Yahoo Movies recently caught up with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, and he weighed in on a number of very interesting topics relating to the Sorcerer Supreme. After talking in detail about why Benedict Cumberbatch was the right man to take on this role, Derrickson was asked just how close Joaquin Phoenix came to landing the part, and it doesn't sound like it was anywhere near as some claimed. "No [we didn’t do costume tests]. There was nobody that really got that close."
Recently, there's been a lot of talk about the Illuminati possibly being formed in Avengers: Infinity War. For those of you unfamiliar with that group, it was a team in the comics made up of some of the Marvel Universe's greatest minds who made some pretty controversial decisions along the way (like deciding to blast The Hulk into outer space, thereby ultimately causing the events of World War Hulk).
"I think I’d like to see that," he teased. "I think that that part of him and his future development becomes very interesting in the comics, but that all falls under the guidelines of Kevin Feige, he’s the Sorcerer Supreme when it comes to the chess board of how these movies fit together."
Finally, asked about whether or not he has any interest in returning for a follow-up to Doctor Strange, Derrickson remained noncommittal for the time being, but seems keen to return to this world should the opportunity end up presenting itself down the line. "I’d be very interested in making [Doctor Strange 2] but we gotta see how this movie does first, you know? Can’t put the cart before the horse. I hope it does well and I hope there’s going to be a ‘Doctor Strange 2’, I certainly want to see that."
