THE LORD OF THE RINGS Expected To Become A STAR WARS-Style Franchise Under Warner Bros.' Watch

New The Lord of the Rings movies are on the way, and a new report reveals Warner Bros. may be looking at Star Wars for inspiration. How does The Rings of Power streamer, Prime Video, feel about it, though?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power remains the most expensive TV series ever made, and Amazon Prime Video now finds itself with some unexpected competition in the form of Warner Bros. A few days ago, the studio announced plans to expand the franchise in theaters, suggesting we'll soon see two conflicting visions for Middle-earth on our screens.

Warner Bros. is a minority stakeholder in the franchise but is still free to do what it likes. Desperate to recapture past success, the Discovery-owned studio is banking on yet another familiar IP, and The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) reveals that, "Though there are no scripts yet, one insider suggests to [us] that Warner Bros. hopes to turn LOTR into a Star Wars-like franchise."

That might mean many things, but as we've previously heard about plans to give key characters their own spin-off movies, it's not hard to figure out where The Lord of the Rings may be heading.

It sounds like Warner Bros. is keen to enlist filmmaker Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens to be part of this vision, something that would give them an advantage over Amazon, a studio that froze them out of The Rings of Power

Warner Bros. had found itself embroiled in a legal battle with the Saul Zaentz Company-owned Middle-earth Enterprises about whether they were doing enough with the property, with plans for an animated movie - The War of the Rohirrim - deemed insufficient. New owners, Embracer, have settled matters as they look to take advantage of the franchise's popularity.

While Amazon plans to remain in the Second-Age, Warner Bros. is looking to figure out how to tell more stories in the Third-Age. One insider views that as "a sign of desperation, they want to make it seem like they are the studio of old. The Hobbit didn’t leave people wanting more."

There are even concerns that Amazon may scrap plans to fulfil its five-season plan for The Rings of Power after the lukewarm reception to the series, leaving the franchise's television future in doubt.

Talking to Variety (also via SFFGazette.com), however, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke seemed unconcerned about whether there's a risk of oversaturating the market with Middle-earth content. "We’ll see," she says, "We love our original series. We’re extremely proud of it, and invested long term. So, we definitely think there’s enough fan love to sustain ours for a long time."

What are your hopes for The Lord of the Rings moving forward?

So we take one of the most important works of literature in the past 100+ years and Peter Jackson turns it into one of the greatest and most important cinematic achievements in movie history.....

And they inclusion with no quality poop out a horrible most expensive ever TV show & now want to make things even worse.

Frack them, & I hope they drown in their sad red ink.

Oh man this is not going to end well.

Seriously when it comes to adaptions of beloved literature, people are not going to care once you have run out of material because what they make up is usually shit compared to what came before

Seriously fantastic beasts had the author and was still crap after the first

Look at tv adaptions of book series, if the series is still going and the books catch up before the books are done it always goes to shit

What about The Ten Commandments? Could be more Moses movies with more commandments! An Ark Of The Covenant series with the Ark being opened and it gives people superpowers.

Could be some cool Jesus sequels too. Just imagine Jesus returns and someone like Omni Man is waiting for him.

Sounds great to me. It only goes one of two ways. Either they are good/great and I get to see a bunch of good/great movies. Or they suck and I don’t have to watch them ever again. The books that are already great remain great no matter what else is made. The movies that are great will remain great no matter what else comes out.

Just let the projects flop. They'll learn. Look at what happened to Fantastic Beasts. Now WB is on damage control trying to save the Harry Potter franchise.

@SonOfAGif - heard of the theory Lana watchowski only accepted Matrix 4 to make it as shitty as possible and killing the possibility of others messing with the franchise she created w her sibling? PJ could do it too, what's his carreer when compared to LoTR?

Lol.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/2/2023, 4:00 AM
@SonOfAGif - Fantastic Beasts failed I think because they wanted to make it a different franchise (the Dumbledore chronicles) than it was (Newt and fantastic beasts).

The Wizarding World is a rich lore, and as Hogwarts Legacy shows, it can be entertaining if they know what to focus on.
Fogs
Fogs - 3/2/2023, 3:44 AM
There is no possible way this will end up well.

The only chance of something relevant would be for them doing stuff from the 1st or 2nd ages.

Pretty sure they're remaking LoTR or creating a parallel story with a "War in the North" theme.

And it will be shit.
