teleporter thing anyway and it seems like the kinda thing he'd do. Maybe they could even establish one of his variants within the MCU as a way of loosely setting up the Deadpool Corps, like maybe Kidpool or Lady Deadpool is actually the MCU variant of Deadpool.

@AC1 -
He will be a variant in the MCU who winds up here due to some Multiverse mumbo jumbo. What I want to see is Deadpool popping up in unrelated properties to crack wise to the audience.

there will be a joke from Deadpools about him begging Ant-Man to go up his backside to settle a bet with someone as to whether it would work or not. calling it. he will then make a comment about "The Boys" doing it better anyway.

Yeah there's no way Disney is going to allow that, are you kidding lol!! But one thing I hope for in not only Deadpool but all Marvel movies: please no more post credit scenes. It was amazing, adorable even at the beginning. Now it just feels like a burden.

@Kadara - Lol, are you just ignoring his quotes in the article that Disney IS allowing that? Lol, what an idiot you are.
