What I'd Like in a Sandman Movie

What I'd Like in a Sandman Movie

Since a Sandman movie is more than likely going to happen (according to Neil Gaiman anyway), I thought I'd outline the story I think would work best.

Neil Gaimans Sandman is probably my favorite comic series. It was the first real "adult" comic i ever picked up..and was far too young to be reading it at the time! But it really made me look at comics in a different way. I mean i had always enjoyed Spiderman and The X Men and such, but this made me realise that comics could transcend superhero limitations and appeal to the deeper, darker places in our minds.

I think the movie should obviously start at the beggining and follow the first story arc, Preludes And Nocturnes..the first 8 issues of the comic. The outline of that story is as follows:

The movie should begin in 1916. A coven of wizards attempting to capture and imprison Death, instead conjure her younger brother Dream(The Sandman). After realising ther mistake they decide to leave him in his impenetrable prison. The effect this has on the world is disastrous as those that were sleeping when the dream lord was captured can not wake up.

After 70 years Dream finally manages to escape, and after exacting his revenge on his capters son, he sets about rebuilding the dreamworld which fell to ruin in his absence. But first he needs his Helmet, ruby and pouch of sand which all contain vast ammounts of his power. Finding out that the last person to have his pouch was John Constantine he pays him a visit. Together they retrive the pouch but at great cost to Constantine whos girlfriend had been using the sand (much like heroin) and dies when its taken away from her. Dream does his best to ease her passing.

Next he discovers a demon has his helmet and travels to hell to reclaim it. He finds Lucifer unwilling to give up the demon(choronzon) without a fight so Dream challenges and beats Choronzon in a battle of wills. He leaves hell only after Lucifer vows to destroy him.

To find his ruby he goes to see Scott Free(Mr Miracle). Dream believes one of the Justice Leagues old villains Dr Destiny was the last to have his ruby. Free, along with Jonn Jonzz lead him to a lock up were the JLA keep anything of importance that they confiscate in there battles. Meanwhile Dr Destiny, currently in Arkham asylum, feels the lure of the ruby, which now bends to his will and escapes to "rescue his baby". The relationship between Destiny and the ruby is presented as a sort of Gollum and his precious. The years of using its power have shrivelled his appearance horribly. He gets to the ruby first and unleashes some of its power on Dream who falls..dead so Destiny believes.

Directly after this we see Destiny use the ruby in a diner full of people. He controls ther minds and acts out his sick perverted fantasies using them as the puppets. When he grows tired of this he casually has them murder each other. Eventually Dream catches up to him..but realising that the ruby is linked to Dreams power, Destiny destroys it hoping to in turn destroy the dreamlord. It has the opposite effect, instead returning His full power to him. Despite Destinys horrific acts, Dream simply returns him to Arkham.

The epilogue sees Dream in the park feeding the pidgeons. his big sister Death pays him a visit and he accompanies her on her "rounds".

This description is obviously a very loose version of the story, i just thought id cover the major plot points. Anyway, onto the casting:

I know Johhny Depp gets fan casted in everything! But theres a reason for that, hes damn good. Morpheus(dream) is a VERY diffucult role to play. Theres a certain cruelty and arrogance to him but at the same time hes quite likeable..i think Depp would do that brilliantly.

Keanu Reeves already portrayed John Constantine..quite well surprisingly. But only in that movies altered reality! The comics Constantine a blonde, Englishman. If Reeves wanted to return to the role for continuity it wouldnt bother me ..but i think Clive Owen would be a great, smartass scruffy git Constantine...just lighten up that hair a bit!

Scott Free and Jonn Jonnz both have very small but important parts in this. Shaman already cast John Cusack as Free and im not going to try to better that cos hes perfect..So for Jonnz i reckon Dennis Haybsbert would bring the right amount of gravelly gravitas to the role..just lose the pink shirt dude!

Lucifer is supposed to be very handsome, charming and polite but obviously a vicious bastard too! Cant think of anyone better than Jude Law!

Dr Destiny is one seriously deranged individual, and he looks the part too. Christian Bale? lol, yknow he would actually pull this off, check him out in the machinest..but hes Batman so im gonna go for a bald, heavily prostheticd Steve Busciemi

And finally lovely Death. I have always thought of her as having an upper class English accent. And in the comic shes very playful and happy..most of the time! Anyway Kiera Knightly is perfect i think.

So there you have it. Im not sure if there are many Sandman fans on this site but if there are, let rip!

Baconbaconbaconbaconbaconbacon...I smell BACON!!!! What's in the bag?! Oh, I can't read! Gimmie' what's in the BAG!!! BACON!!!!!

SANDMAN YES!!!! (Movie studios, are you reading this?)

Uh, don't know about Depp (rorschach, you're probably right about the whole bias thing - he is a DAMN fine actor!), but if I could recommend a slight alteration in casting - instead of Ms. Knightly (who does the 'skinny waif' thing brilliantly), have you thought of Chrisitina Ricci for the role of 'Death' instead? I believe she'd be a more complete package - looks and (more importantly) mood (she can do dark and mysterious in DROVES!!!).

PS - LOVE Owen as Constantine!! I wasn't too thrilled with Keanu's rendition...

lol, well the thing about Death is, even though she dresses like a goth and has been adopted by every emo teenager as ther icon, shes actually quite bubbly and fun in the comic! i mean shes certainly the most laid back and down to earth of the Endless..except for Destruction maybe. So thats why i went with Knightly. But Ricci could certainly pull it off either way cos shes great!

I wasny happy with Constantines changes from the comic, but i thought Reeves managed to do a decent job of keeping some of Johns character traits,,he was way too serious though.

Ror - Shaman and I discuss this once on a different thread and I believe we came to the same conclusion: there's too much meat for a movie to truly do this justice. If I may, might I suggest an alternative format? A series/mini-series. Not a sanitized PG-13 'Smallville' WB 'family-friendly' thing, NOOOOOOO - I'm thinking CABLE. Think HBO or AMC (akin to a 'True Blood' or 'Breaking Bad') - something where you can push boundaries without having to worry about censors. Hell, I'm sure SciFi Channel might even be interested in something like this now that 'Galactica' is coming to a close - lord knows, aside from 'Doctor Who' (which isn't even theirs) they put out almost nothing but TOTAL CRAP!!!

This whole idea is getting me all goose-pimplely...

loganoneil - 2/6/2009, 2:12 PM
You and I both know Ricci change from bubbly to dark on a dime - that's why I think she'd be PERFECT for the role...
Shaman
Shaman - 2/6/2009, 2:39 PM
DUDE!!! You had me at "IT'S DIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSTRAAACTING"!!! XP

Oh man if only they'd do it like that but as much as i would love to see this on the big screen, and believe me it's dark enough to succeed highly at the box office, i'd want to watch it every week!!! Meaning that Loganoneil is right in saying that it would be so cool as an ongoing series on HBO!!! Hell they could kick start it at the movies and bring it to TV after :))

As for christina ricci, yes, she's the best incarnation of what "death" would be as the commonly known take on the character. BUT... as for Gayman's take on Death, the more Roar describes her, the more i would rather see Knightly do it. Don't get me wrong guys, i love Ricci but in the DCU, no one is better than Ricci to bring us RAVEN of the TEEN TITANS so i would rather see Ricci as raven. That picture of Kiera is practically DEATH ITSELF!!! Not only is she one of the most beautifull women in the world IMHO, but she's a great actress and well rounded at that. She could bring us every facet of that character superbly. I had her down for "Secret" in my New League article but i'd be happy to see her as death :)

VOTE OWEN FOR CONSTANTINE!!!!!! That guys is exactly what constantine should be. Reeves was okay which means decent but not good enough. Owen would be the best possible pic for that role!!! Jude Law is also an amazing actor and could totally pull off lucifer hands down!

DUDE i just don't have all day to reply to this so i'll have to end it with GODDAMN STELLAR CASTING JOB ROAR!!! That is totally one of the best casting jobs i've seen in a long time. Not only do you choose the best "looking" actors for the roles but they ALL have what it takes to impersonate Gayman's vision of them to a "T".

And i never read any of Gayman's works but i always wanted to. You got me totally on board with you on this one roar!!! Amazing job :))

AND NEVER EVER CHANGE THAT PICTURE OF KIERA DO YOU HEAR ME?!?!?!?! NEVEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it :))

i might get scrutinized for this. But can i recommend Winona Ryder for the part of DEATH. I mean, her in Beetlejuice, i think would be relatively close to the performance needed for death, maybe with a bit more attitude though. Right?
Joslezio85
Joslezio85 - 2/6/2009, 3:06 PM
but i will agree, this is an amazing cast job. you nearly hit every nail right on the head.

Wow, thanks shaman, that is high praise indeed from the casting king! In fairness, this is something i have thought about for a very long time because im such a fan..with the exception of Haysbert who i only thought of writing the article the rest of the actors were in my mind for a long time. But Mr miracle i was always unsure of..but John Cusack just is Scott Free! God i will actually be dissapointed if they make this movie and he isnt in it.

Yeah i agree a hbo series would be better for this..but i think the movie (depending on the success of Death:the high cost of living) is pretty much a go ahead..i think the first arc could be fit into like a 2 n half hr movie..obviously there would be a bit of creative licence, but thats to be expected...anyway thanks for the feedback guys.

first off, shaman never call him 'gayman' lol
second, sandman is also one of my very favorite series and Neil Gaiman is beyond my ability to express his writing skills.

A movie version of this series, if not correctly, could be a masterpeice. My word of advice, stick to the source material and have Gaiman on board for every aspect from casting to directing. Just like Mirrormask, he should be heavily involved.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/8/2009, 12:18 PM
Well hes directing the Death movie, under the watchful eye of Guillermo Del Toro..so hopefully thats a success and he can make Sansman himself..although writers directing movies of ther own work is rarely a good thing..lets hope he changes the trend
realfirstavenger
realfirstavenger - 2/9/2009, 10:49 AM
really? i didnt know there was a death movie?
that is fantastic news
i dont really want him actually directing but i want him to be greatly involved in everything
guillermo del toro, for those that dont know, is one of my all time favorite directors (see Hellboy News)
excellent news

also, some of the casting is off. Johnny Depp, as good as he is should not be Sandman i think. Sandman is not that odd or goofy, which is normally what Depp pulls off. He is epic and strong, powerful and smart. Depp is in so many movies as the title role that I would prefer to not see him as Sandman. Just my own personal feelings.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/9/2009, 11:10 AM
Well he can really pull off just about any role he is given..i spose i was thinking of his performance in sweeney todd..now obviously morpheus is not as wicked or unsympathetic but he has that seriousness to him and depp plays it perfectly. I was also thinking of Daniel Day lewis. I just think it would require an actor with real range and talent.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/9/2009, 3:07 PM
Actually first av, Depp pulls off everything he's given. He's always given goofy or odd roles. And aside from being a murderer, his role in Secret Window had nothing odd nor goofy about him. Lewis would be fine too.

loganoneil - 2/9/2009, 7:39 PM
joslezio - didn't you know? Winona is playing Spock's mom (Amanda Grayson - no relation to Dick...) in the new 'Star Trek' film.

Im not a fan of miss ryder i must say, even though she was pretty good in A Scanner Darkley..but she was a cartoon in that! She does look like Death though, those biog bambi eyes would look good with some goth make up.

Guess who is up for the role of Sexton in the Death movie..Shia bleedin La bouf! ah hes a good actor though, im just sick of seeing him everywere
realfirstavenger
realfirstavenger - 2/10/2009, 2:01 PM
i am a fan of miss ryder, but mostly because i think she is incredibly cute. I think she could do good as death.

As to my comments about Depp, you have to understand that I am an extremely large fan of his and own most of his movies. What I was trying to convey is that with everything he has been in, from Willy Wonka to Sweeney Todd I just dont want the Sandman to be another Johnny Depp movie. I have such a deep love of the Sandman that I would honestly prefer someone unknown who can make me see that this shit is the Sandman and not Mr. Depp. I dont know its just how i feel. but i in no way dislike or think that Depp is a bad actor. He is one of the best and i sincerely hope the rumors of him being the Riddler come true.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/10/2009, 2:17 PM
Yeah Roar, TheBeef is beginning to seem like a regular Samuel L. Jackson. And it's a good point you have there FirstAv, it would suck if this movie only seemed like a "depp" movie instead of what it should be. A "Sandman" movie.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/10/2009, 4:43 PM
'The Beef'?!!! Well, there goes that film! Am I the only one who's getting sick and tired of seeing 'The Beef' in just about everything nowadays (makes me want to go vegan... oh wait a minute, I already am!). PEOPLE, HE'S NOT THAT GOOD!!!!!!!!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/10/2009, 4:59 PM
No, not that good..but he is (or at least can be) quite good. But if he does play Sexton then they are doing a same actor, different character within the DCU thing cos Labouf played Chas in Constantine! ..but i dont think they will care considering about 3 people saw that movie!
Spock
Spock - 2/10/2009, 5:58 PM
Now what about my Mom!!! Just playing, I think this is good stuff Rorschach01.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/10/2009, 7:29 PM
Ror - Hey, I was one of those three (I even PAID to see it in the theater)! Aside from Keanu's stellarly wooden performance, it wasn't HALF bad (granted it strayed EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY from the source material, but it DID have the alway delish Rachael Weisz in it). Of course, hats off to Peter Stormare in his performance of Satan ('Son of Perdition', 'Little Horn', 'Most Unclean'...). It was a bit part, but it TOTALLY made the film! I'd love to see him in more films (brilliant actor). His talent was wasted on those stupid VW commercials (FUNNY, but stupid...).
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/10/2009, 8:05 PM
yeah i liked that movie..i had to be dragged to see it though because i was adamant that no version without a blonde English Constantine would work..i was wrong! I even liked Reeves performance..for the most part! And Stormare made a great Satan..who is actually supposed to be the same Satan in the Sandman ..how cool would it be if he reprised the role.

The only thing that really bothered me was that they changed Chaz from a middle aged man to a feckin teenager just so he could be the kid sidekick..and then killed him! Maybe they thought there wernt enough Hellblazer fans out there to give a shit..they were wrong!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/10/2009, 8:20 PM
Some of the MANY reasons why I used the phrase "...strayed EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY from the source material...". I guess the studio was afraid if they'd cater to the fanboys, they'd loose the rest of the market-share (pussies!!!). So much for believing that the general audience could be hip enough to get a TRUE Constantine film (and not some overly watered-down version...)

A Stormare reprisal of the role? I'd be all for that!
realfirstavenger
realfirstavenger - 2/10/2009, 10:50 PM
i liked constantine
wasnt the greatest movie ever but was entertaining and had some great visuals
plus almost everyone besides Reeves I thought had great performances
i also love any movie with religious aspects (not religious movies but movies involving mystical battles between angels and what not. check out a cool movie called Gabriel, great film)

back to sandman, if they pull this off it will go down in the history books. there is so much source materials that a trilogy would be easy to pull off. is anyone reading the new sandman comics, Dream Hunters? Ive only read the first one and have the second waiting for me, but it is nice to read some new Sandman stories.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/11/2009, 10:00 AM
Actually, i never got to see Constantine until a few months ago. My girlfriend told me it was good, bought it for 5$ and we watched it. It was decent. But i didn't like Tilda Swinton as Gabriel nor did i like her in Narnia. She might be a good actress along the lines of Glen Close but i feel that Cate Blanchet would have been better! Either way, i felt that Peter Stormare did a very good performance as Satan, but of all the actors to have portrayed Satan, maybe i'm biased but who cares, i feel that Viggo'd take on him in "The Prophecy" was better!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/11/2009, 10:49 AM
I understand your bias (I loved Viggo's performance in 'The Prophecy' too!), but I think you're comparing apples to oranges here in terms of interpretation. Viggo's imterpretation was dark - subtle, but pure EVIL if you will (the feeling was almost tangible), whereas Stormare went for smarmy black humor (it made you chuckle in an uncomfortable way, but something about the performace made you felt like you needed to shower with a brillo pad afterwards).
Shaman
Shaman - 2/11/2009, 11:39 AM
Dude, how you could brilliantly describe his performance like that is totally beyond my comprehension!!! That is the most "ACCURATE" description of a performance i've ever heard or read in my life. Or you secretly a resurected novelist named Hemingway??? Cause man did you ever hit the nail with that one! I tottaly and utterly agree with you on that. And i haven't read the comics so i never got to see how accurate his rendition was but if that's what they wanted to accomplish in the role, Stormare did it perfectly!!!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/11/2009, 11:46 AM
Thank you, that is indeed high praise, coming from the casting master! "One does what one must with what one has..." (LOL)
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/11/2009, 11:53 AM
haha, yeah that was Stormares Satan in a nutshell. And Viggos Lucifer in the Prophecy was one of the only good things about that movie, the other being Chris Walken. man that could have been such a good movie but they had to ruin it with Hollywood bullshit.

Shaman he was not like that in the comics, hes actually so sposed to be the same Devil from Sandman..but im glad Stormare (or the director) decided to creepy him up a bit..in fairness, if you did have to go to hell with that Satan, it looks like you might at least have a bit of fun!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/11/2009, 12:03 PM
But would you want to in Stormare's hell? His portrayal just screams pedophile/'Jeffrey Dahmer'-esque serial killer. How much 'fun' could one have when THAT guy's running the show?! In many respects, that idea would make me fear the 'Most Unclean' one MORE than the sterotypical 'horns/tail/pitchfork' view of 'Ole Scratch that's popular today ('cause you'd have NO clue what's going on in his head... and you probably wouldn't want to!)
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/11/2009, 12:36 PM
mmmm. good point..now that i think about it the little hand clap he does is quite overly child friendly! ..but i also got a sex drugs n rock n roll vibe off him too, i mean id say he would let you indulge a bit before ramming the pitchfork up your jacksey,,...and in Krazymuthamikes case, Hed be combining the 2! (sorry couldnt resist that one)
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/11/2009, 12:38 PM
I'd rather take the standard 'burn in firey pits' bit ANY DAY!!! And, if Stromare's Satan would be anything like I think he'd be, the 'sex' would be with hideously ugly trolls (or more likely, pissed-off farm animals), the 'drugs' would probably be kayopectate or syrup of ipicak (the drug they give to induce vomiting when one swallows cetain poisons), and the 'rock and roll' would be a never-ending barrage of Billy Ray Cyrus' 'Achy Breaky' fiasco, The Bay-City Rollers, and Barry Gibb's greatest hits (it IS hell after all...)! That's just too frightening!
Shaman
Shaman - 2/11/2009, 1:16 PM

In the 'Will Wheaton' thread, Wheaton said he wanted to say something to Zack Snyder that made me think of this - "If they ask you to make Sandman, please say yes!" The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Ror / Shaman, as you know casting is only half the battle - finding the right director with the perfect vision is also important. So, what do you guys think? Zack Snyder directing 'The Sandman'...
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/22/2009, 11:18 AM
Mmmmm..i liked 300, Dawn of the Dead and im sure im going to love Watchmen..but i dont know, Sandman is a very strange comic and needs to be a very strange movie..i would say that might even be a bigger task than bringing Watchmen to the screen..im not saying Snyder wouldnt do a good job, but someone like Aronofski or del toro would suit it better id say
