DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Won't Require Viewers To Watch Any Previous MCU Films According To Shawn Levy

Despite a ton of references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the latest Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, director Shawn Levy says the nods to the MCU will be more like easter eggs, not required viewing.

Though Deadpool is set to officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film from Marvel Studios, director Shawn Levy says the film very much stands on its own feet and that moviegoers won't really need to have seen other MCU films or previous Deadpool installments.

That's somewhat surprising as the latest trailer contains references to Ant-Man, the Time Variance Authority, Loki, and several other MCU characters that would have been off-limits back when Fox was a rival for Disney instead of a subsidiary studio.

And according to recent comments from Levy, he's very involved with the construction of the trailers so that the film's marketing doesn't give away too many surprises.

Speaking to the AP News, Levy promised that moviegoers wouldn't need to undertake a ton of prep work to understand the movie.

"I was a good student in school. I'll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies," he stated.

"I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world," he added.

"But I didn't want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research."

Deadpool & Wolverine is the 34th MCU film to date and the third installment in the Deadpool film franchise.

Back at CinemaCon, Levy was asked to comment about those persistent Taylor Swift rumors, which have the pop star playing Lady Deadpool or Dazzler. Levy opted to keep fans guessing with his reply.

The cast of Deadpool & Wolverine features Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, Owen Wilson as Mobius, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, Karam Soni as Dopinder, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Rob Delaney as Peter, Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

Shawn Levy is directing from a script he co-wrote with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in North American theaters on July 26, 2024.

Deadpool & Wolverine Official Synopsis: After some professional disappointments and an ongoing midlife crisis, Wade Wilson now sells used cars. He’s completely hung up his boots until his family, friends, and whole world are threatened.

With everyone he loves at risk, DP teams up with a reluctant Wolverine to fight for their survival and ultimately, their legacy.

I feel like that’s pretty much the case for all of the MCU projects…

You will certainly get more out of it and possibly understand them better if you have seen the preceding material but I think you could still be entertained by itself if you watch something like MoM or The Marvels.

If you then are interested enough to go back and watch WV or Ms Marvel then great!!.

@TheVisionary25 - Yup, it's like the Portal scene in Endgame, sure you get a ton more out of it if you know the characters well that exit the portals and get pumped seeing ones you have an emotional attachment to but if you haven't watched all those prior films you still get the whole cavalry arrives effect with little detriment to the narrative from not knowing their stories prior to it.

Specific to D&W if having no prior emotional attachment to Fox films, binge watching them all prior to going to watch this wouldn't add much if anything to the experience if those characters are little more than background goons in the main.

Like you say however, the reverse can be a big thing as in if someone liked Ms. Marvel and her family dynamic in the film, even if having a meh reaction overall to The Marvels as a whole, they could decide to go check out the show focused on the one character they did like from it that prior to that they opted to skip.

@Apophis71 - yep

Or even if you enjoyed The Marvels and want to know more about Monica or Kamala , you can watch their prior appearances

@marvel72 - Watch a damn explainer YouTube video for that if you want but Deadpool will mostly be jokes and action set pieces like it has always been.

@clintthahamster - Because of the comics, not everyone reads Comics or watches Disney Plus shows.

MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 4/26/2024, 8:43 AM
that.... that doesnt make much sense, like at all. people are going to see this movie cuz 1) its deadpool. 2) its wolvie and 3) its a cameofest and references basically ALL Fox/MCU movies to date.... so the GA who doesnt watch any of the movies or shows is just supposed to know who Azal is, or Alioath or any of the other nods and enjoy it just as much as someone who has watched them all? i call BS
Cleander
Cleander - 4/26/2024, 8:52 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - Alioath or whoever that other person is i'm sure will not be taking too much screen time to need an explanation and even if it is needed I expect Deadpool to make it quite clear to the audience that it isn't important by making a joke about it.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 4/26/2024, 9:18 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - If you watch a film and a character you have never seen before in it appears (who may have decades of history in comics) it isn't a problem even if that character has a long backstory the writers base that character on. So it depends on how a character is used, if their prior stories are not relevant to the story being told you don't normaly need to know them at all, if aspects of their past are important the film should and normaly does include everything you need to know as part of the narrative.

That isn't to say you won't get more out of a film if you do know the characters but that is like saying someone who never heard of GotG couldn't enjoy watching their first film, sure if you read their comics you would get more out of seeing them on the big screen but wasn't required.

An example would be that I would argue it is entirely possible to watch, understand and enjoy Logan as an entirely standalone film however, yes, you would get more out of it if you had prior emotional attachment to the main two characters. That said you couldn't realy create that emotional attachment just by binge watching prior FoxMen films and it wouldn't add much, if anything, to the narrative of the story if you had.

i cant wait to see this movie!! i am hoping it can survive cameo disappointment. there is guaranteed to be someone who has all but been hyped up to appear that wont and also the inevitable blink in their gone major cameo ala Illuminati from dr strange. cameo disappointment sends jackasses into frenzies and they run back to the web review bombing and spreading bad word. all because the movie the rumor mill built up didn't happen the way it was reported for clickbait.

It's funny that a franchise that prided itself on having such an interwoven story now has to assure fans they don't need to watch anything to understand this.
ObserverIO

I think if you're like Encino Man and you've never seen a superhero movie before in your life then the marathon that would benefit the most to prepare for D&W would be this:

1. X-Men: First Class.
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past.
3. Deadpool.
4. Logan.
5. Deadpool 2.

Maybe slip in Blade, Daredevil and Fantastic Four (2005) between 2&3. But once you've got mutants, a superpowered quartet and a couple of superpowered vigilantes won't confuse you. But if you're Encino Man then vampires might confuse you, so if Blade is in it then you might wanna watch Blade first. Maybe the whole trilogy actually, because if Blade is in it then there will surely be a reference to Ryan Reynold's Hannibal King.

But we don't know that Blade is in it, so just the five above will probably do.
You coul even skip First Class too, since DOFP fills you in on mutants in the opening.

That’s an absolute lie. You need to watch all the X films, Deadpool 1 and 2, Avengers movies (to show Loki dying), and Loki tv show to really grasp what this movie is about.
JonC

"You don't have to see any MCU films"... of course he didn't include TV shows... like Loki... or Fox movies if Deadpool plans on doing a lot of pruning in those with Wolverine.
SATW42
SATW42 - 4/26/2024, 11:26 AM
To everyone saying "you meet new characters in film all the time and not know who they are"

Yes, absolutely, but I've now watched two seasons of Loki and the TVA seems to be a pretty important part of this movie, so I'm going to watch the TVA be set up and explained all over again because the assumption is the audience doesn't know them?

It's not even a reach to think we'll be getting that when we've already seen in trailers that Deadpool is getting a whole MCU/TVA education.

So either he's kind of full of shit and trying to sell the movie (which is fine) or he's warning people like us "the whole opening of the movie really isn't for you" which is an interesting strategy.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/26/2024, 11:34 AM
@SATW42 - I mean even Wade wouldn’t know who the TVA is so he would indeed need some sort of explanation most likely.
SATW42
SATW42 - 4/26/2024, 11:49 AM
@TheVisionary25 - yes I understand that, but it's still having a section of the audience go through that again.

There were new characters in the Matrix Reloaded, but we didn't get an explanation of what the Matrix was again for the audience members who might not have seen the first one.
