It looks to me like he is holding an american flag that has been snapped off of a flag pole that he is holding in his other hand.

dope manip..not feeling the "S" but its still a great look. Not too far off the new movie color scheme though. I dont know if undies and a new "S" will save this new superman movie (nothing really wrong with it from what's come out so far).
