Here is Some Color Work I Will be Submitting to COMIC Companies!

Please note I DID NOT DRAW these pictures, I just found them already inked and ready to be colored, so well, I colored them.

In a attempt to break into the comic industry, I am currently working on a
COLOR portfolio to send to various comic companies. I have been drawing since I
was in the fourth grade and am now a tattoo artist, but recently I have taken a break from tattooing for a while to purley concentrait on coloring comic pages and splash pages and comic covers. I am a good artist, but could never compare my work to the greats in the industry like Michael Turner,David Finch, Frank Quietly and so fourth, but I have noticed my coloring work getting better and better.

So I thought why not send out my work and roll the dice!

I am currently using a BAMBOO TOUCH and PEN and working through Photoshop Element 7, those are the tools I have right now and will be upgrading shortly.

Now I have several different styles, editors love to see a variety of styles and they also like to see that you can color sequential art, and splash pages and so fourth. My coloring style ranges from, simple, to very detailed..at least I hope.

Remember I did NOT draw or INK any of these pictures, I just COLORED them.

Anyway here is just a taste of what I can do and what I am submitting.

ALL Pictures are WATERMARKED, please don't STEAL THEM!

All I am asking for are you're honest opinions.

Editors: PLEASE DO NOT RESIZE THESE PICTURES I WANT TO SO OFF THE DETAIL.

Also note that these coloring need some tweaking, I already know that..I need
to know if I'm heading in a GOOD direction with my coloring, or do I suck? LOL

Here are some of my SIMPLE, SEQUENTIAL colorings.
These first four pictures are from
the Dark Horse Comic Usagi Yojimbo,

Drawn by Stan Sakai
Colored by Jake Cromer (peterparker420/ME)

Next up is a THREE page spread of Wolverine: Origins

Drawn by Mike Deodato jr
Colored by Jake Cromer (me)

Next up is a slightly different style.
This is also from a Wolverine: Origins comic

Drawn by Mike Deodato jr
Colored by Jake Cromer (me)

The next TWO coloring are by far my own personal favorites

The first one is a SOLO shot of Magneto. I need suggestions as to how
to color the backround. I was thinking space.

Drawn by Humberto Ramos
Colored by Jake Cromer

Finally, last but not least is the latest one I just finished.

Art by Joe Madureira
Colored by Jake Cromer

well there you have it some of my color work I hope you all like them!

MULTI- Thanks man! I think I'm going to send out 20
pieces of work altogether, that should be enough.

also thanks for letting me know that I always
thought editors resized pics if they were to big
well, know I know that they do not! LOL

thanks again man!

Great work dude! Only thing i would maybe change would be the background colours and the vibrancy of things . The backgrounds are just as bright as the characters and it's kind of confusing to the eyes. You need the characters to pop, right now they seem to be one with the background. I would maybe dull things down a bit. And same goes with how vibrant everything is. If you brought the saturation of everything down a tad i think it'd be easier for the eyes to understand the image. It looks like you know what your doing though. Just my perspective on things. The ninja turtles one is badass btw.

I went through three years of schooling in Computer Animation and digital arts. Just so you know, i'm not a random "know it all" telling you what to fix. heh heh

Anyways, good luck man! I hope things pan out for you.

RedFury@ has excellent points and very constructive
critism! I couldn't have said it better myself
and I also have a degree in commercial art!

Ya want your backgrounds toned-down a little to
emphasize the main foreground subjects, Jake!

Your coloring techniques are awesome, though!
I'm still learning to use Photoshop, myself!

Good stuff and GOOD LUCK!!!!

Good God, this is amazing work here PETE!!! :D I love the way that you've gone for slightly brighter colours which really make the characters pop off the page! It's clear to see from the first four pages that you're really well suited to that sort of book while your last two look just as brilliant! As for the Wolverine: Origins pages, I think they're all excellent and you've done a fantastic job of bringing excitement and colour to an artist who's work is normally very dark! 10/10. AWESOME!!!

'Nuff said. :)

Oh, by the way - you might be interested to know that I should have an interview with Civil War colourist, Morry Hollowell on the way! For now, check out my Jonathan Maberry one on the main page if you get chance!

RedFury- THANK YOU for you're very honest oppinion, I
will take that into consideration!

DDD- Thanks! I will try those ideas out.

LEEE- NO YOU DA MAN!! I hope I get picked up right
away! even I do non popular stuff, I mean you
gotta start somewhere right!? Anyway thanks man!
YA I'm going to do 20 all together..so far I have
10. almost there!

JOSH- THANKS MAN!! Ya for the ORIGINS ones I wanted to do the opposite of what the normal artist does, the
first four I wanted to go really bright for a cartoony type of book, As for the last two..Magneto to seemed like a end page or a comic cover so I wanted to go really detailed..for the TMNT one I really wanted to get those characters off the page! But I have to say on the TMNT one the backround might be a little to distracting.

thanks for the comments guys..keep um coming!

Pete@

although magneto's cape is very good (im liking the purple) im more impressed by the coloring on the abdomen muscles and helmet. light reflection is something i'll probably never understand as far as the mechanics of how to draw it correctly but you seem to have nailed it.

keep us posted man! like i said, would love to able to pick something of yours up at a shop one day.

Man, you are a quick learner!
You took good suggestions about
toning down backgrounds and put it
to awesome use!

Even if you're doing brightly lit
colors you still want to keep the
backgrounds kind of monochrome or
more toned down than the foregrounds!

The new TMNT job just jumps off the page!

Way to go! If you take that excellent
positive attitude of being open to
constructive criticism to the comic
companies you can't help but make an
excellent impression!
peterparker420
peterparker420 - 6/11/2010, 8:42 AM
DDD- YES, I agree that NEW turtles on looks WAY better
thanks to all the suggestions..I have to be able
to take suggestions..or I would get nowhere in
this industry! LOL.

I hope all the editors take notice of my positive
attitude! I'm not one of those people who doesn't
listen..once people started sayin that the backrounds were t bright..I though..let me try toning
the colors down fro the backround..and WOW it looks
WAY better! I think an artist has to take what people say about there work and put that advice to good use!

THANKS again bud for checking back..I am already working on another coloring! I will update this article soon with more work!
