Checking out the box office estimates for this weekend, Aug. 19-21 you can see that the 80's remakes Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night have terribly underperformed.

The Estimates, Aug. 19-21
1. The Help - $20.5 million
2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $16.3 million
3. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World - $12 million
4. Conan the Barbarian - $10 million
5. Fright Night - $8.3 million
- One Day - $5.5 million

UPDATE
Final Studio Figures, Aug. 19-21
1. The Help - $20 million
2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $16.1 million
3. Spy Kids: All the Time in the World - $11.6 million
4. Conan the Barbarian - $10 million
5. Fright Night - $7.7 million
- One Day - $5.1 million

If Conan keeps under performing, it looks like that script for the sequel Jason Momoa wrote will be collecting dust for quite some time. Conan the Barbarian has an estimated budget of $90 million while Fright Night is strategically positioned a lot better with a budget of only $30 million.

Check back Monday, when the numbers are finalized.

Fright Night was good. Won't be a classic like the original though.

The Help is #1 which got alot of attention, espically Emma Stone (I smell an Emmy nomination) That would build even more excitement to The Amazing Spider-Man if she won!!! XD

I knew this movie wasn't going to do well. Arnold owns the role, and his replacement is an unknown. Should had been made for the dvd release or Scifi.

CapFan79- Momoa does look like Conan.
I'd like an investigation in to why this movie is under performing so much. Editorial?

Saw Conan yesterday, it was ok nothing special...I couldve def waited for it on netflix. And Momoa did a decent job. It was an ok movie but not memorable.

@dmm5 - Considering the fact that Emmy's are only given out to TV shows, don't think Emma Stone or The Help will be getting one of those. I think you meant Oscar or Academy Award nomination. But probably not likely. It's too early for those. The big award winners cone at the end of the year. August is the month when all the studios drop their shittiest movies.

Damn, Conan flopped like hell. It's a shame, it was mostly filmed in my country and I wanted it to succeed.

@Capfan79 - Just having a star look more like a character isnt enough to make a movie successful. Maybe it's "underperforming" because it looked like crap and the general population doesn't give a damn about some buff dude in furry underwear swinging a sword around at dragons and such. The script, acting, special effects, and reviews are all BAD, BAD, BAD. There you go, investigation over.

I went to see Conan on Friday.......thoroughly enjoyed it. Okay plot was a bit weak and there were some weird stuff that no-one bothered to explain ( why would you drag a ship around with you ?) but Momoa was Conan......well Conan for anyone who was bothered to read Howard's novels. Howard described him as brooding, sullen and pantherlike.Arnie was brooding, mumbling and as supple as a barbell. Momoa's sword work was excellent.

This movie could've used some big stars to support Mamoa. It does look like a b-movie, wonder where all the money was spent?

Still, hope it's enjoyable and it does well on DVD/Blu.

I said before the 80's Conan with Arnie opened to a $9 million weekend and only grossed $39 million at the end of its run!

The sequel Conan the Destroyer opened even worse at $6 million and earned a pitiful $31 million at the end of its run.

This new Conan film opened to $10 million which for this genre isn't surprising. What it will do is out gross both the other 80's versions eventually when it's done but the real big guns have all had their say and people have basically spent their worth for the summer. Plus this genre has a very bad tradition at the box office when its not PG-13:

Conan the Barbarian - $39,565,475
Conan the Destroyer - $31,042,035
Red Sonja - $6,948,633
The Sword and the Sorcerer - $39,103,425
Excalibur - $34,967,437

Lord of the Rings is the only thing close to this genre to do well at the box office. Sword and Sorcery fans just aren't enough to support the genre at the movies and the general public don't go for this type of stuff.

I could be mistaken but were Conan and Green Lantern not available in 3D ONLY? I know they are where I live. That being the case, I think the poor box office is due at least partly to people resisting being force fed the 3D experience (and along with it, higher ticket prices). This makes me smile.

I wanted to see it but I didn't go because it's only showing in 3D and I'm no longer supporting that rip-off format.
