The Illuminerdi reports that the long-delayed Red Sonja movie has hit another bump in the road. Disgraced X-Men director Bryan Singer was once attached to take the helm of the project for Millennium Pictures, but online backlash led to his dismissal and swift return to Hollywood's black list (no great surprise after reports of his poor conduct on Bohemian Rhapsody's set)
Filmmaker Joel Soloway then came on board to direct and serve as co-writer alongside Tasha Huo. Ant-Man and The Wasp star Hannah John-Kamen was cast as Red Sonja's lead, while we even heard rumblings that Sacha Baron Cohen had been offered the role of Kulan Garth.
So, things were coming together nicely. Unfortunately, the site claims that John-Kamen has now dropped out of the movie and the hunt is currently on for a new Red Sonja. As if that isn't bad enough, though, Soloway is also out as director. However, a replacement has already been found in M.J. Bassett; his credits include Solomon Kane, Silent Hill: Revelation, and Inside Man: Most Wanted.
As much potential as this character has on screen, we're not getting a warm, fuzzy feeling about Red Sonja and it feels like it could be heading down B-Movie territory. If a big name star is attached, then we'll know the screenplay is in good shape, but this might end up as a direct-to-DVD project at this rate.
Based on the Dynamite Entertainment comic book franchise, a Red Sonja movie has been in the works at Millennium for close to a decade. We'll keep you updated on this latest effort as we learn more.
