Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV series has finally added its first cast member, as Markella Kavenagh will make the trip to Middle Earth as a character named Tyra.

As far as we know (and there was an extensive Google search), J.R.R. Tolkien's sprawling series of fantasy novels don't feature anyone of that name, so this is either a brand new character or "Tyra" is a placeholder to obscure her real identity.

We still don't know a whole lot about this show, but it is expected to be a prequel of sorts to the original trilogy, set during The Second Age.

Kavenagh is an up-and-coming actress who has appeared in Amazon's Picnic at Hanging Rock, the Romper Stomper prequel series and The Cry.

I'll assume she's playing an elf for the time being

@BigMikeReviews - probably. There's a pretty distinct lack of female characters in Tolkien's stories (both because he admitted to not being good at writing them and because of the time) so its possible she's added in for that reason. Hopefully this will be to give the world a larger feeling and not for that "girl power men suck" reason that's been coming up way too often.

So is it in the same universe as the movies? It would be nice if they kept the same aesthetic.

I’m so excited for this series. Before the announcements of WandaVision and The Mandalorian it was my most anticipated TV show of all time but the excitement hasn’t subsided any, there’s just more awesome stuff coming.

Hard to get excited for a show that's only on a service I'll never have.

Oh so the story may be set during the 2nd age and not a straight up reboot of the film series. Very cool. I know next to nothing about that age, time to google and do some research yall

@Ace101 - The Second Age deals with the aftermath of the fall and banishment of Morgoth, the dark enemy of the world, and the return and rise of Sauron as the new power of darkness in Middle Earth. It also deals with the forging of the rings of power, Sauron’s war against Celebrimbor, the rise and fall of the Numenorian Empire and Sauron’s machinations to subjugate the minds and freedoms of all life outside of Valinor.

I certainly hope that is not the name of her character, because it just doesn't fit.
