THE LORD OF THE RINGS Director Peter Jackson Reveals Why He Considered Hypnosis To Forget Making The Movies

The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has revealed that he came close to attempting to forget making those movies through hypnosis, going so far as to enlist Derren Brown. Why? Find out here...

Filmmaker Peter Jackson recently revealed that he was ghosted by The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's producers after being asked to consult on the small screen adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's work. However, like the rest of us, it sounds like the director would rather experience the Prime Video series as a fan.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com), the director reflected on the time he spent in Middle-earth and revealed that he spoke to Derren Brown about using hypnosis to make him forget the work he did on those Oscar-winning movies. Why? Well, not because he hated the experience; instead, he wanted to watch them with fresh eyes.

"When we did the Lord of the Rings movies, I always felt I was the unlucky person who never got to see [them] as a coming-out-of-the-blue film," Jackson explained. "By the time they were screening, I was immersed in it for five or six years. It was such a loss for me not be able to see them like everyone else."

"I actually did seriously consider going to some hypnotherapy guy to hypnotize me to make me forget about the films and the work I had done over the last six or seven years so I could sit and enjoy them," he added. "I didn’t follow through with it, but I did talk to [British mentalist] Derren Brown about that and he thought he could do it."

Of course, being ghosted by The Rings of Power team means Jackson can now enjoy the show along with the rest of us, and we'd say it's a good thing that he didn't forget all the incredible work he did on the movies.

Jackson's own fans remain optimistic that he might return to the fantasy realm at some point, though that doesn't currently look to be on the cards for him. We don't know what he has planned next, but it would be no bad thing for him to tackle something in the Marvel or DC Universes down the line, especially if he brings his epic vision to those worlds (Fantastic Four, perhaps?).

Which movie would you guys like to forget in order to experience it all over again?

I imagine he would sooner want to forget The Hobbit, given the toll that production took.

@Waddles - Hey I've gotta be real for a second. I've been going through a really hard time. My dad passed away about 2 weeks ago and it's been hard adjusting. I really appreciate people like you here willing to have a laugh. Thanks.

Had he done that then it'd be weird for him to still have the numbers of pretty much all those that worked in the trilogy (cast and crew) and people on the streets would know who he is. Plus all the awards he must have on his house or memorabilia that can only come from one place.

Funny anecdote still.

He should direct one day a possible Inhumans movie to flesh out all of the city of Attilan.

Earlier this year I rewatched the LOTR trilogy extended edition, but this time on acid. And my god... What a blast that was! The battle against the Oliphaunts was absolutely insane. I never realized how utterly chaotic that sequence was until I was tripping balls. My brain could barely hold on. I would 100% recommend this to everyone.

Nah man, all he has to do is not focus on anything related to that world for a decade or two. Then you go back and check out your old work and it's a trip. As an artist and musician, I can vouch for the experience or rediscovering your old work again. It's familiar but you get to experience it from a different perspective, from the outside looking back in to a time you graduated from, with nostalgic yet judgmental reverence for what you accomplished then.
