RED SONJA Is Coming To 4K Blu-Ray This Month - Check Out The New Trailer & Steelbook Cover

Fans of '80s sword 'n sorcery adventure, Red Sonja, have been waiting a long time for some kind of re-release of the campy fantasy tale, and a 4K restoration is coming our way on July 18th. Now, Studiocanal UK (via SFFGazette.com) has debuted a brand-new re-release trailer and steelbook cover.

Released back in 1985, Richard Fleischer's Red Sonya was developed as a spin-off of Conan the Barbarian, and even though Arnold Schwarzenegger starred alongside Brigitte Nielsen as the flame-haired warrior of the title, he actually played a completely different character named Kalidor.

At the time, this proved to be a little confusing for Robert E. Howard fans who were hoping to see the legendary Conan join forces with Sonja, but despite being lambasted by critics upon its release, the movie would go on to gain a strong cult following over the years. A reboot is still in development (as far as we know), but we haven't had any updates since original star Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and The Wasp) parted ways with the project.

Check out the trailer below, and let us know if you plan on adding Red Sonja to your Blu-ray collection.

Brigitte Nielsen (Rocky IV, Cobra) stars as the iconic, flame-haired heroine who sets out to avenge the death of her family after being granted extraordinary powers by a mysterious vision, but only if she vows to never fall in love with a man who cannot defeat her in combat. She is tasked to stop the tyrannical Queen Gedren (Sandahl Bergman), who is in possession of a talisman that could destroy the world. On her journey she meets Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is gifted with unusual strength and insists on helping Sonja end the Queen’s reign of terror.

I remember seeing the original film at the theater. I don't remember anything about it expect that Arnold was in it and Brigitte was very hot.

@UniqNo - It's still in the works, but far from filming.

The latest (from Wikepedia):

"In 2017, Millennium Films announced a new Red Sonja movie, with Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta producing along with Cinelou Films' Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon and writing by Ashley Miller.[105][106]

In October 2018, Bryan Singer was confirmed to direct the film.[107] In February 2019, following allegations against Singer of sexual assault, Millennium stated Red Sonja was no longer on their slate of films,[108] and Singer was fired from the production the next month.[109]

On June 21, 2019, three months after Singer was removed as director, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Joey Soloway had been hired to write and direct the film.[110]

On February 26, 2021, the same publication announced that Tasha Huo was selected to write the film.[111]

On May 5, 2021, the same publication announced that Hannah John-Kamen was cast as the titular character.[112]

On June 3, 2021, The Illuminerdi reported that Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Kulan Gath, a character from the Conan the Barbarian Marvel comics and in the Red Sonja Dynamite comics.[113][114]

The movie was scheduled to begin filming in 2022,[115] but in March of that year it was reported that John-Kamen and Soloway had exited the project and M.J. Bassett was hired as director.[116]"

So, it is still being worked on, although I'm having doubts that they will keep Amber Heard as the main character.

@LSHF @GeneralZod - Oh yeah, i forgot about all the Singer stuff. thanks for the info guys.

As much as i'm not a fan of Rose Mc Gowan, she was an interesting choice at the time. She was decent enough in Grindhouse (Planet Terror)

@marvel72 - The first Conan is pretty decent imo. Conan the Destroyer is really terrible and dumb, but has a few good unintentional laughs.
Red Sonja on the other hand, has no redeeming qualities.

@Feralwookiee - After all this, the boat is sinking, not floating. Never watched whatever show they were on but I had forgotten about her and Flava. Okay

@RolandD - I was being sarcastic up there ^, sorry it didn't come off that way.

I'd like to see a new RS movie, but I have no idea how you'd make a cool one (or Conan for that matter) in "today's Hollywood". 😞
