Marvel Television Exec Plays Coy When Asked Whether AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Should Be Considered MCU Canon

Marvel Studios' Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum has addressed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s canon status, but largely dodges the question of whether it's part of the Sacred Timeline...

The debate about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s "canon" status continues to rage, especially with conflicting reports and comments about whether the ABC series took place on Earth-616.

Early seasons tied heavily into MCU movies thanks to appearances from characters like Nick Fury and Sif. The show's leads, meanwhile, played a pivotal role (in the background, at least) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

However, as tensions between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television continued to rise, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. became increasingly more standalone felt like a completely separate entity when it ended.

Talking to Screen Rant at D23, Marvel Studios' Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, largely danced around whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should be considered MCU canon.

"I think that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a really great show and there was a long time where some of the best reveals in that show were during the Winter Soldier era where Hydra emerges and you're like, 'Oh my gosh!' I remember that feeling, even knowing what was happening, just being a fan, [going] 'It really is connected!'"

"I think that there is, in a crazy way, like you said, it does feel like it fits into The Multiverse Saga in an incredible way," he added. "I want to go down this road with you, you know I do, but we're just gonna take a deep breath for a second. Just know that I love that cast, I love Clark Gregg and I love that show."

Marvel Television's Netflix TV shows were made canon earlier this year, though it's still thought that Marvel Studios will pick and choose what they want from those, reimagining or recasting characters as they see fit.

For casual fans, Agent Coulson's death was a long time ago and bringing him or anyone from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back now feels like it would serve a very small section of the fanbase; still, anything is possible in the Multiverse Saga.

For Marvel Studios, questions about the canon status of any previous project will soon be a moot point as Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to softly reboot the MCU, making it easier to move on from any problematic continuity issues or characters Kevin Feige and company weren't in charge of.

"[Coulson isn't dead] in every timeline!" the actor said earlier this year when asked about his MCU future. "Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, 'I don't know, there's many Multiverses here...' People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin is [like] The Oz."

As for fans hoping we could see him in Avengers: Secret Wars, Gregg said, "That's really sweet. I just love that there's a connection with Coulson, I think, because he was such an early part of the thing and the kind of human face of the world."

"But the canon of people that they feel that way about has grown and there's plenty...It's hard for me to go, 'Yeah, it's alright, I had 10 great years, maybe 12,' but yes."

I think the answer became clear to me around...errr Age of Ultron?

I started singing about the Multiverse long before this phase began.

Only thing that ever made sense.

Yes, it IS canon...but to the Multiverse.

@Doomsday8888 - yeah I agree.

The fans of this show are massively angry people. They desperately want it to be sacred timeline.

@MadThanos - I'm a fan of the show, but I don't want it in the sacred timeline, too many inconsistencies. But a confirmation that it is part of the multiverse would be cool. Later on would be nice to see the sacred timeline counter parts to some of the characters.

@Urubrodi - dude, I have zero doubts about it being part of the multiverse and a branch that was exactly the same from the sacred timeline. Then after The Avengers it changed.

If you want to go back and check all that, maybe Loki/Endgame validated all of that. Maybe AoS is on the branch that Loki escaped.

Just a reminder they made Elektra multiverse canon. AoS is one of their own.

@Doomsday8888 - How did it become clear around then?

@Doomsday8888 - Strange point for THAT to be when it became clear when it WAS heavily linked in with AoU, a film whose director helped launch the show and whose brother was still running it.

They provided the intel to Maria Hill as to where Loki's staff was after dealing with Strucker on the show, the guy from the Twins ends credit Joss filmed for Winter Soldier set in the Sokovia Hydra base. Plus the Helicarrier refit reveal that was setup prior to AoS was released (whole b plot of what was Coulson upto) even if they didn't show it until just after.

I'd say it only started to be clear it was deviating much was at points after that such as season four and beyond but the easy option is always that they ended up on a branch timeline when they jumped forward in time at the end of season four as nothing else before that deviated enough to break canon.

As is Fitz literaly made a device that enables jumping between timelines and at Marvel EVERYTHING is canon to their multiverse so either way there is a built in way they can show up at any point, double so for Secret Wars itself regardless.

@Apophis71 - If anybody actually ever watched the show, it's crystal clear that Season 1-4 are 616 canon, then from Season 5 when they go to the future & come back, and then it's very obviously a new timeline. Deke even mentions the multiverse when they're in the S5 future, then when they come back, the girl who experiences all time at once even says "Something's different" (episode 22 at 26:39 on Disney+). Just... God, just watch the show! I hate you so much, Josh Wilding!

@seakhan - Yeh, I don't get why the third highest rated ever Marvel show ever (was highest till 2022) has this debate. Giving a show more free reign not setting up directly any films or directly dealing with the fallout of a film doesn't stop it being canon and on the same Earth of the same timeline. The news not reporting on specific events on a specific part of the globe doesn't mean those events don't occur at all IRL so most the arguments don't hold much water.

After season four, crystal clear it was delving into the whole multiverse of diverging timelines stuff so easy to question if they remained on the sacred one and first couple seasons were 100% canon and connected. There CAN be a nuance discussion about if it could or has been retconned that they ended up on a branched timeline somewhere in season three or four but nothing in those two seasons firmly breaks canon at all just cos things in them are not mentioned in a film (there can be two seperate books both with the same name both copying all or parts of the stone carvings on Mnt Wundagore for instance)

@valmic - Peter started to border on the same overdone forced humor as they did by bringing Dopinder back in Deadpool 2. Took something that worked the first time, and got too carried away in bringing the joke back.

He clearly doesn’t want to admit that it is not officially canon (at least on the whole, if at all). But he can’t say so for fear of diminishing the worth of his show. He just wants to claim a piece of The Multiverse Saga to get in on the current rejuvenated relevance.

For me, SHIELD is top tier along with Daredevil and Superman & Lois. The only D+ show that has come close to top tier is Loki, in my opinion.

Also, I just have to ;-P

Canon or not, I'm good either way but it is absolutely necessary to bring my girl Ming-Na Wen back in one form or another. I can never get enough of that woman.

I think they should continue holding off admitting "whether or not" until the time is right. This worked to their advantage regarding the Daredevil series.

If they wanted to bring some of the characters into the MCU fold, I would think this should be uncomplicated as the characters aren't a team anymore, and Kevin can pick and choose what better serves the overall stories.

I'd love to see Daisy and May again.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 8/12/2024, 8:18 AM
@LSHF - The only thing they probably shouldn't do is a new Agents of Shield show, if going down that road use SWORD or some such instead, due to the whole we can't all be in the same room together thing at the end of AoS. However an occassional consult with Fitz/Simmons instead of no-name scientist would be great on occassion as would bringing one or two here or there as support characters when it fits well.

As to Coulson himself, keep him as an LMD and folk don't need to know the how or when of it all if only watched the films to buy into why he is able to appear when he was supposed to be dead, cos he still would be (even if died MANY times not just once).

I have no problems thinking of the show as an extended WHAT IF…? story. That said, I think the show matches up pretty well with the Sacred timeline until around the beginning of Season 5. Before then, the one hard-to-ignore divergence of the show is the existence of Inhumans, who have not figured into the Sacred Timeline movies at all.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 8/12/2024, 8:24 AM
@NoAssemblyReqd - Yup the Inhumans was the only wobble due to the ditched plans for an Inhumans film, but not an overly problematic one ultimately, no different to finding out there has been Vampires all this time but never featured in films till Blade or Namor and his people not features till BP:WF.

@HOTSHOT - It'll just take some creative writing, and it should work.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 8/12/2024, 8:27 AM
@HOTSHOT - It can be worked in easily up until the final episode with SHIELD up and running and the Academy relaunched, easier if soft rebooting anyway to say they ended up on a branch timeline end of season 4 then end up back on the main timeline due to Fitz's device or after the post secret wars fallout.

There’s no way AOS could be canon in the sacred timeline. That would require inhumans to exist and that no Avengers or other heroes were involved in multiple world ending threats. A multiverse connection makes sense though.
seakhan
seakhan - 8/12/2024, 11:59 AM
@elcapitan - There's no way the new BLADE movie could be canon to the sacred timeline. That would require vampires to exist and-- oh, wait.
