The Disney/Fox merger saw the rights to both the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises return to Marvel Studios, but so far we've had very few signs that Kevin Feige and co. are putting plans in place for those teams to join The MCU. Madripoor is expected to factor into The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, of course, but it seems Marvel is taking their time with characters who desperately need to be rehabilitated.

Dark Phoenix was a critical and commercial bomb, and it now appears as if The New Mutants will follow suit. With that in mind, it's no great surprise that an X-Men reboot isn't on the way just yet.

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, "a studio source told EW there weren't any current plans for any of the X-Men movies before the pandemic hit. A studio summit held early in 2020 — a preview of sorts with a presentation by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige — didn't even have Deadpool 3 on the official docket."

That doesn't sound overly positive, right?

Well, the site reached out to Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds for comment, and he came back with a tongue in cheek, "I agree with Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola that Marvel films suffer from an alarming lack of Deadpool."

Shortly after the merger took place, we heard that it would be at least five years before the X-Men received the reboot treatment, and that's likely only been delayed by COVID-19. As for the Merc with the Mouth, if Marvel Studios don't act fast, it could be too late for Reynolds to reprise the role...

With the past and recent bombing of Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, my original thoughts that Marvel should have buried these movies and never let them see the light of day are vindicated. It doesn't how much more money it would have cost them to not have whatever little revenue they brought in. The stink these movies are putting on the X-men and Mutants in general are costing the studio way more in the delay of profits to be had by adding on the extra few years to the time needed for letting these properties get clear from minds of the general audience. Marvel should have swept the slate clean and had the clock ticking from the day they acquired the Fox properties.

@Zer0squad - actually the clock would have been ticking from Apocalypse making the possibility of the return of the X-men even sooner.

Personally, the appeal of seeing the X-Men was to see them interact with characters the MCU is unlikely to be focusing on in five years time. I'd rather they just reboot the MCU at this stage, even if it's a soft reboot that just transitions them into a different part of the multiverse where certain dead characters are alive.

@Scarilian - I get your point but disagree, I say let the whole thing play out, then reboot it, even if it’s the X-men’s third time, because the brain trust behind the MCU has been giving us quality stuff to where I couldn’t care less about the X-men. So, when the MCU sucks, hit the reset button. While it’s good, do not touch that dial.
