THE LORD OF THE RINGS Franchise Has A New Owner And We May Be Getting A Series Of Spinoff Movies

Embracer Group has acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings franchise, and it sounds like they're plotting spinoff movies revolving around characters like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Gollum. Check it out!

With less than a month to go until The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives on Prime Video, Embracer Group has announced that they've acquired Middle-earth Enterprises.

The company now owns the worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks, and stage productions relating to the iconic fantasy literary works The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

What does this mean for the franchise's future?

Right now, it's hard to say, but a press release may shed some light on the company's future plans. As well as having a financial interest in The Rings of Power, it's said "Other opportunities include exploring additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien."

It's been a long time since The Lord of the Rings movies graced theaters, but when they did, the trilogy earned widespread critical acclaim, Oscar wins, and a whole heap of money at the box office. Spinoff movies revolving around those characters could be very good or very bad, but there's definitely going to be an interest from fans in the possibility of spending more time with those fan-favourites.

Embracer Group also nabbed the rights for other Middle-earth-related literary works authorized by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins, which have yet to be explored.

"I am truly excited to have The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, one of the world’s most epic fantasy franchises join the Embracer family, opening up more transmedia opportunities including synergies across our global group," says Lars Wingefors, Founder and Group CEO Embracer Group.

"I am thrilled to see what lies in the future for this IP with Freemode and Asmodee as a start within the group. Going forward, we also look forward to collaborating with both existing and new external licensees of our increasingly stronger IP portfolio."

It could be an exciting few years for The Lord of the Rings franchise, and it's clear the plan is to expand the series on the big screen. Which characters will be put under the spotlight remains to be seen, but we're sure the names above were probably put out there to see how fans respond.

You know what I want? I want to be able to watch these movies in HD on my computer. [frick] you google.

@kazuma - I'm gonna make you jealous and tell you my local cinema is doing showings of all three this month. Only saw the first, but I really do wish all LotR fans get that opportunity once

@kazuma - Wait what? What platform are you using?

@bkmeijer1 - went and saw the extended cut of two towers in theaters once and it was amazing but also probably the longest I’ve ever sat in a movie theater chair

@The72nd - I'd gladly watch all 3 extended editions (not at once) if they were released at an Imax near home.

The LotR trilogy had the films I watched most in the theater, at least 3 times each 😁

@The72nd - yeah, its the extended editions over here as well. Luckily the seats and legspace are quite comfortable and it has a (much needed) break in the middle of the movie

These characters should be in the public domain.

@Saintsinnister - Public Domain is how you get 2 snow white movies in a year.

@Saintsinnister - think Ring des Nibelungen is, amd that is very close to Lord of the Rings. Kinda surprised nobody is making a big budget movie or show based on that yet

@kazuma - Don't forget the 2 Pinocchio movies we have coming, both of which look to be very good in their own way, but the GA is going to be like "Whaaa?" (at least my 6 year will be and I generally assume that she represents the GA).

@StSteven - We also had 2 Jungle book movies too.

@Saintsinnister - The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings don't enter the public domain in the US and UK until 2044. Then they will become just like Robin Hood, King Arthur, and most of the Sherlock Holmes stories. So, we'll have to wait another 22 years to finally get that Enola Baggins TV movie.

@kazuma - I really don't see the problem with that. It let's the market decide what they want rather than giving power to whoever paid for the rights. Only issue I can think of is in terms of the creator of the original, but that's why copyright laws have an expiration date. It takes into account the life of the creator before allowing it to enter public domain.

@kazuma - Has cinematic universe and comic book films seriously rotted people’s brains enough to make arguments against public domain? Christ.

@kazuma - Did we? Yeah, I guess that now that I think about it you’re right, with the first being the Disney one with Jon Favreu (the one that won all the awards), and the other one that was directed by Serkis, which, um, didn’t.) I’m not throwing shade against my man Andy, I legitimately just forgot.

@Saintsinnister @DavidMullich - The Hobbit was published in 1937 so if they're going for the 95 year rule its copyright lasts through 2032. Fellowship was in 1954, so it goes into public on Jan 1st 2050.

This is a mistake. They will never, ever, ever capture that magic, and wonder that they did with the original trilogy. Truly lightening in a bottle stuff.

As a longtime fan of Tolkien's works and Jackson's movies I say... NAY!!

Middle-earth has no spinoffs. Middle-earth needs no spinoffs. We don't need them!

@IcePyke - I like all 6 movies, the LOTR trilogy most, tied, the next 2 tied, the 3rd one last. Most liked to least liked… But I like em all.
