We recently brought you news of a potential Lord of The Rings TV show, and it's now been confirmed that the series has landed a multi-season commitment at Amazon.

The show will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, and is expected to "dwarf any TV series to date."

Fans of Peter Jackson's epic movie trilogy should be happy to hear that Tolkien's LOTR novels won't be re-adapted here, as the series will focus on tales from Middle Earth that precede The Fellowship of the Ring. So yes, The Silmarillion is definitely a possibility.

Here's the press release in full:

“‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” said Sharon Tal Yguado, head of Scripted Series, Amazon Studios. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be takingThe Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for ‘The Lord of the Rings,'” added Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

You're right. Let's just leave it at that. No need for unnecessary bullshit.

If they can expand the lore in unique way then I’m all for it but if they do what they’re doing with Star Wars and just keep doing the same thing then no thanks

At first I thought they would be remaking the LOTR trilogy but I’m even more happy knowing it’s possibly going to be The Silmarillion!

@FleischerSupes - No way they could do melkor, they need a film like budget.

@MrBillCipher - I dig. How about Sauron with the Numenorians? He was in disguise as a human (more or less) at that time.

@FleischerSupes - That's my guess. Maybe they'll go Númenorians after The Fall, would reference lots of stuff shown in the trilogy (palantír, wizards, sauron, army of the dead, isildur, mouth of sauron and so on).

GOOD! I said the only way I'd really be open to this was if it adapted other works like the Silmarillion rather than LOTR again so I'm glad this seems to be the case, hope it looks similar enough to Jackson's that it could be considered related if the viewer wants, but also unrelated by those who'd rather it be separate.

Colour me intrigued.

They should chronicle Sauron's descent into darkness, that in itself could take up a few seasons

I wonder how they'd pull off Ungoliant.

@GhostSurfer - I’d love to see the scene of multiple balrogs charging in to stop her from devouring their master

@GhostSurfer - I'd love to see Ainulindalë but they're probably keeping it more grounded. I doubt we'll see stories of the Valar as a central theme.

So is this in the same universe as the films? Or is this a new adaptation of the world?

"Dwarf any TV series to date." - nice job immediately making us all compare your show to Game of Thrones. You just set the bar really high for yourself.
