If you haven't seen the "Self Control" episode of AGENTS OF SHIELD please do so. Also...SPOILERS, I guess.
In the earlier aired episode "Wake Up", Holden Radcliffe confesses to LMD Melinda May that, though his recent actions appear malicious, he truly doesn't wish Coulson and his team any harm. In fact, he has created The Framework as a way of not only giving each of its inhabitants the type of life that they (arguably) truly want and deserve, it also serves as a way of cheating death. It is to be assumed then that AIDA also upholds this belief/mission and used it as a guiding line while sculpting the slightly altered Framework lives of the recently captured Mace, Coulson, Mack, and Fitz.
At one point in the "Self Control" episode, AIDA mentions to Radcliffe that she had to make some adjustments to The Framework to accommodate the new subjects - something that made such notable changes to the reality of The Framework that Radcliffe commented on it when he was momentarily ejected him from the program. So, armed with these few facts, it then becomes of issue of I.D' ing possible life defining decisions & regrets in each agent's life and speculating wildy as to how these changes lead to the "new" lives we see hinted at in the closing montage of the "Self Control" episode. Here are some of my wild speculations theories.
Why does Phil Coulson appear to be a highschool teacher instead of being in a relationship with Melinda May?
Coulson's life altering regret appears to be deciding to become a SHIELD agent in the first place. And if that's the case, and AIDA/The Framework took him back to that moment in his life and let things play out naturally, then the moment when he is approached by representatives of SHIELD to join their agency, he turns them down. As a result, he continues studying history in college, never meets Melinda or Nick Fury, lives a normal life of as a teacher/professor, and most likely falls in love with someone else (maybe The Cellist? or Rosalind Price?).
Some people seem to think he becomes an anti-Inhuman bigot because of the "Inhumans: Why We Fear Them" message on the chalkboard. But I think it's a pseudo-inflammatory headline meant for a pro-Inhumans lecture...the title is just meant to get his students' attention.
How in the hell does a die hard SHIELD agent like Melinda May end up working for HYDRA?
I have two theories about this scene. My first theory is that Melinda's career as a SHIELD agent took a course relatively similar to Coulson's (i.e. acted as Fury's right hand woman, put together her own AOS team...maybe even "died" fighting Loki), but eventually went down a very different path without the influence of Coulson in her life. So that means that (just like Coulson) Melinda not only worked closely with stand-up agents like Nick Fury and Maria Hill, she also worked closely with turncoats like Jasper Sitwell and John Garrett. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine that an exceptionally talented agent such as Melinda May - who was described as "...fearless, and not afraid to break the rules" early on in her career - would become a high priority target for co-opting in the eyes of HYDRA leaders like Gideon Malick and Alexander Pierce. I think one of the reasons why HYDRA never tried to flip either Phil or Melinda in the "real" world is because of how close the two are and how they kept each other focused on all things SHIELD. So it's possible that, without the presence of Coulson in her life as a SHIELD agent, Melinda became a sleeper HYDRA agent along with so many others and turned on her fellow agents during the events of the HYDRA Uprising.
My second theory is that AIDA views SHIELD and HYDRA as rival organizations with very similar goals: securing world peace. She probably views their vastly differing approaches and seemingly endless conflict as unnecessary problems that would eventually threaten The Framework and built a timeline where the two powers merged at some point to achieve their common goal. To draw out this theory even more, maybe SHIELD is the peacekeeping force and HYDRA is the science/tech division.
So Fitz went from bookish lab guy to rich ladies mans...
While there isn't a wealth of information about Fitz' life prior to becoming an agent of SHIELD, a defining part of his life is his relationship with his father - or lack thereof. In the episode "Hot Potato Soup" we learned that, before abandoning his family, Fitz' father often told his son that he was "..stupid and worthless" and that he was "...not smart enough." (which is kind of hard to wrap your head around when you consider the fact that he was saying this to a child prodigy and certified genius). Taking this into account, I believe Radcliffe and AIDA altered the reality of The Framework so that Fitz' father remained in his son's life (for better or for worse) and that this change pushed Fitz to become a rich, successful, and confident inventor/industrialist type in the same vein as Ian Quinn and Tony Stark. In fact, maybe he runs a version of Cybertek in this reality and that's Raina's hand reaching out of the car...or Debbie. Honestly, though, I think it's Jemma.
...and Simmons is dead?
Nah, that's fake news man. "Yes", there is a headstone with her name on it reading "11 September 1987 - 8 November 2---". But, honestly, that's all there is. In the "real" world, there is an empty grave and headstone with Phil Coulson's name on it. There isn't much to go on as far as where Jemma really is within The Matrix The Framework, but my hope is that she's a bad-ass undercover field agent/scientist in the same mold as Bobbi "Mockingbird" Morse and that she's partnered with her on again/off-again ex-husband Antoine Triplett.
Man, they are going to have one hell of a hard time unplugging Mack from this thing...
Not much to say. I mean, we just found out that Mack had a child that died while she was still very young and now we see him picking up a young girl's bike and carrying it towards the house. I'm guessing AIDA and Radcliffe gave him a good life with all the bells and whistles: a loving family, fulfilling job, a nice home...doesn't have to deal with extinction level events or well funded maniacs every few months. My guess is that he's going to be the hardest to "wake up" from this House of M/ "No More Agents" dreamworld.
He probably doesn't have a shotgun axe though. And he has had sex with Yo-Yo at this point. So, maybe not too hard.
As far as Daisy and Mace...I'm not sure yet. I mean, I know everyone is on the "Hooray! Grant Ward is coming back!" hype train, but I can't understand why Radcliffe would choose Ward when he knows how much Daisy hated Wards guts. It seems to me that her one regret would be meeting him in the first place. I guess AIDA could have made a reality where Ward never betrayed Daisy and the team. But if there's a world where Grant Ward and HYDRA both exist, then Ward is going to betray someone. And as far as Mace, he's probably this world's Captain America.
