What Conan Could Have Looked Like on Screen

This makeup rendering shows us an older, gritter Conan that, unfortunately, will not make it into theaters when the film series relaunches next year...

Over the past several weeks, the first images of the new Conan (Jason Momoa) have been hitting the web; and it became apparent that the Barbarian's cinematic relaunch would have a very different look from the Arnold classics. Whether that is an improvement is yet to be seen. Though Momoa seemed to have put on some muscle for the role, this interpretation of the character vastly differs from the Frank Frazetta artwork which increased the property's popularity many years ago. It's fair to assume that the studio wishes to amp up the potential sex appeal of the character, instead of making him a battered and hardened warrior.

CHUD.com recently got their hands on a few images created by concept artists Mike Marino and Anil Gupta, which show a version of Conan ended up not being used for the feature film reboot:

"The make up was from Prosthetic Renaissance, and it was a pretty big set of appliances - forehead, nostrils, chin, bridge of the nose, wig, even cheeks. The design was, obviously, based on the late Frank Frazetta's vision for the character, and it's looks like a painting from the Frazetta archive come alive."

Below you can see a basic sculpt design, before hair and coloring effects were added; as well as the final product.

What do you think, ComicBookMovie fans? Is this the Conan that you would prefer to see in theaters next year?

He looks almost native american. But I do prefer the aged and war-weathered, as opposed to a neophyte which reflects Hollywood's obcession with youth-worship.

This would have made an awesome CGI movie like Beowulf only rated R or hell can I play this game please.

Screw Momoa's flick that shit will probably be PG-13 for all the kiddies. Pass. Hollywood's gone soft like the Philsbury Doughboy. I miss the good'ol days of violent movies.

Cool, but i actually prefer Momoa oddly enough. I love his fierce gaze, imposing presence and symmetric face. I don't need his face to show that he's been in a million battles which consisted of unsurmountable odds, i want him to look as if he's been in a million battles and was awesome enough to prevent his face to look like he went through those battles. In short, i like him to not only look like he won those battles but that he actually OWNED!!! And so far, from what i have seen, Momoa does that for me. I'm very pleased with his outcome and i can't wait to see this film.

Wow! That sculpture is an amazing match! Would all the prosthetics have looked good on film, though? I guess Marv worked. I think it is okay not to have him all scarred up this time since this is supposed to be an early adventure. Mamoa looks enough like Conan in the face. He should definitely become more weathered and scarred if there are squeals, though.

Arnold has totally let him self go, but that face on Sly's current build would be perfect for older Conan!

No shit Arnold has been pumping iron longer than most have been alive on this website. So if I was his age I'd give a rat's ass on how I'd look when I'm old too.
Except Stallone he ain't human.

Momoa looks as scary as a wet kitten to me. I've hung out with military dudes scarier than that metro.

So can Mamoa not act? I've never seen him in anything. If he can't act than we're screwed. But if he can pull of a Conan attitude, kind like... Titus Pulo in Rome sort of...than he could succeed even if people don't find his look satisfactory.

@Shaman

Well said, as always!

@MassExecutions

Going off of his Stargate: Atlantis performances, he's actually ok. He was never given much of an opportunity on that series to show range, but there was one episode called SATIVA that was about him BEFORE the conflict that destroyed his planet (long story) and I was actually quite impressed with him.

What he certainly does have, however, is LOADS of charisma (which is what sold the Ahhh-nold set of films) and EXCELLENT sword handling ability (which he demonstrated quite often on SGA), and a very FERAL fighting style and look.

I really think he is going to suprise a lot of detractors. People should certainly be more concerned with director Marcus Nispel imo!!!

I support MOma all the way. Love him in Stargate Atlantis, especially when him & Teal'c had it out. One of the best fight scenes in any series i've seen. The original artwork is great as well!

Actually, I don't care for that particular artist's rendition of Conan. I prefer the original Conan from Robert E. Howard and the black and white illustrations. Momoa matches up well with those and this movie is based on Howard's original stories.

MTV did an interview with Stephen Lang, who is playing the villain, earlier this week. Here is part of it:

"I think we're right in the spirit of Howard," Lang recently told MTV News during a phone call from Sofia, Bulgaria, where he's been staying during the shoot. "It's got the same kind of lurid quality. The purple prose of Robert E. Howard is really being translated to the screen."

"One of the things about his prose that's so distinct is that it takes itself very seriously," he explained. "There's nothing tongue-in-cheek about it at all. And there's nothing send-up about the world we're creating, though hopefully the movie is made with a lot of wit."

That's exactly the way Lang wants it. He says that their "Conan," in which Momoa takes over Schwarzenegger's role, will have less in common with the Governator's movies than with swashbuckling classics from the '50s and '60s. "I've never been a huge fan of the 'Conan' films," he explained. "To me, in spirit, the movie we're making is lot more like 'Jason and the Argonauts' or 'The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.' It's this huge adventure, these otherworldly things, these rip-snortners."

Ranger14 - Well, that sounds pretty good. It is true that there was NO camp in the Conan I've read.

Can you post some of the art your talking about or a link? Frazetta does make him look a little more rough and thuggish than some of the comics and novel covers I've seen.

@Matador - I think he is just pointing out how those movies tried to be big and take then selves seriously, despite the fantastic and crazy stuff in them. No winking at the camera in those films, I don't think.

Matador@ Reading out of context, are we? The key terms are "Huge Adventure". Howard's Conan was on a continuous adventure and Lang is simply saying it will have an adventure feel to it like those movies. He's not saying they are going to be filmed like or look like those movies.
