See what Robert E. Howard scholar Patrice Louinet had to say about Conan.

Robert E. Howard scholar Patrice Louinet recently had the opportunity to look at a number of Conan set pictures and to speak with Paradox Entertainment CEO and Conan producer Fredrik Malmberg.

Louinet talked to Fantasy.fr about his visit and some of what he got to see.

Fantasy.fr: Patrice, what can you unveil about the set, the scenery, the costumes you saw on those pictures ?

Patrice Louinet:
You have to understand that there is a lot I am not at liberty to divulge, but among other things I was quite impressed by an oriental scene that had very vivid colors. I got to see several scenes set in Cimmeria and all showed a snow-covered country. When I mentioned to Fredrik that Howard's Cimmeria was supposed to be an overcast, greyish hill country, he was quick to assure me there are "tons of bleak, grey, rainy Cimmerian shots" in the movie, or words to that effect. Just my luck, I only got to see the snow-covered ones! Otherwise, the costumes are very realistic, they don’t look cheap of kitsch.

Fantasy.fr: Did you feel through these pictures that Howard’s masterpiece was shown the respect it was due?

Patrice Louinet:
I have to say that some of the things I saw were positive : Momoa’s Conan seems to me a lot like Howard’s, but I have already said that. Here again, I am only commenting on his looks, I don’t know anything as to his acting capacities. And while I am at it, the only CGI on Momoa will be to change the color of his eyes. I am also happy to report there won’t be any « Wheel of Pain », as in Milius’ movie! From what I saw, you can also expect some frontal nudity. One huge Bulgarian guy playing one of the baddies seems to come right out of a Turanian den.
Fredrik Malmberg told me that Ron Perlman was a longtime fan, who had Leo Howard – who plays young Conan – read the stories. Seems almost everyone is reading Howard on the set. Even Stephen Lang! Malmberg also told me he did insist (and won his case) that Conan’s name should be stressed on the first syllable, the way Howard did, and not like the usual American Co-NAN.By the way, Momoa seems quite taken with his role. I remember a pic taken at lunch time where everybody’s eating but him: he’s training with his sword. It’s of course good news, but how – or even if – that will show on the screen remains to be seen. This being said, I won’t delude myself into thinking this movie is going to be faithful to Howard, not by a long shot. I greatly fear to discover what’s in the final script.

Hawks @ I so was looking forward to CONAN!!!

Now STARGATE BOY is in it, i just can't get excited anymore...

Its a damn shame, waiting sooo many years for this!

I'm pleased to hear the entire cast is reading the actual stories, but it's like Patrice said; there's no telling how the finished product will be. Crom laughs at infidelity.

I am optimistic about this one. He is a decent actor that really has not had a great role. I am going to go out on a limb and say it will be better than GI Joe.

Lee@ You make fun of "Stargate Boy" but he is a much better actor than Arnold ever was when he played the part.

I am glad that a Howard expert is saying the same thing I have been saying for some time. Momoa is fine as far as looking the part of Conan as Howard depicted him.

I've been wanting this movie to be good since I
first heard they were doing it but I'm with this
Conan scholar (of which I also am one) and I come
to the same conclusion he has!

I won't delude myself of this movie's accurate
portrayal of CONAN (Emphasis on the first
syllable...at least they're getting that right!)!

I don't have much faith in this production but I want
to in the worst way! I'm not a negative person but
I don't see much hope here, unfortunately! Not much
hope at all!
DDD
DDD - 4/24/2010, 3:15 AM
My choice for this role is the best they could have
done in actors! But they totally missed even
looking at him! An idiot with only one eye can see
that he is perfect for the part! He is right there
in the actor pool and just waiting to play CONAN!
And the people casting this movie didn't even
consider him!

I mean insignificant unimportant ME saw this guy!
He is easier than sh!t to find! He has more charisma than
Schwarzanegger and is a fine British actor
who can do an impeccable American accent! Hoolyweerd
is just wasting this guy! It's enough to make me pull
my hair out (If I had any! lol)

Just watch him on NCIS where he played a Supersoldier
on supersteroids who was killing other soldiers with
his bare hands because he was out of his mind and
super-roid raging!

It was a scary and powerful performance! The NCIS
gang had to fight him like crazy people and finally a
whole bunch of soldiers and them wrestled him to the
ground! What an awesome and realistically violent scene!
He was throwing them all around and grunting like CONAN
would in battle! It was downright frightening!

This man has a scary physique and a powerful acting
ability and they just passed him by for scrawny
non-Celtic-Caucasian Hawaiian-boy just because he's tall!
Well, Conan looks like a bodybuilder not a scrawny tall
basketball star!

Conan has the kind of muscles that can grab a horse and
wrestle it to the ground which Howard described Conan doing
in one of his stories! Now does Momoa look like
he could wrestle a horse to the ground?

Well my guy looks like he could! And any casting director
can see that just like me! Unfortunately no
one on this production saw that cuz they are complete
Morons!

My guys name is PAUL TELFER! He's 6'2" and huge! The exact
same size as Arnold, except PAUL can actually act!
That's the end of my tirade! Here's PAUL:

CONAN-TELFER 3

CONAN-TELFER 1

CONAN-TELFER 4

CONAN-TELFER 2

Kellan Lutz looks more like CONAN than
scrawny Momoa! I liked Momoa on
Stargate Atlantis but he should have
never been in a CONAN movie as Conan!
NEVER!!!!

EPIC FAIL is the WORD (actually two-words-lol)!

It's a downright DAMM shame!!!!

johan08@ Where does he say he doubts Momoa's acting ability? He says he doesn't know anything about his acting ability.

DDD@ You're starting to sound like Lee and Evans getting the Cap role. Telfer would have been good for the part as well, but he didn't get it. Move on...what's done is done. ...and I have seen scrawny cowboys wrestle a horse to a ground, so I think Momoa would plenty capable of it. ;-)

I think DDD has a man-crush on Telfer. Just about every Conan article, DDD posts a comment with lots of half-naked pics of Telfer. I agree that he looks the part more than Mamoa, but the movie's already in production, so everybody just get over it.
I for one, actually prefer the comics over the original Howard stories. As such, I'd prefer it if the movie took more from the comics (characters, locations, creatures, and the look) than the Howard stories.
Also, I'm not sure why this guy emphazises the pronounciation of Conan. It's not like everyone's been pronouncing the name wrong. Even in the movies, Arnold pronounces it with the emphasis on the first syllable the way it's supposed to be....

Still i dont say anything before i see some footage!:(
I just hope that Thoth-Amon is in this movie! Gary Oldman for Thoth-Amon and Mickey Rourke should have been Corin (Conan´s Father)

i know that in original tales that there is no mention of young conan but i will definitely watch at least the first 15 minutes as i have seen leo howard the young star
i think he has talent with great potential and hope he doesn't get type cast
