Rant on People Who Make Assumptions About Comics

People need to stop being so ignorant when it comes to comics.

For those of you who aren't familiar with me, which may well be most of you, I frequently post articles in the fan fic section of CBM, most of which are on my favorite comic book character, the Punisher. But I'm not here so I can promote myself. No, no, I'm here to discuss a different matter.
Let me tell you a little story. While trying to get my brother to read some of my fan fic articles, he said no. I asked him why he denied me of this and his explanation was simple:
"It's about comic books."
I asked him why that mattered and he said something that led to my being here typing this article:
"Comic books are stupid."
Let me say, the closest thing my brother has read to a comic book is Marmaduke in the newspaper. For example, he believes that graphic novels are paperback books with sex in them which goes to show that he knows nothing about comic books.
Comic books are stupid? Yeah, just look at V for Vendetta, what a piece of shit that was, Watchmen, what a waste of time, and The Death of Superman, wasn't that just garbage? I'm being sarcastic, in case you didn't get it. Now yes I will admit that some comic books are terrible. But that is not the fault of it being a comic book, that is the fault of either the author alone or perhaps the company, which is much more rare. It took some doing, but I finally managed to figure out where my brother's "knowledge" came from:
Seeing bad Comic Book Movies.
And I guess that's where the main basis of comic book haters' opinions come from, seeing bad adaptations of comic books (Jonah Hex). But that is the thing that is so wrong about their views. They are merely adaptations, simply a group of people trying to take the best stuff out of a comic book and translate it to the big screen. They are not the comic books themselves. And, unless someone makes an absolute word for word adaptation of a graphic novel, which I find highly unlikely, that's what they always will be, adaptations. So I guess, in an appropriate reversal of a popular phrase, don't hate the game, hate the player.
So, in conclusion, while I don't mean to attack people's right of free speech (God bless America), I call for a stand against these ignorant people to be familiar with the source material before they judge them as bad, stupid, or otherwise. Hell, who knows? Maybe comic books will gain a couple more fans out of it.

Excelsior!

down by me its more of an issue of how you balance your time then if you read comics or not like with me no one really cares that i read comics and make up characters in my free time because i balance it out with friends, a girlfriend and sports. However, i hate how some of my friends talk about how stupid comics are despite having never picked one up themselves.

Most comic books are written poorly. Compared to actual literature, they are horribly written! Newspaper articles offer more intellectually. Story telling in comics can be hit or miss (mostly miss). It's the rare gem here and there that make reading comics passable for me (been pretty disappointed lately). Don't take this the wrong way, but when I read for pleasure, I want a story that doesn't require full disbelief of reality or at least makes some reasonable sense. The JLA series is pretty good

Comics in the modern age only appeal to a fairly small slice of the population. The difference between Comics and Music/Movies is that everybody likes some of the latter two.

From what I've gathered. Most people just are lazy and don't like to read. If they have to actually put in effort, then it's stupid. "Why would I read that? I'll just wait for the movie."

Nice article bro. People assume only nerds who still live with their parents in their basement and have never been laid like comics. That is nothing more than a stereo type. I have met so many different people who love comics. I grew up with my father in and out of my life, while my mother worked and went to college. My mom did what she could to teach me how to be a young man with values but a woman can only do so much. I learned so much from comics as a kid. I learned from Batman comics how to be selfless and do the right thing, put others before myself and never let tragedy break me down. I learned from the character Wolverine, my all time fav, to never back down from a fight and always stand up for myself. To others comics may be just art or kis stuff, but to many of us it is a teaching tool. It teaches us right from wrong and that there are gray areas. These characters are role models. Anyone who thinks different is simply narrow-minded. Their are life lessons once you get past the bright colors, super powers, costumes, and names. X-Men is another great example, never judge by looks and accept others for who they are. I am damn proud to be a comic book fan, and anyone who knows me knows that. I am a comic book fan and I will be in the after life. We may not all know each other, meet each other, or even like each other, but we are a family, and I am damn proud to call you all my brothers and sisters. And i will always defend my family. We are living proof that any gender, race, religion, sexuality, political party, social status can coexist. It may not always be so roses but we get past that because we all have a common bond.

Personally i love reading comics because of the artwork & the writing, Joe MAD & Ed McGinnes are my favorite artist. as far as the writing is concerned it depends on who's writing it that makes it good. But to me theres nothing wrong with reading comics , its like an escape from reality for a few minutes like going to the movies. Besides everyone is entitled to have alittle down.
