Doctor Doom movie written and possibly directed by acclaimed
Fargo and
Legion creator Noah Hawley remains an unbelievably exciting prospect, but with the Disney/Fox merger set to close
next week, the likelihood of the film seeing the light of day under the 20th Century Fox banner is a longshot - at best.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't
ever happen.
In an interview with
The Hollywood Reporter at SXSW earlier this week, Hawley spoke candidly about the project, confirming that it had yet-to-be greenlit by the studio, and also unexpectedly revealed that he recently had a very interesting meeting with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who inquired about his script, "a
re you still working on it?" Hawley replied, "
should I still be working on it?," and the conversation, as far as we know, ended there.
Hawley then noted that he wasn't sure whether the project would still move forward once the merger went through, and joked that Feige wouldn't reveal to him the "
thousand-year plan" for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As for what his script contained, Hawley shared the first plot details and they're intriguing, to say the least. He told THR that he "
envisions Doctor Doom as a geopolitical thriller more than a standard superhero movie. It begins with Doom putting a dome over Latveria, the fictional European country he rules. He later invites a female journalist to be his voice to the world, meaning its protagonist would be someone without superpowers."
