Let me start off by saying I am a huge fan of the Christopher Nolan series. He showed us a realistic take on the caped crusaders story and gave us a grounded interpretation of some of batman's greatest villains.
A quick recap:
Batman Begins(My personal favorite) explored Batman's origin in elaborate detail. Explaining why Batman is the way he is and how he came to be. It also elaborated in his tech and almost every gadget he has at his expense. (Batman meets the last samurai)
The Dark Knight gave us a batman a little more experienced and confident in his cause. And introduced Batman's greatest rogue, The joker. The most chilling line to me in this movie was "This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets and immovable object. I think you and I are destined to do this forever" In the comics, the joker has been the devil on batman's shoulder. Antagonizing him, and Encouraging him to kill him. Which would be the ultimate joker, causing Batman to break his rule and loose himself. (Batman meets Law & Order)
The Dark Knight Rises showed the fall of batman and rise of batman. Introducing Bane, A real physical and mental threat. With Gotham completely taken over by the League of shadows, Batman must overcome the wear and tear of being Batman and his initial defeat to take back his city. A terrific conclusion to the trilogy. (Batman meets Die hard 3)
As much as I love the Nolan trilogy, It was kind of bland to me that every movie featured Batman protecting Gotham from being destroyed. I still feel that they weren't the Batman films that i have been waiting for. Still breathe taking in its story, not what i have been waiting for.
I was watching Watchmen and Hell boy 2 for the first time, I couldn't help but fantasize a batman movie made in this style. Rorschach's grapple gun(without explanation on how it works) which he uses to get into the comedians apartment, His detective work, and mental narrative reminded me of batman. Especially the how close each characters power and/or costume resembled the justice league. The grittiness of this world, although far from grounded, was interpreted to me in a way i would love to see Batman. A world where Killer croc is dwelling in the sewers, A world Where Clayface is an employed character actor, a world where Bane is waiting his escape in the prison yard of santa prisca, and where Dr. Victor fries is trying to find a way to cure his wife in a chriogenic sleep. Hell boy also teased this world to me. I thought, These aren't Batman characters but wouldn't it be something if they were? The affects in Hell boy 2 reminded me of the poison ivy we want to see.(when the giant squid thing is killed, its blood becomes a garden)
This world very similar in tone to watchmen. I would have liked to have included a fan cast but to be honest, i have no idea who could properly fill the roll of Batman in a world like this. My favorite interpretation will always be that of Kevin Conroy, especially the Arkham games.
I know I am not alone with this stylized vision for Batman. The grounded reality has been done. Now lets get the super natural aspect back into the picture. We already know how Batman came to be and what he'd be like in our world. Now we need a batman who protects Gotham city from the scum of the earth, and his biggest battles being that of villains who have their own personal agenda, that of which may come with the cost of life, and not just the entire city of Gotham as if every Batman Villain is just a glorified terrorist.
Again I love the Christopher Nolan Batman series. I am in no way bashing it, But its time to move on and in a completely different direction
