DEADPOOL 3 Writers Reveal Marvel Studios Has Been "Incredibly Supportive" Of R-Rated Content

Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have provided an update on the threequel's progress, confirming that Marvel Studios is in full support of the movie's more adult-oriented content...

When it was announced that Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson would make his MCU debut in a third Deadpool movie for Marvel Studios, fans assumed the Merc With a Mouth would be toned down a few notches in order to adapt to that PG-13 world.

We'd later learn that the project was being developed with an R-rating in mind, but there was still a lot of scepticism - after all, how violent/raunchy/sweary was the Disney-owned studio really willing to allow one of their superhero movies to get?

It remains to be seen if Deadpool 3 is able to harness the overall tone and irreverent energy of its predecessors, but Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who have writing credits on the first two films and are now working on the third with director Shawn Levy, have shared a very positive update with Den of Geek.

“It’s a thrill,” Reese said of bringing the character to the MCU. “It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that kind of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage we necessarily saw coming — Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we’re absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we’re trying to.”

As for whether Kevin Feige or any other execs attempted to curtail some of the R-rated content to make the film more family-friendly, it doesn't sound like fans have anything to worry about.

“They’ve been very supportive with regard to that,” Reese added. “Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

The scribes weren't willing to divulge any specific plot details, with Reese joking that the pair are working on the script in a “secret vault under an ocean somewhere”

No release date has been announced for Deadpool 3 yet.

Feige: Lets see some titties! Some boobas. Some jubabooba, laloobas. You know? Some big smashing bangers. Some big hulaboobas, some giant giant tangerines. You know? Show me some of these rockers, some big titty smashers.

Writer: Sure boss.

@FinnishDude - Looks like the people who worked on Bob's Burgers were replaced by them. What we don't know yet is if they are working on the previous script or starting fresh.

It's odd that they seem supportive of R rated content for this, but can't be bothered to make Blade Rated R.

I'm not the kind of person that thinks an R rating makes things better. But there are definitely a few franchises that SHOULD be R. Ironically enough, Deadpool never needed to be R. It only needs it now because the first two were. But a PG-13 vampire movie? I don't know man...

@CorndogBurglar - exactly. Thinking about the sexual and violent nature of vampires, it really doesn't make sense to not go r rated. It's just a downgrade.

@CorndogBurglar - Was it ever confirmed it’s going for PG-13 though? I assumed with Deadpool happening, they may do the same with Blade.

@CorndogBurglar - I think it's a case of "well they already made Deadpool R, and worked great, better not screw with their magic", but they don't necessarily want to take the same approach with other IPs that they haven't touched (in a long time).

@CorndogBurglar - There has literally been no comment whatsoever from feige or anyone involved with the film confirming either way wether it WILK or WILK not be R rated

@CorndogBurglar - Blade is known because of the movies but they weren’t box office smashes. Deadpool is a bigger name and has proven to make money.

@TheSuperMex - Blade doesn't need to be a box office smash. It's an incredibly well known and liked movie series.

@TheCoonII - Has Feige come out and said that Blade specifically would be PG-13? Technically no. But he did say this after Blade was announced:

"I think we target everything we’re doing now for kids and adults. So I think your question is: more adult or R-rated. You know, other than Deadpool, which has already established itself as a certain genre and a certain rating that we’ve already said we would not mess with when we start working with Deadpool – which we have. Other than that, we’ve not ever encountered a story, or a storyline, or a character’s journey that a PG-13 or the tone or the ratings that we’ve been using up to this point has prevented us. We’ve never been held back by it. If we ever are, then certainly there could be a discussion to be had now that there are other outlets like Hulu, like Star. But that just hasn’t been the case yet. We’ve been able to tell all the kinds of stories we’ve wanted to with the tonality and the rating structure that we have now."

So sure, he didn't specifically name Blade. But considering that Blade was already announced and in production when he made this comment, I think its easy to assume that Blade will be PG-13.

Is it really gonna be a Deadpool 3 or is it a reboot of the series that still has Ryan Reynolds playing the part?

@Will44482 - since Reynolds is in it and due to the nature of deadpool, even if it's a reboot I can't see them ignoring the other movies.
