What if Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes over as Batman?

My idea for the Dark Knight Rises that has JGL take over as Batman for Bruce Wayne.

So after watching the second trailer I began asking myself what is with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. From what I’ve found is that officially he is John Black a cop who is after Batman and from the set photos he seems to be doing nothing of significance, lots of standing around and chasing a motorcycle here or there but nothing that makes me go “oohhhh now I see why he was casted”. From what I’ve seen it makes me think that he is more of an extra than a actually meaningful character, which by all means might be what he is just some dude. But if I recall correctly Nolan made it seem that JGL was more important than that back when the announced that he was casted. Which got me to thinking what if there is something more there more than what meets the eye going on?

Ok so this is farfetched but whatever I think it makes sense.

After watching the trailers I noticed that Bruce is again behind bars. Now this could be just a flash back to the days in Batman Begins or it could be that once again he is locked up. But how could a stand up citizen like Bruce Wayne get locked up?

Just follow my train of thought for a second. Again this is farfetched and is just me thinking out loud.

Say Bane is in FACT the new leader of the League of Assassins (or Shadows like their called in BB) which means that ever he either forcefully took over after Ra’s “death” in BB or that he was Ra’s right hand man and since Ra’s is “dead” he is now the leader. If he was the right hand man then he probably will know that Bruce is Batman and from the trailer it looks like Wayne Manor gets raided by Banes people. So what if Bane kidnaps and imprisons Bruce to keep him out of the way for his destruction of Gotham and to make sure he is alive to see it happen.
In the trailer we see Bruce in a cell beaten badly and Bane is standing over him saying “When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die.” This makes me think that this indeed takes place in present day and not in flashback to BB.

Ok so here we are right now. Bane’s army has Gotham under siege, Bane has Batman locked up, and Gordon has been hospitalized. And when the people of Gotham need Batman the most he is nowhere to be found. So who will step up and help save Gotham and how?

So we have all seen the trailer with Gordon and who we all think is Bruce talking in the hospital room. Gordon says “We were in this together, and then you were gone. And now there's evil rising. The Batman has to come back.” Then Bruce says “ What if he doesn't exist any more?” then Gordon replies “He must... he must... “
But what if that isn’t Bruce at all what if the is John Blake. And for all those people who will say that is clearly the voice of Bale, remember it is just a trailer and how many times have a trailer shown one thing happen but in the movie that same scene happens totally different.
So Gordon tells Blake that Batman must return. And then tells him that batman is Bruce Wayne (come on Gordon has to know by now, he’s not that stupid) and since Bruce has been captured there has to be a new batman. Then JGL goes to the now vacant Wayne Manor finds the Batcave and puts on the cape and cowl until the return of Bruce. And at least in the comics it wouldn’t be the first time someone has taken over as Batman because Bruce couldn’t be batman anymore either due to injury or being “dead”.

Sure it’s a farfetched idea but it fits with the “Rise” theme. Bane RISES to power, JGL RISES as Batman, then Bruce Wayne reRISES as Batman to defeat Bane.

Again I know it’s a stretch but it could happen.

yes you hear bruce's voice but doesn't mean he's in the room. many trailers make it look like the convo happens that way but in final cut it is in two different scenes and the audio levels doesn't seem to match. and as for him jumping out a window yes he does, but it doesnt show him turn from gordon and then jump the window. just shows bruce jumping out a window. again movie magic could have it happen in any order.

but again its a far fetched thought. and who knows whats going to happen... for all we know batman could team up with bane and say "F*** Gotham lets blew it to hell" lol

Good article! I don't know if you are right nut I too believe John Blake has a greater role to play. I don't think he'll end up someone else entirely, but he's going to be more than just a minor character.

Not even close.. First of all, jgl will never be batman, as in never, he doesnt fit the role and doesnt have the right firgure or build to be batman, it will totally looked stupid for him wearing a mask, jgl will not fit as batman period.. Secondly, the hospital scene where batman says what if he never returns, bruce is implying that he will retire and cant lead gotham anymore maybe bcoz he was beat up or something.. It wasnt jgl period.. Jgl will either be robin or just plain john blake.. Doning the batsuit to replace bruce is ridiculous... Bruce trained for years to be batman, trained in the league of shadows in order to harness his skills, so why is it a cop or a guy like him will just come out of nowhere And be batman, sorry but this article is kind of wasted :)

crazy thought: Blake is Rachel's brother, who Bruce knew of but never met. Blake blames Batman for his sister's death. he tries to kill Batman, Bruce confides in him who he really is and tells Blake how much Rachel's death hurt him too. Blake forgives Bruce and helps him take down Bane (all while being a cop. no cape and tights.).

i'm not sure you've made it clear how "farfetched" this idea is...

oh wait, i just found the fourth one. you're good

Ya I made sure to remind ppl how "farfetched" this idea was that way I wouldn't get the morans go off on me and saying stuff like "not even close" or "that would never happen" but I forget that there are ppl who comment on articles who have an "in" on what unreleased movies will be about.

Again I can't stress enough for the ppl who missed it this is a farfetched idea lol.

@rundtc that's actually a great possibility.

I have another theory related to JGL. I dont think it is feasible that he could take over as Batman. He simply does not have the fighting skills, the Ninja abilities and the general smarts that Batman does have. I think if anything, he is Robin. Albeit a more clever, cluey Robin who may have lost friends, family in the Stadium blast. This brings me to a theory about all the Tumblers that are everywhere, a dickhead i once knew came up with this theory, and for me, it stands up. In the Dark Knight, the guy who discovers the plans to the Tumbler and attempts to blackmail Fox (his name was Coleman Rees)and gets laughed out for it, What if he has re-considered his approach, and taken his information to Bane in the hope of finally profiting from it? Telling Bane of the Weapons Wayne has, would fit PERFECTLY with a villain who is said to NOT exist in this movie, but who knows yet-The Riddler. Bear with me a second, the Riddler is ALL About knowledge equals power, he is all about Information being a person's Undoing. And to top it off, in a Scene from the Dark Knight, Coleman Rees is directly adressed in the attempted assasination scene in Gordon's car as "Mr Rees" ....Mysteries? He is in the perfect position to do it, and Nolan wouldnt play the Riddler like Frank Gorshin was, he would be a smart opportunist, who knows who to take information to, and may be rewarded for it by Bane in the process, hence the new assault on the newly Re-built Wayne Manor.

Again, just thinking out loud myself, please no fanboy assaults and attempts to bring people down so you can feel better about yourself.

Maybe because I dont like anyone taking the mantle of batman, especially if it doesnt fit them.. Again I said sorry on my post... Anyway, yeah @ jawface, jgl doesnt have any fighting skills so it is really impossible.. I just dont like the idea of him being a batman lol!!

@Jawface: Why do you take certain things that Nolan says as complete lies? At what point did you decide Nolan fibs to catch people off guard later? Give me a couple instances when he has done that in the past. I think the reason why people harass you and try to bring you down is because Nolan has said he wouldn't use Robin, and he and Bale have expressed displeasure of portraying Robin. You seem to be going against Nolans word for no other reason but your fanboy dreams. This message is not meant to offend you, by the way.

P.S. No fanboy on here assaults you. Assault is only a physical attack. People probably harass you. Harassment is a verbal attack. Saying somebody assaulted you is much bigger of a claim than saying somebody harassed you.

JGL as Batman. This is too far-fetched. There's a better and more plaussabe explanation for every one of ur points. Use Occom's Razor, my friend...

First of all, its not really YOUR idea, this has been a rumor for a while.

second, no way. John Blake plays a cop.

He's not going to be Batman, Robin, Joker, or Riddler.

I don't understand why people can't accept that he's just a cop, possibly working for the League of Shadows. Why is that such a hard pill to swallow? Why does he have to turn out to be a supervillain/hero?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 12/21/2011, 8:56 AM
@ jawface

what Golden said. Although I'll add something else to it. Nolan also said Riddler will be used. So you can add that to the things that Nolan is probably lying about too, lol.

Also you said this "Telling Bane of the Weapons Wayne has, would fit PERFECTLY with a villain who is said to NOT exist in this movie, but who knows yet-The Riddler."

that actually doesn't fit with the Riddler. This actually isn't such a bad idea, but why does Reese have to be the Riddler to do that? What about that screams riddles to you? if he were the Riddler, he would make himself known by committing crimes of his own, and then leaving riddles at the scene. not by giving tumbler plans to Bane behind the scenes.
