It Looks Like Channing Tatum Might Stay On As Gambit In The MCU - But Is That What Fans Want?

It's looking more and more likely that Deadpool and Wolverine star Channing Tatum will return as Gambit, but is that something the majority of fans want to see?

Channing Tatum was given the opportunity to take on the role of Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine, after originally missing out on playing the heroic mutant when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox's assets and brought the studio's X-Men franchise to an end.

Tatum made his MCU debut as Remy LeBeau in the Void, joining Elektra, Blade, and X-23 as members of the Resistance Wade Wilson and Logan encountered when they were stranded by Mr. Paradox.

Earlier today, Ryan Reynolds shared a deleted scene from the movie which strongly hinted that Gambit will be making his way to Earth-616 via a "Marvel Sparkle Circle" at some point.

Tatum has spoken about how much he'd love the chance to reprise the role, but is it really something the majority of fans want to see?

This take on Gambit had the comic-accurate costume, powers and accent(?), and Tatum seemed to be having a blast in the role - but the majority of his scenes were played for laughs, and while some greatly enjoyed his turn as the Ragin' Cajun, others seem to feel that Tatum simply isn't the best fit for this character after seeing him in action here.

The MPAA gave the movie an official R-rating for: "Strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references."

“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," reads the new synopsis. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the title roles, Deadpool and Wolverine will see Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Charles Xavier's evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova.

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

Can’t wait until we can move on with new actors in these iconic X-Men roles. As much as I loved seeing Logan again in D&W.

@thedrudo - honestly, channing did a good job. He was a standout in the film. I would be down for a recast though too. Jeremy allen white might be a good get if he can pull off the accent.

@CaptainFlapjaks - he played a caricature of Gambit

@McMurdo - well, i was entertained at least. I expected to hate his gambit honestly but it was better than i expected. As stated, i would rather a recast, but id be open to keeping him on. I doubt he will be mcu gambit and might be kept around as a varient for secret wars before giving us mcu gambit. Under different writers he might surprise, who knows.

@CaptainFlapjaks - Austin Butler was born to play this role

@McMurdo - True. But I feel like they could have him play it more seriously.

But for God's sake they really need to fix the head sock he wears. It needs to come more forward toward his mouth so it covers more of his cheeks. His face looked all puffy in Deadpool and Wolverine, and Gambit should look slim.

@McMurdo - still more entertaining than any of the other performances in the movie

@bobevanz - he would be amazing, especially with his elvis-like voice now. But only if he doesn't play green arrow in dc will i take him as gambit

I know he’s an easy choice, but Austin Butler makes too much sense.

I agree with that.

I have pondered this a lot. I don't like Tatum in the role, but I have not thought of anyone yet who would be a great Gambit.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Tatum again as Gambit since i enjoyed his version of the character in DP & W , hopefully in Secret Wars..

While the accent was a bit exaggerated for comedic effect , he still had the swagger & charm aswell as badassness of the character.

However post SW , I would want a clean slate for the X-Men characters with new actors in the roles hence my pick for the MCU Remy is Austin Butler.

Everything about Channing Tatum and Gambit has always been a meme, and the movie played on that perfectly. I can't see it as anything more than that.

No thanks.

Gambit should be swauve in all ways, not a mumbling chunky doofus like he was in this, marvel can do better then this.

@DaHULK2000 - He was both. If you noticed he was only a "mumbling chunky doofus", when speaking to Deadpool. He spoke to wolverine fine. Every line he had that wasn't immediatly followed by DP, was perfect.

I actually don’t think he fits the character at all.

He wasn’t bad in D&W but I saw his performance more as a parody than the actual character.

But if they bring him back for SW that’s cool.

I just feel bad for Tatum since he really wanted this and tbh he’s did a good job exaggerating the aspects of the character but idk man.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/27/2024, 11:34 PM
@MisterDoctor217 - I look at it the same way I look at Colossus in the Deadpool movies. Colossus is also a parody of himself in those movies. Sure, Colossus is a nice guy with a heart of gold who would do anything for his friends, but they bumped that up to 10 in those movies.

That's how I feel about Gambit in D&W. They took the character of Gambit and over exaggerated almost everything about him.

I have faith in Channing Tatum. If they had him bring the accent back a little so he's easier to understand (make him sound more like the cartoon), and tweaked the headsock so that it covers more of his cheeks, then I think he could do really well as Gambit. And don't make his such a comedy act, of course.

@CorndogBurglar -

Hmm I’ve never seen Colossus in that light but you’re kinda right, they did take those aspects of the character and dialed them up.
The thing is I think it felt more natural with Colossus in those movies methinks. And also the look of the character is very comic accurate so I think it was easier to digest.

While Channing had a very comic accurate costume, I think physically he doesn’t look like the character at all.
He’s not fat by any means but his whole physique is the opposite as to what Gambit has being usually depicted.

But I like Channing and I’m willing to see what he does in a more serious movie 🍿

CorndogBurglar - 8/28/2024, 4:06 PM
@MisterDoctor217 - All I meant by that is in the comics you don't see Colossus preaching to his teammates about how important breakfast is. You aren't going to see him smashed in the back of a taxi drinking a soda. Or eating a bowl of cereal holding a spoon with his giant two fingers.

That's all. They just dialed up the "homeliness" of the character, if that makes sense.
MisterDoctor217
MisterDoctor217 - 8/28/2024, 4:29 PM
@CorndogBurglar -

Yes, I understand what you mean for sure. Heh

I actually liked all those bits about Colossus because it contrasted well with Deadpool lol
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/29/2024, 7:59 AM
@MisterDoctor217 - Oh I loved it too. And it fit in a Deadpool movie. But that's not how I would want Colossus to be in an X-Men movie.
MisterDoctor217
MisterDoctor217 - 8/29/2024, 2:12 PM
@CorndogBurglar -

Yes that’s true, I feel the same about Gambit.
Every character really. When they make the X-Men the characterizations should be more serious heh
kazuma
kazuma - 8/27/2024, 5:23 PM
Yes please. He was great and I'd love to see him in Secret wars. I also want everything to reboot after Secret wars, so I don't expect him to continue after that.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/27/2024, 11:42 PM
@kazuma - I agree. Everything should just be rebooted after Secret Wars. They should still consider the Infinity Saga and all the solo films to have happened. Don't take away the history. But bring back Cap and Iron Man. They can keep homegirl as Black Widow, I'm fine with that. And bring back T'Challa, or age up his son.

Basically, make the MCU whole, since we've never gotten to see that. I need Cap and Iron Man around in the same universe that the X-Men are in.

People keep saying they want an Avengers vs X-Men story, but I don't. At least not with the Avengers characters we have now. Who wants to watch the X-Men fight the Avengers B Team?

Also, an AvX story shouldn't happen for a long time. They need to establish the Avengers and X-Men as friends and allies before they do that. Make it mean something. No one would have wanted Civil War if they hadn't already established a relationship between Steve and Tony, right? So don't do that with the X-Men and Avengers.

….no. It was a fun cameo, let’s just leave it there. This was a DELETED scene.

He’s hilarious, but… not a great actor, IMO.
